There’s a pause before Billy Joel steps onstage each night when he makes the subtle transition from low-key Everyman to world-renowned Piano Man. It’s just a few minutes of “not talking to anybody, not seeing anybody,” he said, mimicking waving off potential distractions. In February, “Turn the Lights Back On,” his first new song in nearly 20 years, joined the set list. Joel, 75, promised to keep the show running as long as there was demand. In total, the run grossed more than $260 million with attendance nearing two million, according to the trade publication Pollstar.

It’s been nearly 51 years since Billy Joel recorded the song “Piano Man” — five decades of performing and merchandise for all occasions. As Mr. Joel, 75, will perform his 150th show at Madison Square Garden, the final performance of his 10-year-residency, fans have been gearing up. Five decades of performing means a lot of T-shirts sold — more than 10 million, in the estimation of Claire Mercuri, a spokeswoman for Mr. Joel — and that’s just the count for licensed wear. The musician doesn’t have a favorite item — they’re all his “children,” Mr. Joel said, through Ms. Mercuri, which he also says when asked to pick his favorite song. Collectors, devoted to every wave of memorabilia style, from the blocky graphics of the 1990s to the minimal modern versions, are at the ready.

The lighting of the Olympic cauldron is a spectacle steeped in both tradition and secrecy. With just one day until the opening ceremony, the identity of the individual who will light the cauldron remains unknown. Lori Umbrino saw her first Billy Joel concert at Shea Stadium in Queens in 1990. More than three decades later, she stood with her two children outside Madison Square Garden on Thursday evening, each wearing a T-shirt from the singer’s concerts across the years. That journey has led them back to Madison Square Garden, where Mr. Joel was performing the 150th and final show of his 10-year residency there. The milestone — and, for some, the devastating misunderstanding that Mr. Joel was retiring — drew veterans of his shows, first-timers, families and singles from around the city and the country. Mortgage interest rates eased very slightly last week, but not enough to get today's potential homebuyers off the fence. Homebuyers are also likely waiting for interest rates to drop further. While mortgage rates don't follow the Fed exactly (they follow loosely the yield on the 10-year Treasury), rates will come down if investors believe inflation is easing. "We'd probably want to see mortgage rates come down 100 basis points, so I think if we had a five handle, even in the high fives, I think the market could see more momentum." Rates today are very slightly lower than they were last year at this time.

Following Saturday’s last-gasp victory against South Sudan, the USA were forced to once again fight deep into the game – this time against a determined Germany team. Joel Embiid Believes He Could Have Been the GOAT

If all goes according to plan, the star-laden American men’s basketball team will romp to a gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games next month. Which means that for one of the team’s linchpins, the Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid, the most complicated challenge may have been choosing to play for the United States in the first place. Embiid, who is 30, is a native of Cameroon who also holds French and American citizenship. France aggressively courted Embiid, and his decision to instead join the U.S. team led to withering criticism from the French basketball community. (Cameroon’s team did not qualify for this year’s Games.)
