The number of reported murders in New York City last year dropped roughly 11% from 2021, authorities said, but the nation’s largest city still recorded an overall increase in major crimes as it grapples with a surge that started during the Covid-19 pandemic.
There were 126,537 major crimes committed in the five boroughs last year—an increase of 22.4% over 2021, according to the New York Police Department.
The total includes felony assault, robbery, burglary, car theft and grand larceny.
The number of murders, however, edged down in 2022 to 433 from 488—the lowest level since 2019.
