Editor’s Note: Gabriel Levin is a sophomore at Cornell University and a columnist for The Cornell Daily Sun. CNN —An arrest has been made after evil posts online called for the eradication of Jews at Cornell, the university I attend. Even though the suspect, a fellow student, is in federal custody, the constant threat of anti-Semitism looms over us still. I applied to Cornell University, where I’m now in my sophomore year, in part to get away from all that. My classmate who allegedly made those heinous threats against Jews wanted us to cower in fear, or worse, return hate for hate.

In recent days, searches and mentions involving the phrase “anti-Jew” skyrocketed on the Chinese app WeChat . On news stories about the Middle East turmoil, some comments have ranged from outright threats against Jews to negativity directed at anyone defending Israeli actions in the conflict. Influencers on Chinese social media who identify as Jewish have found themselves trolled by online mobs.

New York CNN —Hedge fund billionaire Leon Cooperman is blasting college students for protesting against Israel, joining a growing list of powerful university donors to speak out on the issue. “These kids in college have sh*t for brains,” Cooperman told CNN in a phone interview. Earlier this month, a Columbia University student who was hanging up posters in support of Israel was assaulted. Samantha Slater, a Columbia University spokesperson, declined to comment on whether the university plans to take disciplinary action against Massad. “Columbia is grateful to Mr. Cooperman for his years of generosity and service to Columbia Business School,” Slater said in a statement to CNN.

Opinion | Why Jews Cannot Stop Shaking Right Now
  + stars: | 2023-10-22 | by ( Dara Horn | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +6 min
There is a reason so many Jews cannot stop shaking right now. The concept of intergenerational trauma doesn’t begin to describe the dark place into which this month’s attack plunged Jewish communities around the world. Many American Jews, like Jews around the world, are descendants of those who survived. As was true in ancient times, the ties between global Jewish communities and Israel are concrete, specific, intimate and personal. Millions of American Jews, not to mention Jews in Britain, France, Australia and elsewhere, have friends and relatives in Israel.

She and her friends spent four hours running through the desert before they were rescued. The festival security, at this point, had turned off the music and asked everybody to go straight to their vehicles. After getting to our car, the festival security asked everybody to drive down in one direction on the dirt road. We started driving and the festival security started asking everyone to turn around and go in another direction. As soon as we heard the gunshots we just opened our doors and started running for our lives.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. He didn’t live to see the allies’ victory in World War II that year or the conference in San Francisco that month that established the United Nations. But his diplomatic efforts to meet with Arab leaders came undone after a devastating explosion at a hospital in Gaza. Biden himself initially supported the US 2003 war in Iraq only to end up as the president who ordered the US pullout of Afghanistan. “This is the politics that Donald Trump’s rhetoric has wrought among his supporters in the Republican Party,” wrote Avlon.

[1/3] In half a century of public life, U.S. President Joe Biden has demonstrated unwavering support for Israel. Biden, who is of Irish Catholic descent, has used similar words in the past to profess his affinity for Israel. U.S. and regional sources have expressed doubt that Israel, which vows to destroy Hamas, has yet crafted an endgame. As vice president, Biden often mediated the testy relationship between Obama and Netanyahu. "Whenever things were getting out of hand with Israel, Biden was the bridge," said Ross, now at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

But a different dynamic seemed to be emerging against the backdrop of vastly different expectations. He imagined an entirely different and urgent reaction, he said, if the child in the picture had been African American. The campus protests of the late 1960s sought in part to dismantle the in loco parentis role that colleges and universities had held in American life. Ten years ago, when the former New York City police commissioner, Ray Kelly, was invited to speak at Brown University, students objected. The current campus protests reflect the limits of the more bonded relationship that students and universities have forged.

Ron BoyerEugene, Ore.To the Editor:As an American Jew, I am horrified by President Biden’s response to Hamas’s horrific murder of Israelis on Oct. 7. By providing military aid to Israel, the U.S. government is fueling the Israeli government’s vastly disproportionate response, in which it has already killed more Palestinian civilians than Israeli civilians were killed by Hamas. To the Editor:As an American Israeli living in Israel with a son in the Israel Defense Forces, I feel that I must speak out. It is clear to Israelis that in carrying out these atrocities, Hamas was seeking to draw Israel into precisely the actions that Israel is now engaged in. The justification for those actions could be debated endlessly, but the world must know that Israel considers itself in existential peril.

Yonatan Manor, president of Boston University Students for Israel, said failure to denounce Hamas was akin to supporting Nazis. Younger Americans are much less likely than older generations to support Israel. Support for Israel has grown among all Americans since 2014, when clashes between Israel and Hamas led to thousands of deaths, the vast majority Palestinians. One member, a Middle Eastern Jewish student at Barnard College who requested anonymity for safety concerns, said the organization's ethos underscores the conflict's complexity. Raffi Ivker, a Jewish student at George Washington University, said he believed neither side "has clean hands."

CNN —It’s a story President Joe Biden has told repeatedly in recent days, and it’s meant to demonstrate his long history supporting Israel. Biden frequently recounts his meeting with Golda Meir, the trailblazing first and only woman to serve as Israel’s prime minister. He has conflated these two events – the Yom Kippur War of 1973 and the Six-Day War of 1967 – before, as CNN’s fact-check team reported in 2021. Coincidentally, there’s a new movie version of Meir’s story, “Golda,” starring Helen Mirren and focused on the 1973 Yom Kippur war. During the October 1973 Yom Kippur War, Egypt and Syria attacked Israel on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar with the aim of reclaiming land.

The donor backlash has been driven by a Palestinian literary festival that was held on campus last month, before the Hamas terror attacks on Israel. UPenn leaders acknowledged well before the start of the Palestine Writes Literature Festival that the event would feature speakers with a history of making antisemitic remarks. “Jews have played an extraordinary role in the history and legacy of the University of Pennsylvania. Billionaire Ronald Lauder, another powerful financial backer of school, is threatening to do the same if more isn’t done to fight antisemitism. At the hands of Hamas, the Jewish people have endured horrors not seen since the Holocaust. My father hated that Hamas had dominated the conversation and positioned itself as the face of Gaza worldwide. Like many people from Gaza, my father knew that if you spoke up against these tyrannical oppressors, you were swiftly dealt with. Among the hard right, many people are conflating Palestinians with Hamas to justify the flattening of Gaza. The truth is, Hamas is not Gaza, and Gaza is not Hamas.

JERUSALEM, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Volunteers helped gravediggers at Israel's main military cemetery on Wednesday as burials began for soldiers slain in the assault on Israel by Hamas gunmen from the Gaza Strip. Using shovels and a mechanical digger, they scooped out earth to prepare plots for the soldiers' final resting place at Mount Herzl National Cemetery. Ori Kirzon, a 29-year-old ultra-Orthodox Jew, said he came to Mount Herzl at 6:30 a.m. with other volunteers to lend a hand. It is sometimes likened to the U.S. Arlington National Cemetery. At a tree-lined section of Mount Herzl, dozens of silent mourners watched a funeral unfold.

From the outset of this weekend's Israel-Hamas conflict, graphic footage of abductions and military operations have spread like wildfire on social media platforms, including X, formerly known as Twitter.
