Two summers ago, I spent 13 hours on a plane flying from Los Angeles to Auckland, New Zealand. Go to newsletter preferences Thanks for signing up! AdvertisementNew Zealand is known for its incredibly stunning scenery — and an incredibly long flight if you live in the US like me. I boarded a flight in Denver heading to Los Angeles and arrived at my final destination — Auckland, New Zealand — two days later. Between time-zone changes, a 13-hour flight, a 2.5-hour flight, and layovers, I spent nearly 24 consecutive hours in airports, airport lounges, and airplanes.

But his children will become philanthropic titans by wielding taxpayer-subsidized private power through enormous charitable foundations upon his death. A progressive annual wealth tax, with rates becoming steeper as wealth goes above $1 billion. A cap on the charitable deduction so that wealthy people, like Buffett, don't get to opt out entirely of paying taxes.

This photograph taken on April 6, 2022, shows a general view of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) plant in Dadri. The mounds of jet-black coal shimmering under the afternoon sun at the Dadri power plant are a raw illustration of India's coal dependence -- a habit that despite increasing pressure, the country is finding hard to kick. India's NTPC Green Energy filed draft papers for a 100 billion rupees ($1.19 billion) initial public offering on Wednesday, as it looks to cash in on the country's renewables expansion plans and a red-hot equities market. The company, a unit of state-owned power producer NTPC , will only issue new shares, and existing shareholders will not sell any stake, the draft papers showed. So far this year, about 235 companies have gone public and raised more than $8.6 billion, which exceeds the total amount raised last year.

Read previewA top US Air Force general said that Ukraine is not using its F-16s for the most dangerous missions because the pilots flying them are still new to the fighter jet. Given the vulnerabilities of more offensive missions, it was thought that Kyiv would use the fighter jets in an air-defense role. Before Ukraine received its long-sought-after F-16s from NATO, one of the big questions surrounding the much-hyped transfer of the fighter aircraft was how Kyiv would actually go on to use them in combat. AdvertisementThe Ukrainian F-16s flew their first combat mission in late August as they helped defend the country against a massive Russian aerial bombardment. It's still unclear what caused the crash, but Ukraine dismissed the commander of its air force and said it would investigate the incident.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe aviation industry still sees so-called "sustainable aviation fuel" (SAF) as the only viable way to meet its decarbonization targets, even as opposition and the potential for higher costs for passengers pose obstacles to the fast-growing sector. SAF is a broad term describing fuel that is burned by an aircraft engine, but instead of using kerosene is derived from more sustainable sources. The planemaker said it is collaborating with producer HIF Global on the development of methane-based fuels, and investing in alcohol-to-jet fuel producer LanzaJet. But IATA's own forecast for SAF production to triple in 2024 to 1.9 billion liters would cover just 0.53% of aviation fuel demand for the year. "The truth is, it's going to be more expensive, you can't really sugarcoat that," said HIF Global's Clara Bowman.

CNN —Engineers at NASA have successfully fired up a set of thrusters Voyager 1 hasn’t used in decades to solve an issue that could keep the 47-year-old spacecraft from communicating with Earth from billions of miles away. Currently the farthest spacecraft from Earth, Voyager 1 is about 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) away. Earlier this year, engineers spotted an issue when the fuel tube inside one of Voyager’s thrusters became clogged. Engineers switched again to the trajectory correction thruster set in 2018 when the second set also appeared clogged. Once the spacecraft has exhausted this thruster set, Voyager 1’s remaining option is the other already clogged set of attitude propulsion thrusters.

How long the strike lasts will determine how serious the problems are for Boeing. Boeing has a long way back to profitability, no matter how long the strike lasts. So as bad as the strike might be for Boeing, it has plenty of other problems to deal with. So even with financial problems that might kill another company, Boeing isn’t going anywhere. The strike could last a whileNegotiations between Boeing, the union and federal mediators are expected to resume early this week.

If you're looking to build wealth, traditional forms of investment aren't going to get you there — at least according to young, rich people. For younger wealthy investors, though, stocks come in behind seven other types of investments, including real estate, cryptocurrency, private equity and direct investment into companies. Klontz says that younger wealthy investors may be falling victim to some of the same cognitive biases that regular investors do — and it may be holding them back from maximizing their returns. Young people have ignored traditional advice 'for thousands of years'In general, it's not surprising that younger investors, regardless of wealth level, want to chart a different path than older generations. The rumor mill about immigrants attacking household pets got its start in thinly sourced anecdotes shared at government meetings and on social media. Some of the images shared by social media users were openly prejudiced, showing Black people chasing after cats. These images and videos often create a more engaging and shareable post — regardless of whether they’re based in truth. There were cats holding military-style rifles to defend themselves, cats holding up political signs, cats and ducks sitting side-by-side, AI-generated humans holding cat-related signs and cats and ducks being cuddled by Trump. Ryanair Group CEO Michael O'Leary said on Saturday a prolonged Boeing workers' strike may cut the number of aircraft it receives by next summer to 20 from an anticipated 25. But now, with this week's Boeing's workers' strike further threatening the airplane maker's turnaround, O'Leary said Ryanair might only receive 20 planes if the strike continues for three to four weeks. "I have no doubt that Boeing will fix this strike," O'Leary told Ireland's Newstalk Radio. Workers have been protesting all week in Boeing factories in the Seattle area that assemble Boeing's MAX, 777 and 767 jets. Boeing and union negotiators will return to the bargaining table early next week as the two sides try to end a strike.

An Alaska Airlines plane was forced to abort takeoff at Nashville International Airport in Tennessee after a Southwest Airlines flight was cleared to cross from the same runway, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Alaska Airlines Flight 369 was headed to Seattle on Thursday morning and had received clearance to take off from air traffic control, the airline said in a statement, when Southwest Airlines Flight 2029 was cleared to cross the end of the same runway, the FAA said. The Alaska pilots had to brake so hard and fast that the tires on their plane blew out, the airline said. New York CNN —Lawyers for Sam Bankman-Fried, the convicted former CEO of crypto exchange FTX, filed an appeal Friday, claiming he was denied a fair trial last fall and seeking new proceedings under a different judge. Bankman-Fried, 32, was sentenced to 25 years in prison after a jury convicted him on multiple federal counts of fraud and conspiracy in November. Two years after FTX collapsed in the midst of a cash crunch, Bankman-Fried is arguing that he didn’t get a fair shake in his trial. The court, they say, prohibited Bankman-Fried from introducing evidence of solvency for FTX and its sister firm, Alameda. Ellison pleaded guilty in cooperation with the government and became a star witness against Bankman-Fried during his trial.

It also increased job security for union members, because Boeing promised to build its next commercial jet, which has yet to be announced, at a unionized plant. But 95% of members of the IAM union voted against the deal. In a separate vote 96% voted to authorize a strike, easily clearing the two-thirds threshold needed to approve a walkout.
