And at a criminal trial, causing a ruckus can bring its own consequences. In a criminal trial, Trump, along with his eager-to-please lawyers, must attend every day. he quipped in response to an argument from one of Trump's lawyers. Technically, Trump faces a maximum of four years in prison for each count he's charged with in his criminal case. The criminal trial will give Trump a chance to hold multiple campaign-boosting rallies before the hallway cameras each day.

Trump personally owes over $454 million stemming from the ruling made by Judge Arthur Engoron back in February. Here’s what happens if Trump can’t secure the bond:Seizing bank accounts and cashIn theory, officials can begin the complicated legal process of taking his assets, barring any other strategic legal maneuvering from state prosecutors and countering from Trump’s legal team. “They walk in and give it to the manager,” said Adam Pollock, a former assistant New York State Attorney General who now specializes in judgment enforcement at Pollock Cohen LLP. “The attorney general’s office is the largest firm in New York State, if you think about it as a law firm. That is really the end of the day, I think, for the Trump organization in New York,” Litman said.

But exemplifying the roller-coaster nature of his public career, Trump is also soon poised for a massive financial windfall. The case, related to payment to an adult film star ahead of the 2016 election, could lead to Trump being a convicted felon by November’s election. His legal team said last week the bond amount was a “practical impossibility” for Trump, whose wealth is tied up in skyscrapers and golf resorts. Trump’s legal team has also said he shouldn’t be required to sell assets to meet the deadline since doing so would create a fire sale devastating to his business. The White House has done its best not to comment on the case, to avoid giving Trump more political ammunition.

Yet even if the higher-end estimate is accurate, as Trump’s lawyers have made clear in sober, detailed filings, it wouldn’t be enough. And at least some of the money Trump does have is tied up in loan agreements that include terms requiring him to have tens of millions of dollars in cash on hand. One insurer, Chubb, underwrote a $91.63 million bond just two weeks ago in another Trump legal loss – E. Jean Carroll’s defamation case. In the past week, the insurer informed Trump’s team it could not accept property as collateral. In total, 30 insurers contacted by Trump’s team declined to pursue the effort to secure a bond.

The newly merged company that's set to go public, Trump Media, will be listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange with the letters DJT, Trump's initials. In the initial public offering, the company raised $140 million, selling 10 million shares at $14 each. He also used company cash to buy Trump-branded merchandise, including $1.2 million on Trump Ice bottled water, the report said. Under the merged company, Trump would have nearly 80 million shares, worth around $3 billion. It's unclear when exactly Trump would be able to cash in on the upcoming listing for his social media company.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump is starting to struggle under the weight of multiple legal cases against him. His leadership political action committee, Save America, spent nearly $5.6 million in legal fees in February alone. And while the super PAC Maga Inc. has refunded nearly all of that money, that’s money that could have been used for Trump’s campaign. According to recent Federal Election Commission filings, the president had $71 million in available cash in his principal campaign account at the end of February, compared to Trump’s campaign, which reported $33.5 million. It’s likely that big-ticket supporters would rather back a campaign for the next president than fund a collective bailout.

The calendar is not Donald J. Trump’s friend. In six days, the former president must secure an appeal bond for roughly half a billion dollars in his civil fraud case in New York, a possibility that was called into question on Monday. In a court filing, Mr. Trump’s lawyers revealed that he had been unable to secure an appeal bond despite “diligent efforts” that included approaching about 30 bond companies. If he cannot produce the bond by March 25, Mr. Trump faces the possibility of financial disaster and humiliation. New York’s attorney general, who brought the fraud case, would be entitled to collect the $454 million and could seek to seize Mr. Trump’s New York properties or freeze his bank accounts.

New York CNN —Former President Donald Trump doesn’t have the cash he needs to stop the state of New York from potentially seizing his assets. In a court filing Monday, Trump’s lawyers laid out the stark economic reality facing the leading Republican candidate for president. Trump’s lawyers, for their part, say the ruling is unprecedented and underwriters don’t write checks that big — even to billionaires. What could happen to Trump’s properties? James has made it clear she won’t hesitate to go after Trump’s properties if he doesn’t come up with the cash.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump arrives for the start of his civil fraud trial at New York State Supreme Court on October 02, 2023 in New York City. Chubb was one of more than 30 companies that refused to craft a bond that would put the massive business fraud judgment on pause, attorneys for Trump said in a New York appeals court filing Monday. Appeal bonds aim to prevent the loser of a court judgment from using the appeals process to delay or avoid paying their penalties. But "within the past week," he said, Chubb reversed course and "notified Defendants that it could not accept real property as collateral." "Though disappointing, this decision was not surprising given that Chubb was the only surety willing to even consider accepting real estate as collateral," Garten said.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump filed yet another lawsuit against the news media late Monday, accusing ABC News and George Stephanopoulos of defamation over assertions the anchor made in a combative interview. Stephanopoulos asserted multiple times in the interview with Mace that Trump had “raped” Carroll. “You endorsed Donald Trump for president. How do you square your endorsement of Donald Trump with the testimony that we just saw?” Stephanopoulos asked Mace. Dismissing a countersuit months later, however, the judge in the case concluded that the claim Trump raped Carroll was “substantially true.”“Indeed, the jury’s verdict in Carroll II establishes, as against Mr Trump, the fact that Mr Trump ‘raped her’, albeit digitally rather than with his penis.

Multiple insurance firms have balked at Trump’s attempt to finance the bond based on the value of his real estate assets. As always with Trump, there is a legal front and a political one. His claims are inaccurate but appear to be politically effective among his supporters who revile political and legal elites in Washington. Therefore, there are good reasons why James – a Democrat – may seek other legal remedies to secure the judgment. Although his case is historic, Navarro is far from the only ex-Trump associate to serve time in jail.

Ten days ago, Chubb underwrote Trump's $92 million bond for his E. Jean Carroll defamation appeal. But Chubb declined to handle the far higher appeal bond Trump now needs in his NY civil fraud case. The insurance giant had faced blowback after agreeing to the Carroll bond. Chubb's "no, thanks" comes just five days after the company's CEO, Evan Greenberg, sent a letter to brokers, clients, and investors addressing widespread criticism over the Carroll bond. The Carroll bond was underwritten by Chubb subsidiary Federal Insurance Company.

Donald Trump cannot obtain a bond to secure the $454 million civil business fraud judgment against him as he pursues an appeal of the case, his attorneys said in a New York court filing Monday. Attorneys for Trump and his co-defendants in the fraud case argued that it was "impossible" for them to secure a complete appeal bond, which would "effectively" require "cash reserves approaching $1 billion." Trump in a deposition last year claimed to have "substantially in excess of $400 million in cash." But Monday's filing nevertheless asserted that obtaining a bond for the full $464 million judgment is unattainable. The defendants had previously offered to post a $100 million bond, less than one-fourth the total judgment, in order to pause James from collecting the penalties during the appeal process.

The CEO of the Chubb insurance company on Wednesday defended providing former President Donald Trump with a $91.6 million appeal bond in the civil case where he was found liable for defaming writer E. Jean Carroll after she accused him of rape. "When Chubb issues an appeal bond, it isn't making judgments about the claims, even when the claims involve alleged reprehensible conduct," Greenberg wrote in the letter, which was obtained by CNBC. "It would be wrong for us to do so and we are in no way supporting the defendant. We are supporting and are part of the justice system plumbing included in this case." Chubb has been under fire since last week when Trump revealed he had obtained the appeal bond from the company.

Read previewFormer President Donald Trump got a rare bit of good news on Wednesday as the judge overseeing his criminal case in Georgia dismissed three of the counts against him. And the judge did not dismiss the vast majority of the counts in the indictment, dismissing six out of 41 counts overall. So far, 10 criminal counts against Trump remain. Trump himself pressured Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "find" 11,780 votes that would flip the election results in his favor. He wrote that prosecutors didn't sufficiently explain how public officials would have violated their oaths of office if they allowed Trump a victory.

Trump’s efforts to run out the clock on his federal election trial are also bearing fruit. The New York criminal case involves a hush money payment to a former adult film actress. He wants the judge to push back the trial until after the Supreme Court rules on his presidential immunity case. This seems a long shot since the hush money payment was made before the 2016 election and before Trump took office. Why the credibility of the legal system depends on due processTrump’s motivation in delaying the trials is not just to put off his multiple days of judgment.

Former President Donald Trump has not shown that he has enough cash to cover the full amount of a $464 million civil fraud judgment if he loses his appeal, New York's chief law officer warned in a court filing Monday evening. "Defendants have never demonstrated that Mr. Trump's liquid assets—which may fluctuate over time—will be enough to satisfy the full amount of this judgment following appeal," James told a New York appeals court. Without a full bond, the civil fraud defendants — Trump, his two adult sons, his company and its top executives — might also try to "evade" or exacerbate enforcement of the judgment if they lose the appeal, James warned. She urged the appeals court to reject Trump's bid to stay the judgment with a $100 million bond, less than a quarter of the total amount awarded by Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron. Attorneys for Trump did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment on James' filing.

But officials say he recently tried to change the addresses for major assets from NY to Florida. AdvertisementDonald Trump tried — but failed — to switch the addresses of key assets from Trump Tower in New York to Florida, officials with the state attorney general's office said in their latest civil fraud case filing. Trump attempted to switch the Trump Tower addresses of several key assets to new addreses in Florida, state officials allege. AdvertisementFinally, Trump's lawyers claimed the "proper address" for Trump Tower in Chicago — another defendant in the fraud case — is Trump's Jupiter, Florida golf course, rather than Trump Tower in New York. In his final judgment, dated February 22, the judge uses the Manhattan Trump Tower address for all six of these defendants — not the Florida addresses Trump claimed.

Three days after Donald J. Trump posted a $91.6 million bond in the defamation case he lost recently to the writer E. Jean Carroll, her lawyer on Monday suggested she was considering filing yet another defamation lawsuit against the former president. The lawyer raised the prospect of a new lawsuit after Mr. Trump in recent days repeatedly lashed out at Ms. Carroll, using the same kind of disparaging language that led to the huge judgment against him in January. “The statute of limitations for defamation in most jurisdictions is between one and three years,” Roberta A. Kaplan, Ms. Carroll’s lawyer, said in a statement Monday morning. “As we said after the last jury verdict, we continue to monitor every statement that Donald Trump makes about our client.”In a separate court filing, Ms. Kaplan told the federal judge overseeing the case that she and Mr. Trump’s lawyers had reached an agreement on the details of his proposed $91.6 million bond. The bond — provided by Federal Insurance Company, an arm of the insurance giant Chubb — will prevent Ms. Carroll from collecting her multi-million-dollar judgment while Mr. Trump appeals the defamation verdict.

NEW YORK (AP) — An attorney for a longtime advice columnist who won an $83.3 million defamation award against Donald Trump suggested Monday that a new defamation lawsuit was possible against the ex-president after he resumed verbal attacks against her at a weekend rally. “As we said after the last jury verdict, we continue to monitor every statement that Donald Trump makes about our client, E. Jean Carroll,” Kaplan said. Photos You Should See View All 60 Images“This woman is not a believable person,” Trump said Saturday. Donald Trump on Monday once again denied writer E. Jean Carroll's rape and defamation claims against him, despite facing nearly $90 million in civil penalties over similar denials. Carroll sued Trump in New York federal court for defaming her, after he denied the rape claim and accused her of trying to sell books. In 2022, Carroll sued Trump a second time for battery and defamation relating to the alleged rape and a subsequent denial after he left the White House. A federal civil jury last May awarded Carroll $5 million in damages in that case after finding Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation. In January, another federal civil jury in Manhattan ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million for defaming Carroll through the statements he made as president.

Former President Donald Trump on Saturday stood by his 2019 statement that writer E. On top of the $83.3 million in damages is a $5 million sexual abuse and defamation verdict that Carroll won against Trump last year. Trump also shared his concerns about Lewis Kaplan, the federal judge who denied his request to delay the defamation judgment, calling him a "Trump-deranged, angry man." Trump must stow $500M cash in a bank to cover the appeal bond for his NY fraud case, experts say. His next appeal bond will cost him far more. By posting another appeal bond. Similar to the more familiar jail bond, an appeal bond is a promise of payment that's backed by collateral, meaning cash or property. The premium on a half-billion-dollar appeal bond could run anywhere from $250,000 to north of one million dollars, just to purchase the bond, experts guestimated.
