Get the inside scoop on today’s biggest stories in business, from Wall Street to Silicon Valley — delivered daily. Those worries are pushing the city to look for ways to get developers to build more housing — including affordable units, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor told Insider. In order to ease the hardships that some residents are facing, Castor said the city is incentivizing developers to increase housing supply generally. An influx of residents has helped drive up housing prices Tampa. Typically, such arrangements let builders move ahead with projects if development plans include affordable or workforce housing.

But I think our role as a social movement is not to be simply a wing of the Republican Party. Our job is to be that standard-bearer of holding that North Star up, saying this is where we’re going. Eighty percent of Americans disagree with the notion that abortion should be legal up until the moment of birth. Thirteen percent of Americans believe abortion should be illegal under all circumstances. CNN —Arguably the least interesting thing about Leonard Bernstein — the legendary conductor and composer now being played by Bradley Cooper in an upcoming Netflix biopic called “Maestro”— was his nose. However, any non-Jewish person putting on a fake nose in order to portray a Jew is colliding with a grim history. I think we can and must discern between Cooper’s nose prosthesis and, for example, the virulent antisemitism embedded in the works of beloved children’s author Roald Dahl. I don’t want to watch “Maestro.” I don’t really care whether you do, so long as you respect my feelings. You cannot have a non-Jewish actor putting on a fake nose in order to play a Jew and not at least pause for a moment to consider the history.

CNN —The Venice Film Festival has unveiled its lineup amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA actors and WGA writers strike. While the movie lineup is filled with A-list actors and big-name directors, it remains unclear which talent will be allowed to actually attend the festival amid the strike. Festival director Alberto Barbera said in his opening speech if the strike is still ongoing there will likely be premieres without the film’s cast on the red carpet. In the meantime, producers can apply for SAG-AFTRA waivers so the stars of their films can attend and not break strike rules. Many white evangelical Christians love Donald Trump — a fact of American politics that has shaped the makeup and rulings of the Supreme Court, the culture and morality wars waged by the Republican Party and the political evolution and power of evangelicals themselves. At the same time, some forms of evangelical Christianity are becoming less Christian, with believers less likely to attend church and less likely to embrace some of the faith’s most bedrock beliefs. How did millions of Americans go from “I Kissed Dating Goodbye” to Mr. Trump, who appeared on the cover of Playboy magazine? It was never ordained that he would become a man compared to biblical figures. As Jon Ward sees it, truly understanding American politics right now requires us to have a much more nuanced and informed perspective on evangelical culture and history.

Alabama Republicans on Friday defied a U.S. Supreme Court order by passing a new congressional map that includes only one majority-Black district. The effects of phones and social media on teenagers — and adults — continues to be at the center of public health, tech, civil liberties and more. In March, Utah’s Republican governor, Spencer Cox, signed an extensive package of laws intended to limit kids’ access to social media platforms, including time restrictions and requirements that parents and guardians have access to private messages and posts. Utah’s laws were among the first in a tranche of actions by state governments, like those of Montana and Louisiana, which have greatly limited access to certain social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, either for minors or all users. Some researchers have alleged that social media is responsible for increases in anxiety and depression. But the governor told me he wasn’t worried.

Opioids may not work for back pain, study finds

The authors found that in terms of effects on back and neck pain, opioids weren’t any more helpful than the placebo. More people in the opioid group had ongoing pain at weeks 26 and 52 than in the placebo group. The opioid group had worse mental health scores and more reports of nausea, dizziness and constipation than the placebo group. Opioids and painThe study authors and experts who weren’t involved in the new study have theories on why opioids weren’t found to be more helpful than the placebo. “The good news is most people with acute low back pain and neck pain recover within 6 weeks naturally.”The authors studied nonspecific back or neck pain, which is pain with an unknown cause.

CNN —French film director Justine Triet condemned what she called French President Emmanuel Macron’s “shocking” repression of the pension reform protests during her Palme d’Or acceptance speech at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday. “The commodification of culture that the neoliberal government defends is in the process of breaking the French cultural exception,” Triet continued. Triet is just the third woman to win the Palme d’Or, one of cinema’s tpp prizes, after New Zealand’s Jane Campion and France’s Julia Ducournau. “Happy to see the Palme d’Or awarded to Justine Triet, the 10th for France! ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ Wins the Palme d’Or

The 76th Cannes Film Festival ended Saturday with the Palme d’Or awarded to “Anatomy of a Fall.” Directed by Justine Triet, this intellectual thriller centers on a woman who is brought to trial after the mysterious death of her husband. Written by Triet and Arthur Harari, the film was an early favorite with critics. Triet is the third woman to have won the Palme; Julia Ducournau won in 2021 for “Titane,” and Jane Campion took the prize in 1993 for “The Piano.”The Palme was presented to Triet by Jane Fonda, who noted the “historic” number of women — seven — who had films competing for the top honor. The strong main competition, with a jury led by the director Ruben Ostlund, effectively announced that the festival had returned to full strength after several unsteady pandemic years. An icy exploration of the banality of evil — the family eats, relaxes and sleeps to the constant sounds of screams, shouts and gunfire — the movie sharply divided the critics here.
