How JFK’s Secrets Fed Conspiracy Culture
  + stars: | 2023-11-18 | by ( Timothy Naftali | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The assassination of President John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963, remains America’s ur-conspiracy—a source of continuing skepticism about the possibility of official truth for both the left and the right. Sixty years later, it’s time to acknowledge that a major reason for this enduring suspicion is Kennedy himself. Contrary to the image that he and his allies worked so hard to promote while he was alive, JFK was a man of secrets, and when he died he was engaged in many active conspiracies, both small and large. None of them was responsible for his death, but each would entail a cover-up to protect his legacy. And these cover-ups had a deeply negative effect on the American public’s trust in government, including its ability to get to the bottom of what really happened in Dallas in 1963.

REUTERS/Elijah Nouvelage Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Major U.S. airlines and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said Monday they expect record air travel over the Thanksgiving holiday air travel period. Airlines for America says Nov. 26 will be a record-setting air travel day with 3.2 million passengers. The record travel comes despite airline flight cuts to New York airports because of air traffic controller staffing. A government watchdog said in June critical ATC facilities face significant staffing challenges, posing risks to air traffic operations. In the summer of 2022, there were 41,498 flights from New York airports in which ATC staffing was a contributing factor in delays.

There’s a difference between ground speed and speed in the air (indicated air speed, essentially the speed of the plane in relation to the air around it). The jet stream explainedThe jet stream is a “core of strong winds around five to seven miles above the Earth’s surface, blowing from west to east,” as the UK’s Met Office describes it. Seven miles above the planet’s surface is equivalent to around 37,000 feet – which means that aircraft at cruising altitude slip easily into the jet stream. “This increase in the temperature gradient is amplifying the speed of the jet stream, which is driven by temperature differences. Either way, these planes are saving time and money.”The jet stream is making planes go around 200mph faster than average.

Planes packed with summer travelers boosted Delta Air Lines to a $1.11 billion profit in the third quarter, and the carrier said Thursday that it expects revenue to keep rising into the holiday season. Profit was up 59% from a year earlier, as strong ticket sales — especially for premium seats and international flights — helped Delta shrug off higher labor costs. “I think we’re closing the year strong, and the holiday bookings that we see right now are pretty good,” CEO Ed Bastian said in an interview. For the fourth quarter, Delta said revenue will rise as much as 11% from a year ago and it will earn between $1.05 to $1.30 per share. Bastian expressed confidence that Delta and other carriers can raise prices enough to cover any increase in fuel expense.

AdvertisementAdvertisementEven though Russian airspace is closed to US airlines, many Americans may still end up flying through Russian skies. This includes four European carriers: Air Serbia, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, and Belarus' Belavia. Emirates' flight path from Dubai to Los Angeles on September 25 showed it flew over Russian airspace. Looking at the time of writing for mid-November, a ticket on Air India is nearly $2,000 cheaper than American. This was a particular concern earlier this year when Chinese airlines were using Russian airspace on routes to the US.

The Carry-On Bag That Saved My Trip and My Spine

This cycle of luggage neglect ended when I received the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bag in the 40-liter size for Christmas. On a recent family vacation, the duffel bag saved my trip and my spine. Long story not that short, I was a sweaty mess, but we made the flight, in large part thanks to the Black Hole Duffel. It lives up to its Black Hole name: This thing swallows everything I cram inside it. DeSantis also talked up Florida's law that bans abortion at six weeks, one of the most restrictive in the nation.
