As a psychologist who researches emotional intelligence, I know people with high EQ tend to have a critical skill I like to call "emotional sovereignty." When you know how to handle your emotions, you can harness them for creativity, energy, deeper relationships, and greater happiness and fulfillment. Others may be surprised by the fact that you no longer suppress your emotions — they might even be a little uncomfortable with it at first. Sidestep injury with the lateral lunge
  + stars: | 2024-04-25 | by ( Dana Santas | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
The side or lateral lunge is one of the best exercises for building lateral stability and mobility in the often neglected frontal plane. The side lunge also improves the mobility and stability of your hips, knees and ankles to avoid related strains and sprains. By strengthening the muscles involved in lateral movement with side lunges, you can accomplish these chores more efficiently while reducing your risk of muscle strain or injury. Training with side lunges can increase your lateral movement strength, enhance your mobility and boost your confidence to be more adventurous outdoors. The side or lateral lunge strengthens the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, adductors and core to help you ward off injuries.

Opinion: Why gardens and poems rhyme
  + stars: | 2024-04-22 | by ( Opinion Tess Taylor | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
This year, particularly, I’ve been meditating on the fact that gardens and poems share critical, linked invitations. And because even as the planet warms, gardens and poems help cool us off, practically and emotionally. I don’t think I’m overstating the case to say that time spent with poems and gardens build pathways that actually repair us. In their own small plots, poems build diverse networks as well: Sinking into the rhythms and pleasures of literature stimulates the parts of our brains attuned to empathy, helping us build attention, kindness, compassion, regard. Gardens and poems invite that kind of dwelling.

Why stretching isn’t always a cure-all for pain
  + stars: | 2024-04-16 | by ( Dana Santas | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
And since stretching is often touted as a cure-all for pain, I have seen too many individuals get caught in an unhealthy, painful cycle in which they stretch even more to relieve the tension and pain that they are unwittingly increasing with their continued stretching. When stretching isn’t the answerBefore using stretching as a quick fix for muscle tension, it’s important to ask yourself why you feel tight in the first place so you can determine if stretching isn’t advisable. PeopleImages/iStockphoto/Getty ImagesWhen muscles feel tense, the standard assumption is that they are short and tight, making stretching a logical solution. As an example, let’s look at a common issue I encounter in my clients as a mobility coach: tight hamstrings. For instance, if you’re experiencing low back pain related to tension, a combination of stretching and strengthening would yield best results.

Grip strength can indicate health and longevity
  + stars: | 2024-04-01 | by ( Dana Santas | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
While it may seem like a small part of your body’s total strength, grip strength is a foundational component of physical fitness, linked to injury prevention, as well as a reliable benchmark for many aspects of health and functional independence as we age. Tasks such as carrying groceries, opening doors and jars, and even getting out of a chair all require adequate grip strength. How to assess and track your grip strength at homeIn clinical settings, a hand dynamometer measures grip strength by gauging the force applied when squeezing its handle. To test your grip strength at home without a dynamometer, use a bathroom scale or tennis ball to give you rough, trackable measurements. Exercises to strengthen your gripImproving grip strength involves incorporating specific exercises to address all three aspects of grip strength.

In 2003, Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom imagined a “technologically mature” civilization could easily create a simulated world. With simulated worlds far outnumbering the “real” world, the likelihood that we are in a simulation would be significantly higher than not. Remember, the simulations would be so good that you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a physical and a simulated world. Either the signals are being beamed directly into your brain, or we are simply AI characters inside the simulation. Already, millions of humans are chatting with AI characters, and millions of dollars are pouring into making AI characters more realistic.

CNN —The version of Easter you’re likely familiar with probably starts with how the Bible tells the story. As I show in my book, “God’s Ghostwriters: Enslaved Christians and the Marking of the Bible,” ancient dictation was bare bones and idiosyncratic. Someone might respond that while enslaved and formerly enslaved secretaries and copyists were present, they were still not authors. What we know is that Paul and Tertius wrote the Letter to the Romans together and that collaboration moves us into the realm of speculation. Saying that Paul “wrote Romans” when Romans itself claims that it was written by Tertius isn’t just speculative, it’s wrong.

That’s at least what scientists expect to take place in swaths of Mexico, Canada and the United States during April 8’s total solar eclipse. They discovered that cumulus clouds dissipate during eclipses because of the relationship between solar radiation and the formation processes of the clouds. Shallow cumulus clouds, in particular, serve a critical function. But what exactly shallow cumulus clouds’ role is when it comes to the rapidly warming climate remains a long-standing subject of uncertainty in the scientific community. De Roode hopes those across North America gearing up for the next solar eclipse remember to keep an eye out for any vanishing low-lying cumulus clouds.

With the announcement of his running mate, Silicon Valley attorney and entrepreneur Nicole Shanahan, Kennedy’s campaign will expand its ballot access. On the surface, this double dislike seems puzzling: Shouldn’t one of the two parties have figured out how to elevate a more popular general election candidate? Opinion: ISIS is making a comeback

CNN —If ISIS was indeed responsible for the attack Friday at a Moscow-area concert venue that killed at least 133 people, it would suggest that, unfortunately, the terror group is making something of a comeback. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack; a US official told CNN the US has no reason to doubt it. Through that attack, ISIS-K showed that the group, which is very anti-Shia, could target a hostile state like predominantly Shia Iran. In March alone, a Russian state news agency said the country had thwarted multiple ISIS-related incidents, including a plan to attack a synagogue in Moscow. As for capability, the ISIS-K attack in Iran earlier this year demonstrated that the group could carry out a large-scale attack outside of its home base in Afghanistan.
