CNN —Satirical news site The Onion won the auction to acquire conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ Infowars, which was sold off as part of a defamation settlement after he falsely called the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre a hoax. The Onion’s bid was backed by the families of eight victims of school shooting and one first responder. Jones was previously ordered to pay $1.5 billion to families of the Sandy Hook shooting victims. Jones had used Infowars to spread some of the most disturbing and disgusting lies and conspiracy theories into the public discourse. Though Collins declined to detail the bid amount, he said it was the highest and that the funding came from The Onion itself.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement that the two would meet at 11 a.m. at Biden’s invitation, adding that additional details about the meeting will be released. Incoming first lady Melania Trump has also been invited to the White House to meet with first lady Jill Biden, an official in the East Wing told CNN, though it is unclear when that might happen. Trump did not host Biden in 2020, however, as he fought the election results based on falsehoods about voter fraud. CNN —Pentagon officials are holding informal discussions about how the Department of Defense would respond if Donald Trump issues orders to deploy active-duty troops domestically and fire large swaths of apolitical staffers, defense officials told CNN. “Troops are compelled by law to disobey unlawful orders,” said another defense official. “But the question is what happens then – do we see resignations from senior military leaders? At the time, defense officials tried to include as few civilian employees as possible to limit the impact to the workforce, sources said. Outside of the eight states with the ballot measures, certain cities and municipalities in three states, as well as Washington, D.C., have allowed noncitizens to vote in some local elections. Supporters of the ballot measures have argued that they are a way to get ahead of any potential problems related to noncitizen voting. Passage of the amendments marks the latest chapter of Republican's ongoing efforts to put unfounded claims of noncitizen voting at the center of a broader political strategy. Former President Donald Trump has long made false claims that noncitizen voting is resulting in widespread fraud and that Democrats have helped migrants enter the country to cast those ballots. The Republican National Committee’s election integrity campaign also highlighted noncitizen voting as a danger that it warned could be a source of widespread fraud in the 2024 election.

As Election Day finally arrives, election officials, legal experts and researchers are bracing for a flood of disinformation and legal claims as vote counting begins. The final week of the campaign featured three dynamics that could lead to a protracted legal dispute if the results are close, legal experts said. Election experts say that if a clear winner emerges quickly and voting proceeds without major disruptions, large numbers of Americans may have faith in the results. A misleading advertisement from the Election Integrity Network says “The Glitch Is In” alongside a carousel of news coverage of such procedural Election Day issues. The Election Integrity Network’s founder, Cleta Mitchell, promotes her thousand-strong group as a kind of “national neighborhood watch.”Researchers also point to a new kind of infrastructure around documenting and sharing such rumors on Election Day.

On the last day of a brutal, wild and tightly contested campaign, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris blitzed voters Monday with their final pleas for turnout. Harris and Trump both put their emphasis Monday on Pennsylvania, suggesting they still believe "Keystone State" is more than just a nickname. Its 19 electoral votes went for Trump in 2016 and Biden, who abandoned his re-election bid this summer, in 2020. Harris in particular focused on Pennsylvania, barnstorming the state with all four of her final-day rallies. Most of the rest of the country is considered safe turf for either Harris or Trump.

CNN —Several non-credible bomb threats that briefly disrupted voting at two Georgia polling places originated from Russia, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger told reporters Tuesday. “Anything that can get us to fight amongst ourselves - they can count that as a victory.”Raffensperger, a Republican, did not elaborate on how exactly state officials determined the bomb threats came from Russia. The non-credible threats caused the temporary closure of polling places at the Etris Community Center and Gullatt Elementary in Union City, just outside of Atlanta, according to Fulton County Police. An officer told him and other voters they couldn’t enter the site to vote because of a bomb threat. “They had to remove all the workers, they couldn’t let anyone in until they assessed the threats,” said Osborne.

Meta last week began blocking advertisers from creating or running new ads about US social issues, elections or politics across its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. But experts say that previous moves by social media companies — such as cutting their own internal safety teams — could undercut their current efforts. Former President Donald Trump and many of his supporters have already made repeated false claims that Democrats are cheating in the election. But since then, those companies have made cuts to those teams and walked back policies designed to restrict false claims about politics and elections. Last year, they said they would no longer remove false claims that the 2020 election was stolen.
