You can find foreclosed properties for sale on online listing sites or in your local newspaper. Often, you can browse foreclosed properties in your area using the same methods you would to buy a regular home, such as online listing sites like Zillow. Foreclosed properties owned by the government-sponsored enterprises Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac can also be found online. Fannie Mae's program for Fannie-owned foreclosed properties is called HomePath, while Freddie Mac's is called HomeSteps. Just be prepared for repair costs, as many foreclosed properties need significant updates before they're habitable.

CNN —The Curiosity rover has made its most unusual find to date on Mars: rocks made of pure sulfur. “I think it’s the strangest find of the whole mission and the most unexpected,” said Ashwin Vasavada, Curiosity project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Previously, while exploring Mars, NASA’s Spirit rover broke one of its wheels and had to drag it along while using the other five to drive backward. And Vasavada says it’s what inspired the team to “look behind” the Curiosity rover — otherwise they wouldn’t have seen the crushed sulfur. To determine what process formed the sulfur rocks, the team considered nearby bedrock instead.

Two Canadians died from infections caused by listeria after drinking popular milk substitutes based on almonds, oats, cashews and coconuts that were sold under the Silk and Great Value brands, the country’s health department said Wednesday night. Another 10 infections, most of them affecting residents of Ontario, have been confirmed by laboratory tests, the department, Health Canada, said in its health notice. But she said the plant is in Ontario and that none of the products were distributed outside of Canada. Because of Canada’s privacy laws, no personal information about the victims was released. The refrigerated plant-based products are sold in milk cartons and are viewed by some as a healthier alternative to cows’ milk.

An assumable mortgage allows qualifying buyers to acquire the interest rate, current principal balance, and other conditions of a seller's existing loan. In June, we bought it for $400,000, assuming the seller's mortgage at a 2.75% interest rate with 26 years left on a 30-year fixed-rate loan. The assumable mortgage process was actually straightforwardBefore starting the assumption, we thought it would be very difficult. It seemed that they were trying to steer us away from the assumable mortgage and toward getting a new one. They even offered us a lower interest rate below the current rate, but it was still significantly higher than what I was getting through this assumable process.

Amateur buildEngineer Ashok Aliseril spent 18 months building a four-seater plane during the pandemic, helped by his daughter. Aliseril briefly considered buying an older aircraft, and looked at some that had been built in the 1960s and 1970s. After researching self-assembly aircraft kits, he came across a four-seater plane manufactured by South African company Sling Aircraft that ticked all the right boxes. “I would say generally, anyone can get involved in these sorts of builds.”Lockdown projectHe built a shed in his garden to complete the build. Now, experts in New Zealand are scrambling to confirm whether a 5-meter (16-foot) carcass that recently washed ashore on the country’s South Island is the near-mythical spade-toothed whale. After inspection and consultation with marine-mammal experts, scientists believed the carcass was that of a male spade-toothed whale, though more tests were needed. It may take several weeks or months for the DNA to be processed and a final species ID to be confirmed, according to New Zealand’s conservation department. If the carcass is confirmed as a spade-toothed whale and dissected, Hendriks from the DOC said scientists will be very interested in details of its its stomach and gastrointestinal tract. “This can tell us about what the whale has been eating, but it is also significant because every beaked whale species has a unique stomach plan,” she said.

Boeing has started certification flight testing of its long-delayed 777-9 with U.S. aviation regulators onboard, the U.S. planemaker said in an emailed statement. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment out of office hours. Type inspection authorization is typically associated with the start of the certification process, made after the FAA has examined technical data. The milestone allows FAA pilots to participate in flight testing needed to certify the plane for normal operation. Boeing has said that the 777-9 test fleet will undergo the most thorough commercial flight test effort the planemaker has ever undertaken.

CNN —When two US avocado inspectors were assaulted and detained at a police roadblock in the Mexican state of Michoacán last month, it sparked a costly international crisis. ‘Green gold’Avocados, the creamy fruit with the industry nickname “green gold,” are big business. Nearly three-quarters of Mexican avocados come from Michoacán, a state along the country’s Pacific coast with a volcanic belt running through it that makes its soil ideal for farming. The office of the Michoacán state prosecutor told CNN last month that they’ve opened an investigation into the incident. In 2022, exports of Mexican avocados were similarly halted for several days after one of the US inspectors working in Michoacán received a threatening phone call.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Purchase Licensing Rights New Tab , opens new tabJuly 13 (Reuters) - OpenAI whistleblowers have filed a complaint with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, calling for an investigation over the artificial intelligence company's allegedly restrictive non-disclosure agreements, according to a letter seen by Reuters. The AI company allegedly made employees sign agreements that required them to waive their federal rights to whistleblower compensation, according to the letter. The whistleblowers requested the SEC to fine OpenAI for each improper agreement made to the extent the agency deemed appropriate. The whistleblowers alleged that OpenAI issued overly restrictive employment, severance and non-disclosure agreements to its employees, which could have led to penalties against workers who raised concerns about OpenAI to federal authorities. The letter also asked the SEC to require OpenAI to produce every contract that contained a non-disclosure agreement, including employment agreements, severance agreements and investor agreements for inspection.

In a boost for Toyota, Indian state cuts levies on hybrid cars
  + stars: | 2024-07-11 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
A move by India's Uttar Pradesh state to waive some levies on hybrid cars will make them 10% cheaper, delivering Japan's Toyota Motor a big win in lobbying efforts and raising industry and analyst expectations that other states could follow suit. Just as it does with electric cars, the government of India's most populous state will also waive the registration tax on some hybrid car sales, it said in a July 5 notification. Hybrid cars offer fuel savings as they operate on both electric motors and combustion engines. "This is a sizeable incentive provided by a state for hybrid cars. Upon inspection of his trousers, officers discovered six sealed bags containing a variety of exotic snakes, including milk snakes, western hognose snakes, corn snakes, Texas rat snakes and bullsnakes. An accompanying video showed two border agents holding up large transparent bags filled with the multi-colored live reptiles, often sought out as exotic pets. While none of the serpents were venomous, at least four of the species are considered alien to China, which could constitute a violation of Chinese biosafety law. The customs authority said it would hold the man legally responsible in accordance with the law without specifying an exact punishment.

During nine months of war, Amani Zanin’s extended family has fled from place to place, escaping the Israeli bombardments that have flattened many neighborhoods in northern Gaza. But this week, when the Israeli military issued repeated calls for Palestinians to clear out of Gaza City, the Zanin family and many others decided not to leave. “The road is not safe,” said Ms. Zanin, whose family is now sheltering in a school building. Exhausted by the constant threat of bombardment and encircled by death and decimation, families in the northern Gaza Strip who heeded earlier warnings to flee are now taking the risk of staying put. Fliers dropped by the Israeli military over parts of Gaza City and posted on social media laid out four “safe corridors” Palestinians could use to get to central Gaza “quickly and without inspection.”

Earlier this year, the EU launched investigations into China’s state support for its wind turbine and solar panel suppliers. Now, China will investigate if the bloc’s probes violate the two sides’ economic treaty and if they have hurt the country’s trade with the 27 EU member states. The announcement comes just days after the provisional additional duties on imports of Chinese-made EVs into the EU came into effect. Beijing has spoken out strongly against the EU tariffs, saying it will make “all necessary moves” to safeguard China’s interests. According to Wednesday’s announcement, MOFCOM is launching its latest investigation in response to a June request by an industry group in China.
