CNN —As Sudan marks the grim anniversary of a year-long conflict, aid agencies have warned that the country teeters on the edge of collapse, facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis that has been largely ignored by the rest of the world. Increased rainfall means plants release more pollen when they bloom, and higher numbers of thunderstorms cause pollen grains to burst, making them more irritating and worsening symptoms. Shifting wind patterns in some parts of the world are carrying pollen over longer distances, too. Experts think more exposure to pollen equals more chances to be sensitized, which equals more allergies. Citing diminishing chicken supply, Chick-fil-A will back off its pledge never to serve chicken that was fed antibiotics, and instead it will embrace a looser industry standard: “no antibiotics important to human medicine.” Chick-fil-A first announced that it would abandon antibiotics in 2014. The change comes after Tyson, America’s biggest poultry company, last summer ended its eight-year-pledge to keep antibiotics out of its chicken. That particular disease is not treatable with antibiotics, but other diseases that can kill chickens do respond to antibiotics. In addition to chickens’ health, antibiotics are particularly important to promote poultry growth — particularly for items like large broiler chickens. It noted in that 2007 publication that “an appropriate balance should be struck between animal health needs and human health considerations – human health being, however, paramount compared to animal health.”

Flaco, the Eurasian eagle-owl whose escape from the Central Park Zoo and life on the loose captivated New York, had potentially lethal amounts of rodenticide in his system as well as a severe pigeon virus when he died last month after striking an Upper West Side building. The findings, from a necropsy conducted by Bronx Zoo pathologists after Flaco’s death on Feb. 23, validated widespread concerns about the hazards he faced living as a free bird in Manhattan for just over a year. He would have turned 14 this month. “Flaco’s severe illness and death are ultimately attributed to a combination of factors — infectious disease, toxin exposures and traumatic injuries — that underscore the hazards faced by wild birds, especially in an urban setting,” the Wildlife Conservation Society, which operates the Central Park and Bronx Zoos, said in a statement. Initial necropsy findings released the day after Flaco died suggested he had sustained an acute traumatic injury to his body, with signs of substantial hemorrhage under his sternum and in his back near his liver.

NEW YORK (AP) — The nation's top public health agency is expanding a program that tests international travelers for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. Those locations should provide more information about respiratory infections coming out of South America, Africa and Asia, particularly, CDC officials said. But they are given a COVID-19 home test kit to take with them, CDC officials say. That testing is for COVID-19, but CDC officials are evaluating the possibility of monitoring wastewater for other things, Walker said. The CDC program has a current budget of about $37 million.

CNN —A California medical facility is trying to contact about 300 people who were possibly exposed to measles after a child was treated for the contagious viral illness at a hospital in Sacramento last week, officials said. The child had returned from international travel and was evaluated March 5 at UC Davis Health’s emergency department between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. The hospital said it “has the situation under control” and noted it began contacting about 300 in the facility who may have been exposed. Measles often begins with a mild to moderate fever, along with a cough, runny nose, and red/watery eyes, health officials detailed. A total of 45 measles cases have been reported in 17 states since the beginning of the year, according to the CDC.
