Florida ranks sixth among states with the largest shares of homeowners who don't have meaningful insurance. Putnam County, in the northern part of the state, is at 32.9%, while in Miami-Dade County, nearly 25% lack homeowners insurance that would protect them from calamity. In Miami-Dade County, 33.5% of homeowners pay $4,000-plus a year, ranking it in the top 10 among the country's most populous counties. Curtis, who has lived in Taylor County for 40 years and is a former forester, said many of her neighbors can't afford to pay for insurance. Hurricane Helene’s massive wind field was wide enough to stretch from Indianapolis to Washington, DC, and its huge size will result in higher storm surge and dangerous winds that stretch well inland. The storm is already lashing Florida as it continues to intensify and track north toward the Florida’s Big Bend. The hurricane unleashed its fury on parts of Mexico’s Yucátan Peninsula and Cuba Wednesday. Flooding rainfall plunged cars underwater in parts of Mexico’s state of Quintana Roo while powerful ocean waves pounded the coastline. Helene’s strong winds also knocked out power to more than 50,000 people in western Cuba’s province of Pinar del Río.

Hurricane warnings were issued Tuesday for a wide stretch of Florida’s Gulf Coast ahead of Tropical Storm Helene’s anticipated landfall as a major hurricane later this week, forecasters said. Officials in Mexico also issued hurricane warnings for a large section of the Yucatan Peninsula, stretching from the tourist hotspot of Tulum to Cabo Catoche, on the peninsula’s northern tip, the National Hurricane Center said in an afternoon advisory. The storm is expected to strengthen into a hurricane on Wednesday as it moves across the eastern Gulf of Mexico before becoming a major storm Thursday, according to the advisory. Helene's storm surge is expected to raise water levels in Tampa Bay by as much as 8 feet. Helene's large size will likely mean the storm's hazards will hit an extensive area, the advisory says.

The hurricane watch extends from Indian Pass in north-west Florida near Panama City, down to Englewood, and includes Tampa Bay. Hurricane and tropical storm watches are now in effect for the entire western coast of the Sunshine State. A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible, and is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated onslaught of tropical-storm-force winds and conditions. Outside of the U.S., a hurricane watch is also in effect for parts of eastern Mexico from Cabo Catoche to Tulum and Pinar del Río in Cuba.

With little time to prepare, Tampa General Hospital began erecting a 10-foot-high flood barrier around the facility Monday because of the chance for storm surge and shifts in the storm’s track. A tropical storm watch was raised Monday afternoon for Florida’s Dry Tortugas and part of the Keys and Monday evening for Bonita Beach to Flamingo, where a storm surge watch is also in effect. Strong, potentially damaging winds and storm surge are likely near where the system ultimately comes ashore. Hurricane and tropical storm watches are already in effect for parts of Mexico and Cuba. The “storm surge, wind, and rainfall impacts will extend well away from the center, particularly to the east of the system.

Orangeburg, South Carolina KFF Health News —Amari Marsh had just finished her junior year at South Carolina State University in May 2023 when she received a text message from a law enforcement officer. South Carolina state Rep. Seth Rose, a Democrat in Columbia and one of Marsh’s attorneys, called it a “really tragic” case. But at the hospital, Marsh learned that her infant, a girl, had not survived. Historically, birth outcomes for Black women in Orangeburg County, where Marsh lost her pregnancy, have ranked among the worst in South Carolina. She is taking classes at a local community college and hopes to reenroll at South Carolina State University to earn a four-year degree.

ISER Caribe executive director Stacey Williams dives underwater to clip lines of astroturf-like material where baby sea urchins are growing. The group is working to restore 5 acres of coral reef in Puerto Rico by planting fragments across six reefs and returning long-spined sea urchins to the ecosystem. Then, once the urchins reach young adult size, the researchers place them in a coral reef in need of extra support. Manzello said scientists used to think coral had a longer runway — perhaps until 2040 or 2050 — before conditions became so grim. A look at the underwater lab where ISER Caribe nurtures baby sea urchins.
