Right now, the streaming service is offering a discounted Starz add-on subscription for $0.99 per month for 6 months. Hulu one-upped its $1.99 deal from yesteryear by halving that to just $0.99 per month. Like the base Hulu deal, the Starz add-on offer ends at the end of the day on November 28. The original Hulu deal already tops our list of the best Black Friday streaming deals, and this only sends it over the edge. Starz is home to popular original hit series like "Power," "P-Valley," "Outlander," and "BMF: Black Mafia Family."

Several producers, agents, and other dealmakers also weighed in for this story about the content market and what the streamers are looking for. In short, broadcast network-type shows that will grab broad viewership are the top priority for Netflix and all its competitors. Comcast and Disney have hired investment banks to value Hulu, the next step in what's been a nearly five-year process to put the streaming service under one owner. Comcast, which owns one-third of Hulu, has hired Morgan Stanley , and Disney, which owns the other two-thirds, has hired JPMorgan Chase . Spokespeople for Comcast, Disney, Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan declined to comment. That deadline represents the final date at which Hulu's valuation will be assessed by both Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase. On Nov. 1, Comcast can force Disney to acquire its 33% stake in Hulu and/or Disney can trigger its option to acquire the stake from Comcast.

After 148 days of striking, TV and film writers reached a tentative agreement with studios and streamers regarding their work contracts. WGA members will vote on ratifying the agreement between Oct. 2 and 9, with some writers going back to work as early as next week. That could mean more early career writers get an opportunity to work and gain experience on the ground. Without an opportunity for syndication and international distribution on streaming services, residual pay for writers has been cut significantly as well. The contract also hikes minimum pay for various types of television shows and establishes minimum pay for late night talk shows on streaming services, like "The Amber Ruffin Show," which did not previously have established minimums.

After a months-long public campaign that began shortly after Mayor Brandon Johnson (right) took office in May, advocates reached a deal with restaurant industry lobbyists to phase out the tipped-minimum wage over five years. "The closest pending victory is in Chicago," said Saru Jayaraman, founder and president of the advocacy group One Fair Wage. Three-fourths said they would reduce the number of tipped workers on their payroll, and nearly half said the cuts would be significant. The $9.48 an hour wage most workers got cost the restaurant $5,449.61, he said, a fraction of the $17,198 in tips workers earned. That's one reason why the restaurant industry engaged in a kind of bidding war against itself, to find a compromise solution that politicians like Alderman Carlos Ramirez Rosa, Johnson's floor manager in the City Council, would buy.

The timeline to decide Hulu's ownership fate has been moved up, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said Wednesday. Comcast and Disney are set to begin those discussions on September 30, months earlier than the initial January 2024 deadline. Under the original 2019 agreement, Comcast can force Disney to buy (or Disney can require Comcast to sell) that remaining 33% stake in January 2024, at a guaranteed minimum total equity value of $27.5 billion. In May, Roberts said at an investor conference that Comcast would likely sell its 33% stake in Hulu to Disney at the beginning of next year. For Disney, the move to add Hulu content to Disney+ came as it focuses on its ad-supported Disney+ option to attract more subscribers and advertising revenue.

When it comes to Hulu, value is in the eye of the holder. However, Comcast claims Hulu is worth double what Disney is saying, according to Bloomberg — even in a tough media environment. "It's what would a willing buyer in a robust auction pay," Roberts said of Hulu's valuation at a MoffettNathanson conference in May. Another way to value Hulu is by comparing its EV-to-subscriber ratio with that of Netflix. By buying all of Hulu, Disney can position itself for the next big trend in media, Noell said.

The hike marks another nail in the coffin of the great streaming giveaway. Disney loses money in streaming offering that great deal. Disney reported smaller than expected losses in streaming last quarter, and has committed to getting the streaming business to profitability by 2024. It's going to do that by exercising pricing power and by scaling up its ad-supported streaming tier. The sweet streaming deal is over.

All of this turmoil will be on investors' minds as the media industry kicks off its earnings season this week, with Netflix up first on Wednesday. Netflix, with a new advertising model and push to stop password sharing, looks the best positioned compared with legacy media giants. At the top of the list is contending with Disney's TV networks, as that part of the business appears to be in a worse state than Iger had imagined. The labor fight blew up just as the industry has moved away from streaming growth at all costs. Disney CEO Bob Iger must decide whether to acquire all of Hulu and fold it into Disney+. By buying all of Hulu, Disney could integrate its content into Disney+, which would make the flagship Disney streamer a formidable challenger to Netflix. "You look at the Disney+ bundle with Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, and it's a pretty powerful combination," Nispel told Insider. Currently, the ad versions of Hulu and Disney+ each cost $8 per month while ad-free Hulu and Disney+ cost $15 and $11, respectively. The consensus among analysts about Disney's Hulu dilemma was neatly summarized by Barton Crockett of Rosenblatt Securities, whose price target implies 26% upside for Disney.

But in the past year, ad loads have crept up on almost all the top services, per MediaRadar. Now that streaming companies have fallen in love with ads, viewers can expect to see a lot more of them. Discovery+'s ad load grew 69%, to about 5 minutes per hour, while Hulu's jumped 38%, to 7.3 minutes per hour. MediaRadar shared numbers for standard commercial spots, which are the most common form of ads on streaming services. Disney+ Basic and Netflix's Basic with Ads are also increasing their ad loads — which is to be expected, as they're still ramping up.
