CNN —Dragons and zombies and Jedi, oh my. HBO’s gaudy show of force – with half the best-drama nominees and 127 bids overall, the highest total of any individual network or service – featured a combination of both. "Obi-Wan Kenobi," starring Ewan McGregor, was one of three "Star Wars" series to receive multiple Emmy nominations. Fabio Lovino/HBOWhen those nominees need to begin rehearsing their acceptance speeches is itself a source of mystery as of now. The last time a delay of the Emmys happened: 2001, after the September 11 terror attacks.

It will be interesting to see what enlarged role social media stats will also have on the publishing industry, given TikTok has assumed the position of a literary kingmaker. Apple unveiled a new set of accessibility features this week, including "Personal Voice," which aims to replicate a user's voice with AI after 15 minutes of training.
Two days before the "House of the Dragon" finale aired last fall, the episode was leaked online. The mysterious case of the leaked "House of the Dragon" finale is one step closer to being solved — and the alleged hacker's cat helped tipped off authorities. Last October, two days before the "Game of Thrones" spin-off's series finale was set to air, the episode was leaked to pirating sites. Despite the leak, "House of the Dragon" was quite succesfull with 9.3 million viewers tuning into the series finale legally. That made it HBO's most-watched finale since the "Game of Thrones" finale in 2019, per Variety.
LOS ANGELES, May 8 (Reuters) - Writing for a new season of "The Handmaid's Tale" and a coming "Game of Thrones" prequel was halted as a nearly week-long strike by thousands of film and television writers rippled across Hollywood on Monday. Writing of the dystopian drama stopped when the Writers Guild of America (WGA) called a strike last week, Chang told Reuters on Monday. Martin said in a blog post that the writers' room for prequel series "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight" was "closed for the duration of the strike." Warner Bros has not announced a release date for "The Hedge Knight." The second season of "House of the Dragon," another "Game of Thrones" prequel, began filming in April, Martin said, and will continue in London and Wales.

Phillipa Soo enjoys fantasy stories: “Lord of the Rings,” “House of the Dragon,” anything magical with kings and queens involved. That’s partly why, she says, she was drawn to this season’s Broadway revival of “Camelot,” based on the Arthurian legend and opening April 13 at Lincoln Center Theater. Soo, 32, stars opposite Andrew Burnap as Guenevere, King Arthur’s wife and ally — a role that’s long been associated with Julie Andrews, who originated the role onstage in 1960. Soo’s goal, then, is to make Guenevere “a real person,” someone driven above all by a desire to be loved. But this past year, she joined the “Into the Woods” Broadway revival as Cinderella, and then did a brief run as Sarah in “Guys and Dolls” at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
HBO's Casey Bloys revealed his content strategy on "The Watch" podcast and in a talk with Parrot Analytics. Bloys also shared what's ahead for HBO Max once it combines with Warner Bros. Despite economic pressures on streaming, he's not worried that HBO content will suffer. "Euphoria" is second only to "Game of Thrones" in most-viewed HBO shows, but Bloys was hesitant at first to develop its hit 2022 prequel "House of the Dragon," he told "The Watch." And he pointed to more Batman spinoffs like "The Penguin" that's coming to HBO Max and will star Colin Farrell.

HBO's "The Last of Us" had one of the network's biggest premieres with 4.7 million viewers. It's based on the hit 2013 video game of the same name. The hour-and-a-half series premiere was watched by 4.7 million viewers across linear TV and HBO Max on Sunday, the network announced on Tuesday. "Boardwalk Empire" remains HBO's overall second-biggest premiere of all time, with 4.8 million viewers in 2010. There are two installments of the game thus far, with "Part II" released in 2020.
More blockbuster TV shows like "Last of Us" should be shown on the big screen. It raised the question: Should more TV shows be put on the big screen? That event earned nearly $5 million, according to Fathom Events CEO Ray Nutt. The airings earned $2 million from just 205 theaters, according to The Los Angeles Times, and the episodes had already aired on HBO. Meanwhile, blockbuster shows like "House of the Dragon" and "The Rings of Power" had premiered on the small screen.
Jan 12 (Reuters) - Warner Bros Discovery Inc (WBD.O) is raising HBO Max's ad-free subscription fee in the United States for the first time since the streaming service was launched in 2020, the TV network said on Thursday, sending its shares down 3%. HBO Max, which also has an ad-supported tier, faces pressure from slowing user growth and tight competition from larger rivals Netflix Inc (NFLX.O) and Walt Disney Co's (DIS.N) Disney+. Netflix and Disney had also raised prices for some of their streaming services last year. Warner Bros Discovery, formed last year by the merger of AT&T Inc's (T.N) WarnerMedia unit and Discovery Inc, is pushing for internal changes including plans to combine HBO Max and Discovery+. It also made both HBO Max and Discovery+ available on Amazon.com Inc's (AMZN.O) Prime Video platform in select markets.

Discovery is raising the monthly price of HBO Max by $1 as the company looks to further invest in content and the user experience. The company said Thursday the HBO Max ad-free tier's price would increase to $15.99 a month from $14.99, the first price increase for HBO Max since it launched in May 2020. Golden Globe Award winners Steven Spielberg and Martin McDonagh pose with their prizes at the 80th edition of the annual show on Jan. 10, 2023, in Beverly Hills. Spielberg's autobiographical coming-of-age film "The Fabelmans" won best drama film and the dark friendship tale "The Banshees of Inisherin," captured best film, comedy or musical. The Globes' would-be comeback ended like many Globes ceremonies before it: with a triumphant Spielberg. Nominated 14 times by the Globes for best director, Spielberg also won the honor for the third time. Carmichael kicked off the 80th Golden Globes from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, with little of the fanfare that usually opens such ceremonies.

Once considered taboo in film and television, gay entertainers and characters will be hard to miss at the 80th Golden Globe Awards. Some of the evenings most nominated films — including sci-fi dramedy “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and psychological thriller “Tár,” — and TV series that include “The White Lotus” and “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” — star LGBTQ actors or feature fictional queer characters. And to top off the evening, the Golden Globes will honor gay television writer and producer Ryan Murphy, perhaps best known for co-creating “Glee,” “Pose” and the “American Horror Story” franchise, with a lifetime achievement award. While this year’s pool of Golden Globe nominees ups the awards ceremony’s queer factor, many of the most anticipated wins involve seemingly straight actors playing queer characters. The Golden Globes airs on Jan. 10 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC and Peacock.
Miguel Sapochnik reportedly exited as co-showrunner of "House of the Dragon" over a dispute with HBO. HBO wouldn't let his wife, actress Alexis Raben, return as a producer for season two, Puck reported. Puck's Matthew Belloni reported in his latest "What I'm Hearing" newsletter that Sapochnik exited the role ahead of season two because HBO declined to let his wife, actress Alexis Raben, return to the producing team because of her "inexperience." Raben is credited as a producer on season one and also appeared in several episodes as Talya, a spy for Mysaria. HBO brought in a mediator to "deescalate" the situation, according to Belloni, but Sapochnik still decided to exit as co-showrunner after HBO rejected Raben.

I just finished streaming the latest season of “The White Lotus.” And “House of the Dragon,” “The Peripheral,” “The Crown,” “Andor,” “The Rings of Power” and too many more. What a change from May 1961, when Newton Minow , chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, called television a “vast wasteland.” Or 1992, when Bruce Springsteen sang “57 Channels (and Nothin’ On).”Many shows exist only because computer-generated imagery can create otherworldly landscapes and gravity-defying creatures. Like it or not, Silicon Valley owns Hollywood. Well, not literally, but clearly today’s Hollywood wouldn’t exist without Silicon Valley’s streaming technology and high-end graphics. As these two industries continue to merge, which will become more dominant driving society and culture?
In TV, the top 10 list ranges from the indefinable second season of “The White Lotus” to laugh-out-loud comedies and smoldering fantasy shows. “Catch the Fair One” is available on Hulu and various video-on-demand platforms. “Paris, 13th District” is available on Amazon Prime Video and various video-on-demand platforms. “Peter Von Kant” is available on various video-on-demand platforms. “Tár” is available on various video-on-demand platforms.
Sadly, “The Witcher: Blood Origin,” Netflix’s new spinoff, is a disappointment. Not that the original “Witcher” wholly depended on Cavill as its titular lead. “Blood Origin” is the first live-action spinoff, a prequel deep-dive that chronicles how witchers came to be. Unfortunately, “Blood Origin” doesn’t do much with its excellent pieces. “Blood Origin” just feels like a side quest, something that’s only worthwhile for superfans.
Here's NBC News' roundup of the 10 most notable memes of 2022. 'Dark Brandon'The meme, which started on Twitter in early 2022, depicts President Joe Biden as a laser-eyed edge-lord. 'Girl explaining'The "girl explaining" meme actually began going viral in 2019 in Spanish-speaking circles, according to Know Your Meme. Whether it's explaining what the Inflation Reduction Act is or why the Brooklyn Library is "fine free," the most shouty memes of 2022 were conveyed through the "girl explaining." That's because the corn kid, a 7-year-old named Tariq, became one of the year's most viral memes.
Ads are coming to HBO original series like "Game of Thrones" on HBO Max. Running ads alongside HBO originals could turn off viewers or possibly anger creators. HBO Max has kept commercials off its most prestigious programming — HBO originals series like "Mare of Easttown" and "Game of Thrones" (though ads appear in HBO Max originals like "The Flight Attendant" and "Hacks"). At the service's launch, Andy Forssell, then HBO Max EVP and GM, called the plan an effort to create an "elegant, tasteful ad experience that is respectful of great storytelling." With HBO Max, WBD is racing to make streaming profitable while slashing debt.
