But “The Eras Tour” heralds something new and potentially game-changing in the movie industry. BTS earlier this year released a concert film, with higher ticket prices and limited showtimes. But “The Eras Tour” could be the start of an expansion of what, exactly, a movie theater can be. The movie, directed by Sam Wrench, would be a way for millions more to experience the Eras Tour. “The industry needs it and, frankly, so do consumers.”Meanwhile, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” is poised to become the biggest concert film ever in about two days of release.

Writers Guild of America East members walk a picket line at the Paramount+ Summit outside the Paramount Building in Times Square in New York City on May 17, 2023The Writers Guild of America has officially ratified its new three-year contract with Hollywood studios. The guild on Monday announced that 99% of its membership voted to ratify the new deal, with 8,435 votes for "yes" and only 90 for "no." "Through solidarity and determination, we have ratified a contract with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of our combined membership," said Meredith Stiehm, president of Writers Guild of America West. The guild also negotiated higher contribution rates to health benefits and pensions, as well as a guaranteed number of writers in writers' rooms for television shows. "Until the studios make a deal that addresses the needs of performers, WGA members will be on the picket lines, walking side-by-side with SAG-AFTRA in solidarity," said Lisa Takeuchi Cullen, president of Writers Guild of America East.

Trying to maintain a career in Hollywood was "not something that was feasible for me to continue," this person told Insider. Insider spoke with eight current and former assistants at Hollywood companies, plus a former creative executive at a midsize film studio. Many hopefuls can't find jobs in an industry that's been wracked with head count reductions and budget cuts. Netflix's website lists just one open assistant job — a role in a non-creative vertical. At Paramount, which cut 25% of staff from its US cable networks earlier this year, there appear to be no open executive assistant jobs in entertainment capacities .

By 9 am ET, more than 75,000 Kaiser workers plan to join picket lines, marking the largest health care strike in US history. In the wake of pandemic, however, health care workers in particular have been fighting for safer and more secure work environments. Many health care employees are set to join the picket lines, including nursing staff, dietary workers, receptionists, optometrists, and pharmacists. Kaiser Permanente “members” pay dues to the organization to gain access to Kaiser Permanente’s wide-ranging health care services. The increased number of health care strikes have happened despite health care workers making up only about 9% of private sector union members nationwide.

CNN —Robin Williams’ daughter Zelda Williams says recreations of her late father made with artificial intelligence are “disturbing.”She took to Instagram on Sunday to explain her thoughts on AI, which is one of the key contract issues in the SAG-AFTRA strike against Hollywood studios. “I am not an impartial voice in SAG’s fight against AI,” Williams wrote. “I’ve witnessed for YEARS how many people want to train these models to create/recreate actors who cannot consent, like Dad. “I’ve already heard AI used to get his ‘voice’ to say whatever people want and while I find it personally disturbing, the ramifications go far beyond my own feelings. Now that the Hollywood writers' strike is over, late-night hosts are preparing their first opening monologues since May, and actors are going back to the negotiating table with studios. WGA membership is currently in the process of voting on the contract, with expectations that ratification will come late next week. Meyers, host of "Late Night with Seth Meyers," spent much of his pre-strike shows commenting on former President Donald Trump's compounding legal problems. The guild also negotiated higher contribution rates to health benefits and pensions, as well as a guaranteed number of writers in writers rooms for television shows. The actors guild begins its negotiations with the likes of Disney, Paramount, Universal and Warner Bros.

While the WGA settled its strike recently, winning improved wages and job protections, SAG-AFTRA remains on strike, and most filming remains on hold. They won a reported 32% increase in pay over the six-year life of a contract reached in June and ratified earlier this month. Many of the health care workers unions say their main issue is lack of adequate staffing and the workers’ belief that they’re not able to provide the level of care they want without more help. The Biden administration and Congress stepped into a labor dispute late last year when freight railroad workers threatened to strike. “Labor unions are enjoying a moment of high public approval and strong belief in the benefits they offer to workers, businesses and the economy,” said a Gallup statement.

SAG-AFTRA actors and Writers Guild of America (WGA) writers walk the picket line outside Disney Studios in Burbank, California, U.S., July 25, 2023. REUTERS/Mike Blake/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 27 (Reuters) - Hollywood studios and negotiators for Hollywood actors on strike will hold talks on Oct. 2, both side said in a joint statement on Wednesday, in the first such meeting in months. The SAG-AFTRA actors union, Hollywood's largest with 160,000 members, walked off the job in July asking for higher pay and for curbs on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in entertainment, demands similar to Hollywood writers. Other demands from actors include limits on self-taped auditions used in casting, which they argue are more costly than in-person readings. They also want hair and makeup artists who can work with various hair textures and skin tones, to ensure equity for all performers.

CNN —Striking actors and the Hollywood studios will resume negotiations on a new labor contract on Monday, SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, said Wednesday, the same day writers ended their own strike in the entertainment industry. Several executives from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers member companies will be attending the meetings, the union said. The writers and actors had been negotiating over many similar issues, such as compensation as streaming has changed the entertainment industry and the role of AI in creating movies and shows. SAG-AFTRA has been on strike since July 14, joining the fray a little more than two months after the writers strike began. Since then, the two unions have seemed to operate in lockstep with each other.

Sept 26 (Reuters) - Hollywood studios are expected to retain the right to train artificial-intelligence models based on writers' work under the terms of a tentative labor agreement between the two sides, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the situation. The writers would also walk away with an important win, a guarantee that they will receive credit and compensation for work they do on scripts, even if studios partially rely on AI tools, according to the report. Entertainment executives didn't want to relinquish the right to train their own AI tools based on TV and movie scripts, since their understanding is that AI tech platforms already are training their own models on such materials, the WSJ reported. The WGA, which represents roughly 11,500 film and television writers, reached a preliminary three-year deal with major studios on Sunday. Their demands are similar to that of writers, including higher wages and protection against AI use.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The deal is made, the pickets have been suspended, and Hollywood's writers are on the verge of getting back to work after months on strike. Crucial steps remain for the writers, who technically remain on strike, and for other workers awaiting a return to production of new shows. Following the approval from the boards — which is likely — comes a vote from the writers themselves, whose timing is uncertain. That could prompt a delay of Tuesday's voting and has kept union leaders from sharing with writers the details of what nearly five months of striking and hardship has earned them. ___For more on the writers and actors strikes, visit: https://apnews.com/hub/hollywood-strikes/

Slamming the tentative labor deal between Hollywood writers and studios, media mogul Barry Diller on Tuesday laid out his biggest bone of contention with generative artificial intelligence. "All we want to do is establish that there is no such thing as fair use for AI, which gives us standing." Generative AI and language-based model systems index entire bodies of work within their knowledge base, a violation of fair use, some argue. Altman, who also served on the Expedia board with Diller, testified before senators in May to discuss regulations on AI. Altman also said that Shutterstock was critical in the training of OpenAI's generative media AI, DALL-E.

Content production is back on the budget line for streaming services. They too want to share in the spoils of a successful movie or TV series on streaming services. The work stoppage isn’t officially over yet, and actors remain on strike. attained suggest that as organized labor enjoys a surge in popularity across a variety of industries, its muscle-flexing is achieving results. “We can say, with great pride, that this deal is exceptional,” the W.G.A. The tentative WGA deal increases pressure on SAG-AFTRA to reach an agreement along the same lines, although the actors union still has enough leverage to keep productions shut down. The studio’s resolution with WGA will likely pave the way for a deal with SAG-AFTRA within the next few weeks. The writers guild was going to fight the big fight, and the actors will use the gains writers made and customize them for their needs.”SAG-AFTRA has been on strike since July 14, joining the fray a little more than two months after the writers strike began. A major issue for the actors union is a wage increase of 11% in the first year of the proposed contract term, while the studios have only agreed to a 5% pay raise. According to Nunan, talks with the WGA will likely make studios more amenable to collaborative talks with SAG-AFTRA.

In what lasted for almost five months, the writer's strike has seemingly reached an end. In the last writers strike, in 2008, board members voted two days after a deal was reached, and members voted two days after that. The studios that make up the AMPTP opted to finish a deal with writers — who went on strike two months earlier — before even beginning to deal with actors. It was three months into the writers strike before the AMPTP reached out to begin negotiations, and the initial talks sputtered after a just a few days.

As for today's edition, we're looking at how AI could upend the job of the junior banker, and the effect that'll have on Wall Street's traditional career path. But this crucial piece of Wall Street's ecosystem could be upended by the rise of artificial intelligence.
