Stocks are up modestly in early trading Wednesday, but the usual signals of volume spikes and higher volatility are still not present. Yet here we are, with the 10-year at 4.55% yesterday and looking like it wants to get to 5.0% fast. Total equity volume yesterday was 10.4 billion shares, well below the September 2022 average of 11.4 billion, and 3% below the average level even for August, a vacation month. Modest volumes, relatively low volatility with prices down notably means there is no selling panic, but there is a buyer's strike in stocks. They need to see rates come down before they have confidence to buy stocks again."

Come September 30, some Americans may not see a paycheck or be able to visit parks. For everyday Americans, that could mean losing out on paychecks or childcare spots, and it could even worsen flight delays. The Social Security Administration, for instance, anticipates about 8,500 employees would be furloughed in a shutdown. Travel plans might be further disrupted as Transportation Security Administration workers and air-traffic controllers go without pay, the White House said. The White House has repeatedly said Republicans are bringing Americans this close to another government shutdown.

Inflation is on the rise again, but it may not be as bad for your wallet as it sounds. Here's what's happening: Driven by surging energy prices, the closely watched year-over-year inflation rate climbed from 3.2% to 3.7% in August, according to the Labor Bureau's latest consumer index report. That's still well above the Federal Reserve's target rate of 2%, so it remains a concern. However, the year-over-year rate should be taken with a grain of salt, as it no longer reflects the dramatic drop from peak prices in summer 2022. "The year-over-year numbers are pretty meaningless at this point," says Daniel Altman, chief economist at Instawork, an online staffing platform.

The entertainment giant last week announced a commemorative box set containing its most acclaimed animated films from its storied history. The Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection features 100 films — one for each year of the House of Mouse's century-long history. Next month, Disney will increase the price of its Disney+ streaming service, where many of these films can be found, to $13.99 per month. That means the new box set will cost the same as roughly nine years of ad-free Disney+, or more than 15 years of the ad-supported $7.99 per month plan. Also in the box is a lithograph poster of "Wish," the company's upcoming animated film which will commemorate its centennial anniversary.

It revolves around how Google pays partners to promote its search engine on their products. A law expert said the DOJ has a "pretty strong" case but has big hurdles to prove Google is liable. Much of the trial's outcome will be predicated on whether the deals Google made to promote its search engine excluded healthy competition. It's easy to switch your default search engine – we're long past the era of dial-up internet and CD-ROMs," Google's Walker said in a statement. It could also mirror a European Union decision to make Google give Android users a choice of search engine when they first set up their devices.

Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chair Lina Khan testifies before a House Judiciary Committee hearing on "Oversight of the Federal Trade Commission," on Capitol Hill in Washington, July 13, 2023. In Lina Khan's two years helming the Federal Trade Commission, her name has been most associated with one company: Amazon . So far, that's largely been because of her viral Yale Law Journal article from 2017, titled "Amazon's Antitrust Paradox." The article made Khan's name ubiquitous in antitrust circles and helped launch her on a path to becoming the youngest-ever FTC chair. That lawsuit is now expected to come as soon as this month, The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg reported this week.

A federal appeals court struck down the SEC's order denying the conversion of the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) into an exchange traded fund. The decision does not guarantee that investors will be able to freely trade a bitcoin ETF anytime soon, however. Another impact could be for the bitcoin futures ETFs that are already on the market, led by the $940 million ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) . Those funds could see outflows if investors choose the spot bitcoin products instead. Consider Valkyrie's attempt to change its bitcoin futures product into a broader crypto fund that also holds ether futures.

The company was riding a wave of growth in Europe's technology sector and snapping up competition from its mega U.S. rival PayPal. Since then, the company has weathered a turbulent ride, including a global pandemic that knocked volumes from travel clients significantly. Company shares plummeted 39% on Thursday, erasing 18 billion euros ($39 billion) from Adyen's market capitalization, as investors dumped the stock after the firm reported its slowest revenue growth on record. That means Netflix, which is the only streaming company making real money. There's been a race between the major media companies to acquire users over the past several years, something you could describe as the "Netflix effect." There used to be a few dominant media companies, then the internet and cell phones arrived, and there was a fresh wave of competition and innovation. There's a strong chance that we're now moving back to a world where there's a few dominant media companies, albeit in different industry structures. And arguably, these new dominant media companies are more powerful than the old dominant media companies.
