New York CNN —California is raising the minimum wage for fast food workers, marking a hard-won victory for those workers and union organizers. The state’s current minimum wage is $15.50 an hour and will increase to $16 an hour on January 1. The new hourly wage for fast food workers will take effect on April 1 of next year. In that period, only the council may set wages for fast food workers. “We are confident that what’s outlined is going to dramatically improve conditions for the state’s half million fast food workers,” Henry said.

He said: "For me, AGI…is the equivalent of a median human that you could hire as a co-worker." "It's interesting to use the term median human — that's importantly different from average human," Henry Shevlin, an AI ethicist and professor at the University of Cambridge, told Insider. How tech bros are defining this idea of median human intellect is open to question. Traditional measurements for comparing AI and human intelligence have tended to focus on capabilities rather than general intellect. But comparing AI with human intelligence at all can be ethically murky and potentially misleading, according to Mittelstadt.

There’s mischief in every Dahl story, and the voice of the writer is very strong. When I made “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and I was working on the script, we stayed at the house for some time. In those days, that writing hut was still filled with his things and left the way he had it. I remember there’s a portrait of Lucian Freud by Francis Bacon next to a portrait of Francis Bacon by Lucian Freud. McCarthy, though, has stopped short of committing to putting a Senate-passed short-term spending bill on the floor, knowing that doing so could mean a call for his ouster. During a call with the Republican conference Saturday afternoon, McCarthy pushed members to rally around a short-term spending bill that includes funds for border security. That would give House Republicans a position from which to begin negotiations with the Senate. It’s taking away leverage from House Republicans,” said GOP Rep. Garret Graves of Louisiana. But House Republicans marked their bills up at far lower levels after a rebellion from conservatives.

Gavin Newsom said Sunday that he plans to sign into law a pair of climate-focused bills intended to force major corporations to be more transparent about greenhouse gas emissions and the financial risks stemming from global warming. Newsom's announcement came during an out-of-state trip to New York’s Climate Week, where world leaders in business, politics and the arts are gathered to seek solutions for climate change. California lawmakers last week passed legislation requiring large businesses from oil and gas companies to retail giants to disclose their direct greenhouse gas emissions as well as those that come from activities like employee business travel. The goal is to increase transparency and nudge companies to evaluate how they can cut their carbon emissions. Newsom, a Democrat, said he wants California to lead the nation in addressing the climate crisis.

Gavin Newsom's office, also creates a nine-person council that will decide on future wage hikes for the fast-food industry in California through 2029. The deal will mean a wage floor of $20 for California workers at fast-food chains with at least 60 locations nationwide, starting April 1. The council will include four representatives from the fast-food industry, four from the workers' side and one neutral party who will serve as chair. But the fast-food industry was attacking the bill before it even made its way to Newsom's desk. Fast-food workers employed by affected restaurants will see pay increases of as much as 25% hit their paychecks starting in April.

Reading Sad Books Is Good for Your Kids

Last summer, my wife and I took our kids to Reader’s World, a wonderful bookstore in Holland, Mich. I watched my son and daughter head straight to the children’s section, where they began pulling down options and building small sand castles of books. Eventually Henry, our oldest, brought over a paperback I hadn’t heard of, a novel much thicker than the chapter books he usually read. He climbed into our bed and onto my chest, his small body shaking, his crying so intense he couldn’t speak. Finally, he managed a single sentence: “Dad, why did ‘The Wild Robot’ have to be sad?”

Actors went on strike in July, joining writers who had walked off the job in May, to demand that streaming sites and film studios improve their contracts and impose curbs on the use of artificial intelligence. SOLIDARITYVenice's artistic director Alberto Barbera had predicted that the actors of just three of the 23 films in competition would not be able to come to the festival because of the strike. No official reason was given, but one festival insider said she believed it was out of solidarity. Without their actors, the directors did most of the talking and were regularly quizzed about the dispute. Some of the actors who did make it to the festival wore T-shirts promoting the strike, as did the president of the main jury, Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle.

WASHINGTON, Aug 18 (Reuters) - The Biden administration has tightened controls on the export of materials and components for nuclear power plants to China, saying it would ensure the items were used only for peaceful purposes and not the proliferation of atomic weapons. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the federal agency responsible for nuclear energy safety, also requires exporters to get specific licenses to export special nuclear material and source material. That includes different types of uranium as well as deuterium, a hydrogen isotope that, in large amounts, could be used in reactors to make tritium, a nuclear weapons component. China opposes "putting geopolitical interests above nuclear non-proliferation efforts," he said. Two exports to China of the regulated nuclear materials occurred under a general license in the last year.

The committee's first hearing comes as the Biden administration takes a range of steps to root out junk fees, which the CFPB says includes credit card late fees, overdraft fees and surcharges on ticket purchases. Among other actions, the agency recently fined Bank of America $150 million for charging its customers multiple overdraft fees. In his testimony, Brian Johnson, managing director of financial regulatory consultancy Patomak Global Partners, said the CFPB "has been the most enthusiastic among regulators" in targeting junk fees. Democrats argued the power to target junk fees fits within the CFPB's core duties. "And let's not forget, these are the same banks that are bankrolling the attacks on the CFPB," Warren added.

Although many stars will miss the traditional red carpet openings for big studio productions, Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera still managed to attract a slew of top movies to the Lido.
