In 1924, historians and museum curators banded together to bury a time capsule inside the Liberty Memorial, to be opened in 100 years. In the 1920s, a group of prominent Kansas City residents formed the Liberty Memorial Association to construct a memorial dedicated to honor those who served in World War I. With the help of the Kansas City Police Department bomb and arson unit, the capsule was successfully opened with no explosions. The first of these artifacts was a tube of seeds representing the Kansas City agricultural community. The final object is a printing plate from the Kansas City Star dated to November 1, 1921.

Thailand's central bank unexpectedly cut its key interest rate at a policy review on Wednesday, a move long called for by the government as needed to revive a sluggish economy with inflation below target. The Bank of Thailand's monetary policy committee voted 5 to 2 to reduce the one-day repurchase rate by 25 basis points to 2.25%, after the rate had been a decade-high of 2.50% since September 2023. The previous change in policy was a 25 basis point rate rise in September last year. The World Bank has forecast the economy will grow 2.4% this year and 3.0% next year.

Celebrated New York City rapper and former firefighter Ka, whose real name was Kaseem Ryan, has died, according to his social media accounts. Additional disruptions from Hurricane Milton complicate the data collection for October's jobs report. To stimulate hiring, the Federal Reserve began cutting interest rates in September, and the jobs report will strongly inform its path forward. "I wouldn't expect these events to materially change how Americans view the economy before the election," DeAntonio said. For example, it noted in its release last week Hurricane Francine, which hit Louisiana in early September, "had no discernible effect" on the employment data it collected. Any effects from the hurricanes could lead to an October jobs report that shows a more pessimistic view of the economy than underlying conditions would suggest.

Scientists David Baker, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the award-giving body said on Wednesday, for work on the structure of proteins. The prize, widely regarded as among the most prestigious in the scientific world, is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and is worth 11 million Swedish crowns ($1.1 million). Half the prize was awarded to Baker “for computational protein design” while the other half was shared by Hassabis and Jumper “for protein structure prediction," the academy said. The third award to be handed out every year, the chemistry prize follows those for medicine and physics announced earlier this week. First handed out in 1901, 15 years after Nobel’s death, it is awarded for achievements in medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and peace.
