The nurse practitioner on duty that day was employed by Corizon Health, Inc., one of the nation's largest private prison healthcare providers. Under federal law, a bankruptcy judge may respond to evidence of self-dealing or perjury by appointing a trustee to take control of the bankrupt company, bankruptcy experts told Insider. Just six months before the Garcia family was scheduled to have their day in court, Corizon filed for bankruptcy. "The Corizon bankruptcy is presently in a court ordered mediation, and we are seeking a global resolution for all the parties involved." Despite his struggles on the campaign trail, Mr. DeSantis has become captain of a new conservative vanguard that views public schools and universities as the chief battleground of the culture wars — and his Florida education policies as a model for red states around the nation. Yet Mr. DeSantis is both a member of the ruling class and a critic of it. An examination by The New York Times reveals how Mr. DeSantis, genuinely embittered by his experiences at elite institutions, also astutely grasped how they could be useful to him. He now offers voters a revisionist history of his own encounters with the ruling class to buttress his arguments for razing it — and for remaking public education itself. Here are five takeaways from the Times article.

Ron DeSantis is a member of St. Elmo, a secret society he joined while a student at Yale University. A fellow member told The Times that DeSantis rolled his eyes when she told her life story to the group. DeSantis often speaks to GOP audiences about what he felt was an overly liberal environment at Yale. Cristina Sosa Noriega, a fellow member of St. Elmo, told The Times that DeSantis rolled his eyes when she spoke of her background as a Hispanic girl who was raised in San Antonio, Texas. Two additional members of the secret society also recounted DeSantis' expression at the time, according to The Times.

Complicating the matter for DeSantis: Trump, the front-runner in the race by far, appears unwilling to provide him with a target. Rival campaigns smell blood in the water as DeSantis has faced questions over profligate campaign spending and his readiness for the national stage. In the most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, released last week, Trump held 47% of the Republican vote nationally, with DeSantis dropping six points from July down to just 13%. Rick Santorum, a former U.S. senator and Republican presidential candidate who participated in a series of debates in the 2012 election, said DeSantis will need to be ready for an “onslaught” of attacks. “If I was on that stage, I would be going after Trump,” Santorum said.

Charles J. Ogletree Jr., a Harvard law professor who helped reframe debates around criminal justice, school desegregation and reparations during the 1990s and 2000s, all the while mentoring a new generation of Black lawyers that included President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, died on Friday at his home in Odenton, Md. Colette Phillips, a representative of the Ogletree family, said the cause was complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Professor Ogletree was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in 2015 and publicly announced his condition a year later. A son of California tenant farmers and the first in his family to graduate from high school, Professor Ogletree rose from poverty to become one of the most prominent civil rights lawyers in the country, leaving a mark on the courtroom and the classroom. As a litigator, he defended clients both famous and unknown, including Tupac Shakur and the survivors of the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, whom he helped to sue the city and the state of Oklahoma for restitution in 2003.

The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), the pork industry trade group, supports the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act, a bill introduced by U.S. Animal welfare groups say Proposition 12 is necessary because some sows and hens are housed in cages so small they cannot turn around. And he’s not just any former president – Trump’s the front-runner for the GOP nomination, whom polling shows is closely matched with President Joe Biden in a hypothetical rematch. “The lawlessness of these persecutions of President Trump and his supporters is reminiscent of Nazi Germany in the 1930s, and other authoritarian, dictatorial regimes,” it said. Trump’s congressional Republican backers ignored Smith’s evidence, branding the indictment an attempt to distract from questions they’ve raised about the business activities of the current president’s son, Hunter. The political inferno ignited by the indictment will raise questions about whether such an ordeal is truly in the national interest. Ron DeSantis stands to gain in the GOP primary from any eroding of Trump’s political prospects.

Ron DeSantis has sought to paint himself as a protector of middle-class values in the 2024 race. But Trump retains a huge 65% to 9% edge over DeSantis among GOP voters making under $50,000, per a new Times/Siena College poll. Even among GOP voters making over $100,000, which had previously been a brighter spot for DeSantis, he trailed Trump, albeit by a narrower 23 points (46%-23%). Overall, Trump retains a sizable edge in the GOP primary, with 54% selecting the former president as their top choice, followed by DeSantis at 17%. The Kidnapped Child Who Became a Poet

McCrae dropped out of high school and got an equivalency diploma. By 19, he was on his own, married, father of a daughter, but without a clear path forward, only a clear ambition to write poetry. I felt he had been beaten down by some great force — some injustice beyond the injustice of being Black in America. But these are just themes; every poet has them, and they say nothing about what might make verse notable, durable. It is McCrae’s own deep knowledge, and use, of the history of poetic form that has marked his work and made it, identifiably, his own.

The group includes Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Attorney General Merrick Garland, White House budget director Shalanda Young and Council of Economic Advisers chair Jared Bernstein. This year's bipartisan debt ceiling deal keeps fiscal 2024 spending flat at this year's levels, allowing a 1% increase for fiscal 2025. Consensual sex workers and advocates say the law, an addition to Section 230, makes them less safe. I was doing online work in the past and this feels more dangerous' or 'I've experienced assault' since it happened," Cleary told Insider. After FOSTA was passed, sex workers, advocates, and some anti-trafficking groups predicted this outcome, warning lawmakers that the overbroad law would lead to a chilling effect and reduced resources for consensual sex workers and trafficking victims. If this law has had an effect on rates of trafficking in the United States, it has evidently only increased the risks sex workers and trafficking survivors face." "As Bardot Smith has said, 'Sex workers are often the canaries in the coal mine,'" Kendra Albert, the cyberlaw clinic instructor at Harvard Law School, told WHYY.

We also show that formerly covered states were largely indistinguishable from formerly uncovered states in terms of retrogression. If anything, states unaffected by Shelby County retrogressed marginally more than did states impacted by the ruling. If changes in election laws, especially those affecting voter turnout, have little influence on partisan outcomes, why should the average citizen care about these developments? Conversely, even if the laws have only marginal influence on election outcomes, couldn’t that marginal difference become crucial in very close elections? We might think some changes to election laws are simply the right thing to do based on our ethical values.

Last week, Meta launched its latest social media venture, a Twitter alternative called Threads. For social media start-ups, attracting an audience is crucial to scaling a new product — but it can be near impossible to lure loyal users away from other platforms. New Threads accounts can easily migrate their information from Instagram, sharing their account data and username between the platforms. They have this pattern now of either launching or creating spin-off social media networks based on what's most popular at the time, then do it under their brand," Caraballo said. "It just is so dystopian to have one single person basically who oversees the entirety of all social media, at least in the Western world," Caraballo told Insider.

From zuck/InstagramFor years, celebrities from Kristen Bell and Gigi Hadid to Chris Pratt and Orlando Bloom have been blurring images or using emojis to help protect their kids’ privacy on social media. Zuckerberg, too, had previously posted pictures of the back of his daughters’ heads and their side profiles rather than showing their entire faces. Some parents choose to either restrict how much they share about their kids or limit sharing to less public platforms. Plunkett believes social media companies can do more, such as offering a setting that automatically blurs kids’ faces or prevents any picture with a child from being used for marketing or advertising purposes. For now, however, the onus remains on parents to limit or abstain sharing photos of their kids online.

The United States is home to an enormous array of animal industries — including industrial agriculture, fur farming and the exotic pet trade — that pose a significant risk of creating infectious disease outbreaks in humans, according to a new report by experts at Harvard Law School and New York University. Moreover, the nation “has no comprehensive strategy” to mitigate the dangers posed by these practices, many of which operate with little regulation and out of public view, the authors concluded. “The risk is staggering, because our use of animals is staggering,” said Ann Linder, the report’s lead author and an associate director at Harvard’s animal law and policy program. “And we don’t even really understand where that risk is.”Zoonotic diseases, or those that spread from animals to humans, account for roughly 60 percent of all known infectious diseases and 75 percent of new and emerging ones, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although the exact origins of the Covid-19 pandemic remain murky, the possibility that the coronavirus might have first jumped into humans at a live animal market in Wuhan, China, prompted calls to shut down these so-called wet markets, especially in Asia.

On Friday, the Supreme Court decided in a 6-3 ruling that Biden's plan to cancel up to $20,000 in student debt cannot move forward. The majority ruled that the states had standing to involve MOHELA in their case, and the law Biden used to cancel student debt demonstrated an overreach of authority. "I believe that the Court's decision to strike down our student debt relief plan is wrong," he added. "Despite this legally unsound Supreme Court decision, the President has the clear authority under the Higher Education Act of 1965 to cancel student debt. "The President has additional legal tools to cancel student debt — and he should use them.

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday to end race-based affirmative action in college admissions. The Obamas each released a statement reflecting on the role affirmative action has played. Barack Obama wrote that it had allowed students like him and Michelle "to prove we belonged." "Like any policy, affirmative action wasn't perfect," Barack Obama, who attended Columbia University and Harvard Law School, wrote. But still, I sometimes wondered if people thought I got there because of affirmative action.

For just as long, critics of affirmative action have questioned whether race-conscious admissions policies are fair or warranted. The Supreme Court weighed in on Thursday, striking down affirmative action policies at Harvard and the University of North Carolina. In 2014, he founded Students for Fair Admissions, the group behind several major Supreme Court challenges to affirmative action - including the cases that led to Thursday's decision. Connerly persuaded his fellow regents to ban affirmative action. He concluded that affirmative action as part of an approach that aimed to remedy historic disadvantages and did not favor unqualified applicants over qualified ones could still be used.
