Ketchup inflation hits your weekend barbecue

New York CNN —Planning on squirting some ketchup on your hot dog at a barbecue this weekend? Though shoppers have been starting to see some relief in the grocery aisle, food inflation has been consistently outpacing overall inflation. Ketchup prices are piling up. Stefani Reynolds/AFP/Getty ImagesIn the year through April, grocery prices jumped 7.1%, according to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index. NIQ’s own data shows that in the week through April 30, ketchup prices were up about 14% year-over-year.

They took Shake Shack public in 2015 with 63 restaurants and have expanded to 436 restaurants in eight years. As a public company, Shake Shack has significantly underperformed both the market and its peers.
Are the travails of the bond market, like Macbeth expounds, a "tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing?" The billionaire class — so incorrectly sought after by the media — so often seems to use the bond market as a sort of intellectual cudgel. That's why I always start my discussion on bonds with the simple query of "where are the layoffs, not forget about stocks, think fixed income." Here the bond market polices only those companies that haven't pivoted to making a profit. They, among all sectors, could be pummeled by the bond market freeze and by the consumers' paralysis.
New York CNN —Mother’s Day is one of the busiest days for the American restaurant industry, presenting a massive operational challenge to restaurants. In fact, if I die and go to hell, I completely expect it to be Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day presents “an operational challenge,” said Shawn Walchef, owner of five Cali BBQ eateries in the San Diego area. “Your Mother’s Day meal can’t be obnoxiously expensive,” said Derek Axelrod, co-owner of Manhattan’s Upper East Side T bar restaurant. Their Mother’s Day menu will likely be upwards of $100 person, but won’t turn much of a profit, he said.
The cruise ship MSC Seaside failed its CDC's sanitation inspection on April 27, records show. The vessel received a 67 out of 100 — the lowest score a cruise ship has received in five years. The cruise ship MSC Seaside failed the CDC's vessel sanitation inspection at the end of April with an unusually low score. The vessel received 67 out of 100 points, nearly twenty points below the agency's passing grade. In the past 10 years, only three other cruise ships have received sanitation scores below 70, CDC records show.

Restaurant Brands International on Tuesday reported quarterly earnings and revenue that topped analysts' expectations, fueled by double-digit same-store sales growth at Tim Hortons and Burger King. The company's same-store sales grew 10.3% in the quarter, fueled by double-digit growth at Burger King and Tim Hortons. In Canada, its home market, it reported same-store sales growth of 15.5%. Firehouse Subs, the latest addition to Restaurant Brands' portfolio, saw its same-store sales rise 6.1% in the quarter.
The app will also designate restaurants that keep prices the same, Restaurant Business reported. Restaurants have tried to make delivery more profitable, but delivery services have pushed back. DoorDash is also adding a specification on its app when a restaurant's prices are the same through DoorDash and in-person, according to Restaurant Business. We understand that there may be many reasons why restaurants choose to raise their prices, but in our mission to improve the customer and merchant experience, we encourage restaurants to set prices on DoorDash that more closely reflect in-store menu prices." Restaurants have often raised prices on orders made through DoorDash and other delivery services to reclaim some of what they pay in commissions to these apps.
The man, Erick Aguirre, 29, was arrested on Tuesday in Aransas County, north of Corpus Christi, Texas, and charged with murder in the death of Elliot Nix, 46, on April 11. Brent Mayr, a lawyer for Mr. Aguirre, declined to comment on Friday. According to a charging document, Mr. Aguirre was going out to eat on April 11 with Melanie Castillo, who said in a voluntary statement that she and Mr. Aguirre were dating. They drove separately to Rodeo Goat, a hamburger restaurant east of downtown Houston. Mr. Aguirre paid the man, and the couple went to Rodeo Goat.
The McDonald’s app had 127 million downloads worldwide last year—almost four times as many as the next-closest industry competitor. There are some equally mind-boggling figures surrounding the chain today, and not just in its pleasing first-quarter earnings report released Tuesday morning. Its sheer heft as the world’s largest restaurant chain, along with a good dose of digital savvy, has helped expand its lead over fast-food rivals. Consider, for example, that there were 127 million downloads worldwide of the chain’s app last year, according to Apptopia. Even in the fast food-happy United States, downloads last year numbered as many as the second, third and fourth competing app combined.
All three of its divisions reported same-store sales growth of 12.6%. In its home market, higher menu prices and increased traffic fueled same-store sales growth, which topped StreetAccount estimates of 7.9%. McDonald's U.S. traffic rose for the third consecutive quarter, bucking the industry trend of slipping traffic as menu prices rise. Its international operated markets, which include the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Australia, beat StreetAccount estimates of 8.5% same-store sales growth. Its international developmental licensed markets segment, which includes China and Japan, topped same-store sales expectations of 10.5%.
McDonald's is cooking up a series of upgrades for its most iconic burgers. The fast food giant announced this week that it would be making "small but tasty improvements" to the Big Mac, McDouble, cheeseburger, double cheeseburger and hamburger. Though the ingredients for all the burgers will largely remain the same, McDonald's says that changes to the preparation of its sandwiches will improve the quality of the finished product. McDonald's promises that its buns will be "softer" and more "pillowy" than its existing offerings. The grilling process is being modified to get a better sear on each burger patty, and the chain will make unspecified "tweaks" to its burger assembly process "to get hotter, meltier cheese."

New York CNN —McDonald’s, which has been focusing on upgrading its core items to boost sales, is rolling out a series of changes designed to improve its signature burgers. The Big Mac will come with more Big Mac sauce. “In an environment where our customers are looking for the simple and familiar, our core menu items have never been more relevant,” he said. McDonald's USAFocusing on promoting its core menu items, rather than introducing new products, is a way to keep processes simpler and reduce friction in the kitchen. “Throughout 2022, some of our most successful campaign platforms brought our customers closer to the core menu items,” Kempczinski said during the January call.

A contraction in beef supplies “has been coming for a while,” said David Anderson, a professor in Texas A&M University’s agricultural economics department. Beef supplies are shrinking after farmers sold off cattle in response to drought and high costs. The “big unknown is going to be consumer demand.”The beef supply tends to grow and shrink in roughly 10-year cycles, said Lance Zimmerman, senior beef analyst for the North American market with Rabobank. “If that’s the case, beef prices may be steadier.”And with food inflation stubbornly high, consumers are already cutting back on certain items, including beef. If demand remains strong, “we may see some higher beef prices,” towards the fall and later, Bernt said.
Trump arrived via motorcade at 100 Centre Street, a towering, 1940s-era building faced in limestone, granite, and decades of grime. It's the DA investigators who "book" Trump, a process that begins with the former president emptying his pockets. Prints are run on anyone arrested in New York, and Trump will be no different. No one will check if Trump fibsThe DA investigators will also take Trump's pedigree information — name, date of birth, address, phone number, that sort of thing. "There's a cell in the processing area in the DA investigators' offices," she said.
My friends, take a long look at the teams in this year’s men’s college basketball Final Four, because there has never been a final foursome like it before, and there will almost surely never be again:Hamburger University Harvard Business School The Sorbonne DukeOK, fine, I’m kidding, those aren’t really the four schools—the field is actually (for realsies) Florida Atlantic, Miami, San Diego State and something called the University of Connecticut—but it still represents a radical departure from the March Madness norm.
Arby’s Co-Founder Leroy Raffel Dies at Age 96

Leroy Raffel and his brother Forrest, in glasses, bet that people would pay 69 cents for a roast-beef sandwich in 1964. Leroy Raffel , a co-founder of the Arby’s restaurant chain who teamed up with his older brother Forrest Raffel in 1964 to take on McDonald’s and other hamburger chains with a much pricier roast-beef sandwich, died Tuesday at the age of 96. The Raffel brothers ran a supplier of restaurant equipment in Youngstown, Ohio, in the early 1960s. They saw that many of their customers, independent local eateries, were imperiled by the rise of national chains, some of which were then offering hamburgers for around 15 cents, the current equivalent of about $1.45.

Burger King used to be the second-largest U.S. hamburger chain. Burger King owner Restaurant Brands International Inc. named a new chief executive Tuesday, saying the company needs to do more to help its restaurant owners improve their profits. The Toronto-based fast-food chain operator said Joshua Kobza , the company’s chief operating officer, will take over as CEO March 1. Mr. Kobza previously served as Restaurant Brands’ chief financial officer and chief technology officer in his 11 years with the company.

Its flagship burger chain, Burger King, saw same-store sales growth of 8.4% during the period. At the end of the fourth quarter, the company said it had funded $30 million of that turnaround plan.

Cheeseburger and friesA bean burger is a good alternative to a hamburger. Shutterstock/TriffIf you love a cheeseburger and fries, you can add a Mediterranean diet twist by grilling instead of frying the burger patty, using a small amount of cheese, adding lettuce and tomato, and using a wholemeal bun, dietitian Kirsten Jackson told Insider. Instead of fries, serve alongside a side salad or oven-baked potato wedges cooked in olive oil. Another option would be a bean burger or grilled salmon burger, she said.
To help with the process, here are five stocks chosen by Wall Street's top analysts, according to TipRanks, a platform that ranks analysts based on their past performances. Nonetheless, Monness Crespi Hardt analyst Brian White expects the results to be in line with, or marginally above, Street expectations. Looking ahead, White sees pent-up demand for iPhones come into play in the forthcoming quarters, once Apple overcomes the production snags. (See Spotify Stock Chart on TipRanks) White is particularly upbeat about the waning mobile app store monopolies, after the European Union passed the Digital Markets Act last year.
