New technology, however, using drones, artificial intelligence and weather balloons aims to modernize and accelerate that process. Near Space Labs, a Brooklyn, New York-based startup, invented "Swifts," or stratospheric, AI-enabled robotic cameras that fly on weather balloons. The giant weather balloons fly twice as high as airplanes cruise. Insurance and reinsurance companies, like Swiss Re, are using Near Space to help them understand and price risk. In addition to Third Sphere, Near Space Labs is backed by Crosslink Capital, Wireframe Ventures, IAG Firemark Ventures, Toyota Ventures and Leadout Capital.

Currently, the jobless in North Carolina can only receive up to 12 weeks of state unemployment benefits, among the skimpiest in the nation. (Applicants must first exhaust their state unemployment benefits.) Plus, disaster jobless benefits are available to many types of workers who don’t qualify for state unemployment insurance, such as gig workers, farmers and the self-employed. Still, it can be difficult for the newly jobless to secure either state or disaster unemployment benefits, particularly those whose homes and businesses have been heavily damaged or destroyed by storms. It took Miranda Escalante five days to apply for unemployment assistance.

Wiley’s coalition, representing more than 200 civil rights interest groups and other organizations, wants companies like Elon Musk’s X and Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta to more clearly separate fact from fiction. “Social media companies should be vigilant,” Wiley said, observing that information platforms don’t have to be overwhelmingly polluted. The Leadership Conference’s Center for Civil Rights and Technology decided to speak out after social networks were swamped with lies about Hurricanes Helene and Milton earlier this fall. In 2017, Hurricane Maria damaged three IV fluid manufacturing plants in Puerto Rico, also operated by Baxter, which led to a shortage. “Although this particular shortage on these particular IV fluids is not something we’ve encountered,” DeRienzo said. Along with IV fluids, the North Carolina Baxter facility also made specialty fluids, such as peritoneal dialysis fluid as well as irrigation fluids, used to clean wounds. Ganio said those measures won’t solve the ongoing IV fluid shortage problems long term. “The IV fluids are kind of a good example of the chronic shortages,” he said.

This ability to get electricity from one part of the country to another is ever more important as America’s grid is lashed by increasingly extreme weather. Extreme weather isn’t the only reason the grid needs to expand. “We run a VHS grid for a Hulu economy.”America’s grid is actually three grids: the Eastern and Western interconnections, plus the independent Texas grid. The physical electrical lines connecting all of the systems are fragile and outdated, experts told CNN. Clements cautioned that even a bigger grid can’t solve all the challenges posed by climate change-fueled extreme weather.

Travelers reported a nearly three-fold jump in third-quarter profit on Thursday, as higher underwriting gains and investment income more than offset steep catastrophe losses. Travelers' net written premiums rose 8% in the quarter from a year earlier, as all its units grew, the company said. Underwriting gains climbed to $685 million compared with a loss of $136 million a year earlier, while net investment income rose nearly 18%, thanks to strong fixed income returns and growth in fixed maturity investments. The euphoria has also spread to other asset classes, bolstering gains across investment portfolios. Travelers' underlying combined ratio improved to 85.6%, compared with 90.6% a year earlier.

New York CNN —Losses from Hurricane Milton could reach as high as $34 billion, according to an early estimate of both flood and wind damage from research firm CoreLogic, with between $4 billion to $6 billion of those losses being uninsured flood damage. Most insured flood damage is covered by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Homeowners who live in areas at high risk of flooding are often required by their mortgage lender to have flood insurance. The Milton losses will likely total far below CoreLogic’s estimated losses of up to $47.5 billion from Hurricane Helene, which came only two weeks before Milton. The lower end of the insured losses estimate from CoreLogic would be $17 billion, with $13 billion of wind damage covered by homeowners and business insurance , and $4 billion of insured flood losses.

Will the economies in hard-hit areas like Asheville and Tampa ever fully recover from the hurricanes? Economic activity plunged in the immediate months following Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Hurricane Harvey in Houston and Hurricane Irma in Columbia, South Carolina. But within one year after those hurricanes, among the costliest in the US in the last 20 years, economic activity rebounded to levels similar to or greater than before the hurricanes.
