During another busy week of earnings and stock market swings, we picked our spots and made six trades, including calling up a Bullpen name. We also changed two Club price targets. Shortly after the opening bell, we trimmed some Caterpillar and booked some profits after the industrial giant's blowout earnings last week. Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust — the holdings we use for the Club — owns 315 shares of Caterpillar. Meanwhile, S & P 500 companies are spending more and more on capital expenditures (CapEx). Certainly, some companies execute wise buybacks, while others are not as ideal. Humana repurchased $529 million worth of common stock in the second quarter, after spending only $4 million in the year-ago period. Of course, companies also must consider their spending on buybacks versus investments back in the business in order to support growth, such as new manufacturing equipment or data centers. But less spending on buybacks is not necessarily something to worry about.

Following the success of the Barbie DreamHouse, Airbnb is renting out the home of another famous blonde. Later this month, users of the platform will have a chance to apply to stay in Gwyneth Paltrow's guesthouse in Montecito, Calif. The one-night stay is a promotion for the "Shallow Hal" star's Goop wellness brand, and promises to give Paltrow's guests "favorite Goop essentials to nourish your body, mind and soul." The listing, which is written in the first person, describes the Montecito property as Paltrow's "sanctuary for respite and mental clarity." Unlike the Barbie DreamHouse promotion, guests at Paltrow's home will get to meet their famous host in person.

Patty’s maternal relationships with Cecile and Sammy are the play’s sources of conflict (Patty’s offstage husband, Hal, we’re told, is “fine”). The matriarch is little more than an amalgam of stereotypes; that there is truth to them is hardly a revelation. But the play does little to question or disrupt the preconceived notions it assumes New York audiences will have about “an Upper West Side lady” like Patty. If this is a character study, Patty’s pungent, messy center is largely withheld from view. Unfortunately, Cecile is kept at arm’s length from a story in which she seems to have the most compelling inner life.

A long-awaited rally in crude oil prices has helped the Club's three oil-and-gas companies become some of our top-performing stocks over the past month. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, and West Texas Intermediate crude, the U.S. oil standard, have both climbed by more than 10% since late June. Energy stocks linked to crude — including Club names Halliburton (HAL), Coterra Energy (CTRA) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) — have risen on oil's fortunes. U.S. producers also have shown restraint, Kumar told CNBC, with domestic crude production hovering around 12.3 million barrels per day all year . Moreover, a year-over-year drop in U.S. rig counts points to "a bit of a decline in oil production" down the road, Kumar said.

Commentary on the results Almost all calls begin with a discussion of the reported results. The reported quarter ended May 31 and the call was hosted on June 30, a full month after the quarter ended. By listening into the call, an investor could see that the reported results did not tell the full story around Wynn's business in China. As with the reported results, any comments on supply chains and customer dynamics could prove relevant to the direction of the stock. It can be quantitative, by which management provides actual targets for sales, earnings, and/or industry metrics.

July 21 (Reuters) - U.S. energy firms this week reduced the number of oil and natural gas rigs operating for a second week in a row, including the deepest oil rig cut since early June, energy services firm Baker Hughes (BKR.O) said in its closely followed report on Friday. U.S. oil rigs fell by seven to 530 this week, their lowest since March 2022, while gas rigs dropped by two to 131. Baker Hughes said drillers cut four rigs in the Permian in West Texas and eastern New Mexico, the nation's biggest shale oil formation, bringing the total down to 333 rigs. They also cut two rigs in the Eagle Ford bringing the total in that South Texas shale basin down to 57 rigs. U.S. shale oil and gas production will fall in August for the first time since December, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said in its monthly Drilling Productivity Report this week.

North America revenue for the current quarter will be slightly down, Chief Executive Olivier Le Peuch said in a post-earnings conference call with analysts, saying activity in the region was moderating. However, the company expects third quarter revenue from international markets to grow by a mid-single digit percentage, citing a resurgence in offshore and Middle East drilling. In comparison, last quarter's international revenue rose 21% to $6.3 billion and North America's climbed 14% to $1.75 billion. Analysts at Tudor Pickering Holt noted that international revenue missed its estimate by $1 billion, while North America slightly topped its forecast. Revenue of $8.1 billion fell slightly below analysts' estimate of $8.2 billion.

REUTERS/Richard Carson/File PhotoJuly 19 (Reuters) - Halliburton Co (HAL.N) and Baker Hughes (BKR.O) beat analysts' estimates for second-quarter profit on Wednesday on the back of strong demand for oilfield services internationally, even as domestic activity stumbled. On the call, management reiterated that growing free cash flow is a top priority, and they expect over 50% of it to be "returned to shareholders this year." Speaking of cash returns, the company repurchased $248 million worth of shares during the quarter while returning another $144 million to shareholders via dividends. The team also guided for full-year free cash flow generation to be above what analysts were looking for — a material positive for the stock in the back half of the year. While maintaining our 2 rating , we're nudging up our price target to $42 per share from $40), reflecting about 18 times 2024 free cash flow per share estimates or about 11.5 times 2024 earnings estimates. With 2022 free cash flow coming in at $1.43 million, this forecast amounts to about $1.93 million at the midpoint, above Wall Street's $1.84 million expectation.

"High level, we want this to become something like your personal AI friend," said developer Div Garg, whose company MultiOn is beta-testing an AI agent. The race towards increasingly autonomous AI agents has been supercharged by the March release of GPT-4 by developer OpenAI, a powerful upgrade of the model behind ChatGPT - the chatbot that became a sensation when released last November. GPT-4 facilitates the type of strategic and adaptable thinking required to navigate the unpredictable real world, said Vivian Cheng, an investor at venture capital firm CRV who has a focus on AI agents. OpenAI itself is very interested in AI agent technology, according to four people briefed on its plans. There are at least 100 serious projects working to commercialize agents, said Matt Schlicht, who writes a newsletter on AI.

Here's a rapid-fire update on all 35 stocks in Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust, the portfolio we use for the CNBC Investing Club. Coterra Energy (CTRA): At roughly 10 times forward earnings, Jim said he'd classify Coterra shares as dirt cheap. Estee Lauder (EL): We're downgrading Estee Lauder to a 2 rating Wednesday, meaning we're no longer recommending investors buy the stock at current levels. But we're sticking with Estee Lauder because eventually we expect China's economy to turn around, and with it EL's stock price. Here's a closer look at the Club's best and worst performers in the first half of 2023, starting with the four winningest stocks. A decision Monday by Saudi Arabia and Russia, the world's largest oil exporters, to cut production in an effort to push up oil prices is a bullish development for the Club's struggling energy holdings. Oil prices edged up Monday, with West Texas Intermediate crude — the U.S. oil benchmark — rising by 0.28%, to just under $71 a barrel. In this uncertain economic environment, the U.S. has repeatedly made clear its desire to keep oil prices lower. But if energy prices were to remain relatively suppressed, we would expect the year-to-date winners to continue their march higher, benefiting from more affordable oil prices.
