When you're doing a job interview, whether virtual or in person, you'll want to follow the appropriate etiquette. Here are Levine's best tips for avoiding her top red flags in a job interview. But "if you show up too early, it's also too eager and might make the interviewer feel rushed," says Levine. "I recommend making sure that you are parked 15 to 20 minutes early in the building" as a precaution, says Levine. If you're online or in person, "don't chew gum, don't have your sunglasses on your head" during the interview, says Levine.

Morris, like thousands of other customers, was snared in the collapse of a behind-the-scenes fintech firm called Synapse and has been locked out of her account for six months as of November. Then she learned how much Evolve Bank & Trust, the lender where her funds were supposed to be held, was prepared to return to her. The crisis started in May when a dispute between Synapse and Evolve Bank over customer balances boiled over and the fintech middleman turned off access to a key system used to process transactions. Synapse helped fintech startups like Yotta and Juno, which are not banks, offer checking accounts and debit cards by hooking them up with small lenders like Evolve. But that would've required more coordination between Evolve and the other lenders that held customer funds than what ultimately happened.

Why the U.S. is growing less food

Fruit production is down nearly 36% in 2024 from 2003, while vegetable production is down 6.3%, according to the USDA. Imports make up a growing share of fresh produce availability, with 60% of the total fruits and 38% of vegetables in the U.S. supplied by other countries in 2021, with Mexico as the largest supplier. The U.S. prioritizes growing commodities — like corn, soybeans, wheat and sugar. And that's a big sticking point for many small to midsize farmers growing fruits and vegetables. The 2018 farm bill extended into 2024 but expired in September.

It is very unusual for Chinese businesspeople to take public aim at the government and those who have done so have often faced repercussions. In particular, Pinduoduo’s pricing system has done great harm to China’s brands and its industries,” he was quoted as saying by state-owned media outlet The Paper. In further remarks from the same press conference that were not widely reported by state media, Zhong singled out the Chinese government for not doing more to stop the trend. Owning overcrowded stocks could increase volatility and lead to muted portfolio gains, according to Morgan Stanley. "Crowded trades come with the risk of overvaluation and increased volatility as it may be more difficult to attract the marginal investor, while avoiding overcrowded stocks can provide investors with an opportunity to capture unrecognized value when paired with strong fundamentals," Morgan Stanley strategists said in a note to clients. Car rental agency Avis Budget Group was the most crowded stock among hedge funds, with more than half its float owned by professional traders. Aerospace and defense company Loar Holdings and real estate development and management firm Howard Hughes were also on the list of crowded trades. Spain's Ministry of Consumer Rights on Friday slapped a $179 million euro ($186 million) fine on five low-budget airlines for "abusive practices" including charging additional cabin luggage fees. Spanish low-cost airline Vueling was ordered to pay 39.2 million euros and EasyJet was fined 29 million euros. Scandinavia's second-largest airline Norwegian and Spanish airline Volotea each received penalties in excess of 1 million euros. The five airlines should discontinue their practice of requiring additional payment for cabin luggage and reserving a seat near a dependent traveler, the ministry said. "We completely disagree with the decision of the Spanish Consumer Ministry and find the proposed sanctions outrageous," an EasyJet statement said, stressing it considers its cabin luggage policy to be aligned with all applicable laws.

Carpenter Technology has multiple avenues of growth over the next few years, according to JPMorgan. Analyst Bennett Moore initiated coverage of the U.S.-based stainless steel and alloys manufacturer with an overweight rating and a price target of $220. "Shares have rallied ... on the back of strong demand, solid execution, and an attractive earnings outlook, and we feel the company is well positioned to capture further upside," Moore said in a Thursday note. Moore's investment thesis is built on the company's robust demand for its mostly customer-specific premium products, which he said gives Carpenter strong pricing power and supported its position as an "indispensable supplier." Barack Obama was elected president, and the mood in the Republican Party picked up on the mood you’ve already described. But in the end, what he did electorally was not in that election to build the pan ethnic working class Republican Party. But at the very least, there was the conventional wisdom was that the Republican Party had to move substantially to the left on immigration. I just think that if the Republican Party is not the party of private property and wealth building, so I don’t think. Is there any chance that the Republican Party is about to not be the party of private property and wealth building No, no, I think you’re right.

To examine the issue of human smuggling, De León spent seven years closely studying the lives of men dedicated to smuggling migrants from Central America and Mexico into the U.S. The result was his nonfiction book, “Soldiers and Kings: Survival and Hope in the World of Human Smuggling," which on Wednesday garnered De León the prestigious National Book Award for nonfiction. While De León interviewed countless migrants and smugglers, his book focuses on the journeys of nearly half a dozen people from Honduras, Mexico and elsewhere. That’s talking about smugglers, talking about the political economy of undocumented migration — and people don’t want that. Despite his years of experience, De León said he learned new lessons while working on the award-winning book.

Some major tech companies including Meta are taking steps to combat “pig butchering” scams, which trick Americans out of billions of dollars each year through fake online friendships and romances. Pig butchering scams are elaborate and often take months to unfold. Meta on Thursday announced it has taken its first major steps into addressing the scams, including dedicating staff to identify where scammers operate, sharing that information with international law enforcement, and taking down more than 2 million accounts this year. The announcement reflects how more tech companies are recognizing the severity of pig butchering scams. Calling themselves the Tech Against Scams coalition, the companies pledged to share scammer information with each other and better educate users.

If Steel wins, that number would be 151, the same number of women serving in Congress on Election Day, and the first stall in progress since 2016, when President-elect Donald Trump won his first term. Both scenarios mean the number of women in the next Congress will also fall short of the current record of 152 women, following Texas Democratic Rep. Erica Lee Carter’s special election win this month. Senate Republican women will also meet their current record, with nine in the chamber. The number of House Republican women will decrease because of some losses and retirements, falling from 34 in the current Congress to 31 or 32, depending on Steel and Miller-Meeks’ races. After Trump’s first election in 2016, Democrats did see a surge in women running for Congress in 2018, and a wave of Republican women stepped up to run two years later in 2020.
