American Water , the largest water utility in the U.S., disclosed that it had been hit by a cyberattack. Hacks targeting U.S. water infrastructure, in particular, have been increasing, with some of the attacks linked to geopolitical rivals of the U.S., including Iran, Russia and China. "All drinking water and wastewater systems are at risk — large and small, urban and rural," an EPA spokesman recently told CNBC. American Water provides drinking water and wastewater services to more than 14 million people with regulated operations in 14 states and on 18 military installations. It said turning off customer systems was intended to protect data, though it added that it is too soon to know whether any customer information is at risk.

"Modern Hydrogen produces clean hydrogen without renewable power. We can do this because we split apart natural gas into clean hydrogen and solid carbon," said Tony Pan, CEO of Modern Hydrogen. Natural gas is a cleaner fuel than oil, but it still emits harmful carbon dioxide when burned. In a Tuesday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Aaron Jagdfeld, CEO of generator company Generac , warned that the pressure on the power grid is only going to increase, burdened by a massive crop of new data centers and more severe weather. Although the U.S. is adding more solar and wind power, Jagdfeld noted that these sources are "intermittent by their nature," and the increased demand for technology like artificial intelligence and electric vehicles will continue to weigh on the grid. Another deadly storm, Milton, hit Category 5 status on Tuesday and is predicted to ravage Florida's Tampa Bay region on Wednesday. I mean, the air temperatures are warming, the water temperatures are warming," Jagdfeld said. "We can debate what caused it, but I think the reality of it is the, the outcome is more extreme weather."

The company started buying Nvidia GPUs in 2021, getting to the AI cloud computing business earlier than most. CEO J.J. Kardwell describes the company as the largest privately-held cloud computing platform in the world. It also makes the Vultr boss well-positioned to explain a phrase frequently on the lips of AI luminaries like Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang: sovereign AI. Sovereign cloud is the delivery of cloud infrastructure as a service, typically inside a country. BI: AI computing is extremely energy intensive, and concerns about the US grid abound.

TSMC has high power usage, and Taiwan's tight electricity supply will test its chip production. TSMC aims for net zero emissions by 2050, but renewable energy growth faces hurdles. The surge in energy consumption last year is likely due to the increase in 3nm semiconductor production, the analysts said. In 2021, TSMC announced a commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050 through a combination of renewable energy certificates and power purchase agreements. Adding renewable energy supplies would help alleviate this problem, although the island's geography makes it difficult to increase solar and wind power sources.

Scientists grow mystery tree from 1,000-year-old seed

But it doesn’t mean that scientists aren’t interested in bringing the past back to life in some form. Dig thisThe tree, which the study authors believe may have a biblical connection, is seen at 12 years old. Remarkably, the tree thrived and now stands 10 feet (3 meters) tall, although it has never flowered or produced fruit. Using DNA sequencing, the researchers identified the mystery tree as part of the Commiphora genus, but its exact species is unknown and likely extinct. Scientists aim to extract DNA from the remains to learn more about those buried there and whether they were related.

Google could one day use nuclear energy to power its AI data centers. Competitors like Amazon and Microsoft are turning to nuclear energy to power their data centers too. AdvertisementIf Google CEO Sundar Pichai's hints on Thursday are any indicator, nuclear energy may one day power some of Google's energy-hungry AI data centers. To be sure, this isn't the first time Google has expressed interest in clean energy alternatives like nuclear energy. In March, Amazon inked a $650 million deal to buy electricity from the Susquehanna nuclear power station, per the Financial Times.

A Hawaiian Electric power line fell early on the morning of Aug. 8, sparking a fire in overgrown brush near the edge of town. Pictures and crosses are displayed at a public hillside memorial to Lahaina wildfire victims on August 1, 2024 in Lahaina, Hawaii. First responders also had trouble getting a firm answer from Hawaiian Electric representatives if the power had been cut to the area. That’s the amount the defendants — including Hawaiian Electric, the state, Maui County, large landowners and others — have agreed to pay to settle claims. Lawyers for people seeking compensation fear allowing insurance companies to sue Hawaiian Electric and others will subvert the deal, drain what is available to pay fire victims and lead to prolonged litigation.

CNN —Archaeologists in Denmark have unearthed more than 50 “exceptionally well preserved” skeletons in a large Viking-era burial ground in the east of the country. The skeletons were buried alongside artifacts from far beyond Denmark’s borders, suggesting Vikings traveled extensively for trade, according to the team from the museum. The conditions at the site are what helped keep the skeletons in such good shape, he said. “We had no clue that there was going to be a burial ground with Viking skeletons there,” Lundø said. Consumers who heat with electricity will be hit the hardest, with their costs projected to rise 13.6% to $1,208 for the winter season, the association found. The expense of maintaining and upgrading the electric grid is driving up costs, particularly in the West, where fires have ravaged the grid and electric heating costs could soar nearly 23%. The price tag for heating with propane will rise 7.3% to $1,442 this winter, while natural gas users will see a 7.2% increase to $644. Natural gas prices have stabilized but are expected to rise over the winter as US exports increase, said Mark Wolfe, the association’s executive director. But those who heat with oil will catch somewhat of a break after a pricey heating season last year, with costs expected to rise only 6.1% to $1,963 this winter.

Israel has warned that a “new era” of war was beginning with its “center of gravity” moving north, in a reference to the Lebanon border. Israel has raised the possibility of a ground incursion into Lebanon, which, if undertaken, would be the fourth Israeli invasion of the country in the past 50 years. Men rest on mattresses near the sea in Beirut, Lebanon, after being displaced by Israeli airstrikes on September 28, 2024.
