New York CNN —Crypto’s 14th year in existence was one marred by scandal, bankruptcy, fraud and regulatory squabbling. Bitcoin, the crypto’s bellwether asset, is up 160% for the year. “It was the year of crypto’s resiliency,” Kyla Curley, a crypto expert and partner at global advisory StoneTurn, tells CNN. “Fraud is fraud,” Curley says, “Regardless of the technology or the industry … you cannot stop human nature. Adding to that bullish sentiment: the bitcoin halving, or, more menacingly, “the halvening.”While it’s often a buy-the-hype-sell-the-news kind of event, the halving does tend to push bitcoin higher.

"We got to the point where if a film didn't do a billion dollars in global box office, we were disappointed," he said. Iger also blamed Disney putting quantity before quality for its box office misses. In response to questions about the company's box office misses, the CEO said: "I'm not sure another studio will ever achieve some of the numbers that we achieved." Disney can claim 10 of the 20 highest-grossing films, each of which took more than $1 billion at the box office, per IMDb. However, the film's now made $383 million globally, per Box Office Mojo.

“Quality needs attention to deliver quality, it doesn’t happen by accident,” Iger said. Iger, speaking in a wide-ranging interview with Andrew Ross Sorkin at The New York Times’ annual DealBook summit, acknowledged that Disney had “diluted” the caliber of films produced by Marvel. The company, he added, had “made too many” film sequels that had not been well received by audiences or critics. Francis deSouza, the former CEO of Illumina — a biotech company — said he would not seek re-election to the board. In a statement, Mark Parker, the chairman of Disney’s board, praised Gorman’s succession planning abilities at Morgan Stanley.

Schaeffler’s token bump sets up bigger battle

REUTERS/Staff Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 27 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Schaeffler’s (SHA_p.DE) token bump for Vitesco Technologies (VTSCn.DE) may not ensure a smooth ride. The 3.4 billion euro German industrial group raised its tender price for shares in auto parts group Vitesco by 3% to 94 euros. On that basis the 94 euros tender price is only a 7% premium above fair value. Assuming enough shareholders now tender, the final merger price for any remaining shares will be set by a third-party valuer. Yet Vitesco’s board, backed by three banks including JPMorgan (JPM.N) and Lazard (LAZ.N), have now published fairness opinions saying the company is worth more than 94 euros.

The crypto industry has long sought the creation of a bitcoin ETF (efforts to launch one go back at least a decade). JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday upheld the Biden administration’s approval of the Willow oil-drilling project on Alaska’s remote North Slope, a massive project that drew the ire of environmentalists who had accused the president of backpedaling on his pledge to combat climate change. She added that the alternatives analyzed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management as part of its review were consistent with the policy objectives of the petroleum reserve and the stated purpose and need of the Willow project. The administration's action alienated and outraged some supporters, particularly young activists who launched a TikTok campaign to oppose the project ahead of its approval in March. Connor Dunn, vice president of the Willow project for ConocoPhillips Alaska, said in court documents that it was “highly unlikely” that Willow would proceed if the administration’s approval were to be vacated. Many Alaska Native leaders on the North Slope and groups with ties to the region have argued that Willow is economically vital for their communities.

CNN —President Joe Biden plans to make a direct appeal to the American people to continue funding Ukraine and Israel amid their war efforts in an Oval Office address Thursday, according to two administration officials. The Biden administration in August delivered its last so-called supplemental funding request, which encapsulates unique requests beyond traditional government programs. The proposal requested $24.1 billion to aid Ukraine through the end of the year, but Congress failed to approve it during a process to greenlight short-term federal funding. By contrast, support to sustain aid to Ukraine has waned significantly since Russia’s unprovoked invasion in February 2022. An August CNN poll found 55% of respondents said Congress should not pass more funding to aid Ukraine.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition unveiled in July a strategy toward de-risking Germany's economic relationship with China, calling Beijing a "partner, competitor and systemic rival". German investment in Asia excluding China is rising as a share of overall investment. "But what companies are increasingly doing is to produce in China for China and to position themselves around China for the remaining Asian or global market." Gavin Newsom on Saturday gave the greenlight for the state's transportation and energy officials to figure out how to install solar panels, battery storage and other renewable energy sites along highways. According to the state's Department of Transportation, California has 250 state highways containing more than 15,000 miles of road. The empty land alongside those roads could be used to generate one gigawatt of potential solar energy, which could power over 270,000 California homes, according to a joint report from Environment California, a nonprofit backer of SB 49, and highway solar advocate The Ray. In 2008, Oregon became the first state to develop a solar highway project, which now has nearly 600 solar panels. Using empty space along highways to install clean energy sites would help alleviate pressure on the state's deserts where many solar panels are currently housed.

Friday's jobs report came in well above expectations, leading markets to see higher odds of another rate hike. AdvertisementAdvertisementAfter the red-hot September jobs report, markets are pricing in higher odds for the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates at the November meeting. Investors are now staring down the prospect of higher for longer interest rates. "Bond markets are reflecting an outlook for better growth as rates move higher and equities are digesting an environment where earnings might be better, but higher rates are a headwind to valuation." Bank of America strategists, for their part, warned that stocks have room to fall further before the Fed pulls back on interest rates.

WASHINGTON — The Biden administration waived 26 federal laws in South Texas to greenlight the construction of approximately 20 additional miles of the U.S.-Mexico border wall in the Rio Grande Valley. The continuation of border wall construction, which was announced in late June, is a major policy pivot for the Biden administration. During his 2020 campaign, President Joe Biden promised not "another foot of wall" would be built under his administration. NBC News released a poll last week that found the majority of Americans say Republicans do a better job addressing border security.

CNN —Concerns over Kenya’s human rights record have cast a shadow over a UN decision that gave Kenya the go ahead to lead an armed multinational force to Haiti amid brutal gang violence in the Caribbean country. For a year, the multinational force, comprising 1,000 Kenya police personnel is expected to combat criminal gangs responsible for a wave of killings, kidnappings and rape in Haiti. But human rights groups argue that Kenya’s history of human rights abuses must be evaluated. On Tuesday, Amnesty International Kenya urged UN member states, human rights organizations and citizens to thoroughly examine the “human rights and humanitarian implications” of deploying an armed multinational force to Haiti. What stake does Kenya have to be able to take those chances in a terrain that is foreign and dangerous?

The Writers Guild of America (WGA), which represents roughly 11,500 film and television writers, reached a preliminary three-year deal with major studios on Sunday. While actors remain on strike, late-night and daytime talk shows may resume production once their writers receive the Guild's greenlight to return to work in the coming days or weeks. Film and television producer Todd Garner said he expects that once actors reach a deal, scores of productions will race to restart at once. Major television shows and movies are contractually in first position with actors, Garner said. Its shares have dropped nearly 14% since the writers' strike started on May 2, while Paramount, Disney and Netflix have lost between 20% and 45%.

Since a Supreme Court ruling in 2018 opened the door for more states to greenlight sports gambling, the N.F.L. issued its most extensive set of penalties for violations of its gambling policy. Nine players in the past four years — including one Commanders player — have received at least season-long bans for betting on N.F.L.
