TAMPA, Fla. — South Florida coach Amir Abdur-Rahim, who led the Bulls to the American Athletic Conference’s regular-season championship a year ago, has died, the school announced Thursday. “Coach Abdur-Rahim leaves a lasting impact on our student-athletes, the university and the community. In a complaint Sept. 18, the U.S. claimed civil damages totaling $103,078,056 under the Rivers and Harbors Act, the Oil Pollution Act and general maritime law, according to the release. There are still dozens of outstanding civil claims, including one from the state of Maryland, seeking damages from the owners of the Dali. According to the Justice Department, Thursday's settlement does not include damages to rebuild the bridge because Maryland built, owned, maintained and operated it. The Dali smashed into the Key Bridge early March 26 after it left the Port of Baltimore en route to Sri Lanka. The ship lost power, regained power, then lost power again before it hit the bridge, causing it to collapse into the Fort McHenry Channel.

CNN —The Justice Department has reached a settlement for more than $100 million with the two corporations that owned and operated the container ship that destroyed Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge in March. The payment stemming from Thursday’s settlement will go to the US Treasury and to the budgets of several federal agencies directly affected by the crash or involved in the response, the Justice Department said Thursday. It will not cover any damages for the reconstruction of the bridge, the department said. In its filing last month, the Justice Department said that the “tragedy was entirely avoidable,” pointing to alleged failures in the ship’s infrastructure. Prosecutors wrote that, instead of fixing longstanding problems with their electrical transformer, the companies “jury-rigged their ship” with makeshift braces that repeatedly broke.

A trove of 2,584 silver coins from the time of the Norman Conquest has been bought in the United Kingdom for more than $5 million — making it the country's highest-value discovery ever made by treasure hunters. The coins were purchased by the U.K.’s South West Heritage Trust, an independent organization that supports historical sites, with funding from two charities, the National Lottery and the Art Fund. The South West Heritage Trust's curator of archaeology, Amal Khreisheh, holds one of the uncovered Norman pennies. The coins were likely to have been buried for safekeeping, a common method in the 11th century. That they were never dug up by their owner suggests to historians that they may have been lost or abandoned because of the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Saturday the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar will not halt the "Axis of Resistance" and that Hamas would live on. "His loss is undoubtedly painful for the Axis of Resistance, but this front did not cease advancing with the martyrdom of prominent figures," Khamenei said in a statement. The "Axis of Resistance", built up with years of Iranian support, includes Hamas, the Lebanese Hezbollah group, the Houthi movement in Yemen, and various Shi'ite groups in Iraq and Syria. The groups describe themselves as the resistance to Israel and U.S. influence in the Middle East. "As always, we will remain by the side of the sincere fighters and combatants, by God's grace and help," Khamenei said.
