WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert joked Sunday she'll have to get new shoes now that the league has added one expansion team, with another most likely on the way soon. Engelbert has a pair of high heels with all of the WNBA team logos on them. The shoes will become a collectors' item in 2025 when the expansion team owned by the Golden State Warriors starts playing. “The goal is to add a second one, or 14th team, by 2025,” Engelbert said before Game 1 of the WNBA Finals. Portland had a WNBA team from 2000-02, playing its games at the Rose Garden before the franchise folded.

NEW YORK (AP) — Magic Johnson's love for his Los Angeles Lakers has kept him from considering ownership of any other NBA team. The New York Knicks would be the one franchise that could make him have second thoughts. But the basketball Hall of Famer repeatedly has passed on opportunities for ownership in the sport he knows best. “I love being with fans who are so passionate about their team and the Knick fans are, and they’re smart. They’re smart basketball fans and so that one I would have to think about.

National Basketball Association superstar Kevin Durant and business partner Rich Kleiman on Tuesday announced the launch of a new advisory firm under the duo's Boardroom media company. The firm, Boardroom Advisory, will operate on a yearly fee structure and work with athletes as well as executives and brands on creating business and sports ownership opportunities, content and more, the company said in a press release. "Boardroom Advisory is a natural extension of the brand, and is a way for us to bring our resources to other athletes." The firm doesn't intend to compete with agencies and will work in tandem with athletes' preexisting representatives, a spokesperson for Boardroom said. Mandatory Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 26 (Reuters) - Bronny James, the teenage son of NBA great LeBron James, is expected to return to basketball "in the very near future" after he suffered a cardiac arrest last month, ESPN reported on Friday, citing a statement from a family spokesperson. The 18-year-old went into cardiac arrest on July 24 while training with the University of Southern California (USC) basketball team. Follow-up evaluations have revealed that the probable cause of James' cardiac arrest was a congenital heart defect, according to the statement, ESPN reported. Turning verse into action is tricky, especially with ideas as lofty as the ones in Inua Ellams’s epic poem “The Half-God of Rainfall,” now appearing in theatrical guise at New York Theater Workshop. The poem is a melodious, sky-high tale of a basketball superstar born as a result of a celestial contest between the Greek and Yoruba gods of thunder, Zeus and Sango. But the stage adaptation, which opened on Monday, runs into some flaws that, while not fatal, strand this Nigerian writer’s work in the mortal realm. To Hera’s (Kelley Curran) defeated disdain, Zeus rapes Modúpé (Jennifer Mogbock), a Nigerian woman, and soon the mixed-race half-god Demi (Mister Fitzgerald) is born. Demi’s growing celebrity eventually lands him face to face with Zeus, providing a chance to avenge his mother.

CNN —With the Super Bowl heading to Las Vegas next year, could Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce’s unlikely golfing victory in Sin City be an auspicious sign for the Kansas City Chiefs? Mahomes and Kelce pulled off an upset 3 and 2 win against NBA stars Steph Curry and Klay Thompson in the eighth edition of “The Match” charity golf event, this year staged at Wynn Golf Club in Vegas. Quarterback Mahomes and tight end Kelce entered Thursday’s 12-hole game against their NBA counterparts as heavy underdogs, particularly given Curry’s prowess on the golf course. Mahomes and Kelce completed their victory on the next hole as the tight end – despite heckles from the side of the green – drained his close-range putt. The series started in 2018 when Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson went head-to-head at Shadow Creek Golf Course in North Las Vegas.

The 2020 campaign to restore race-conscious affirmative action in California was close to gospel within the Democratic Party. It drew support from the governor, senators, state legislative leaders and a who’s who of business, nonprofit and labor elites, Black, Latino, white and Asian. Supporters raised many millions of dollars for the referendum and outspent opponents by 19 to 1. None of these efforts persuaded Jimmie Romero, a 63-year-old barber who grew up in the working-class Latino neighborhood of Wilmington in Los Angeles. Affirmative action was not one of those.

Money is pouring into the hedge fund business, adding to a war for talent. Maybe a bunch of NBA or NFL players end up on a trading floor for charity. The war for talent is partly a reflection of hedge-fund performance. My colleague Alex Morrell wrote recently:After years of relative quiet, macro strategies at hedge funds surged back to life in 2022 amid rising interest rates, inflation, and geopolitical convulsions. Writing for Insider recently, hedge-fund recruiter John Pierson said that "the competition for investment talent is escalating, and finding top portfolio managers is no longer a contact sport — it's an all-out war."

Built in the multipurpose stadium craze of the 1960s, Oakland Coliseum was quirky from the start. Feral cats, leaking sewage and a possum that lives in one of the television booths wouldn’t come along until later. Unpopular changes to the stadium at the behest of the Oakland Raiders of the N.F.L. The maintenance of the park became unmanageable, and the team’s various owners consistently complained about the lack of amenities. The team averaged only 9,849 fans a game last season, and things are even worse this year, at 8,874.

I slide into a cushy leather chair in this bustling shop next to a small flooring business. The hum of clippers echoes throughout the room. A framed photo of former President Barack Obama hangs on a wall, and the TV is tuned to highlights from a recent Golden State Warriors basketball game. But the volume is turned down low, and instead I hear snippets of conversations — quick descriptions of desired cuts, followed by comfortable banter about politics (Donald Trump running for president — again!) career scoring record) and life (a 20-something moving in with his girlfriend).
One of its bonds trades at 56 cents on the dollar, and Fitch thinks default is a real possibility. One of WeWork's bonds, which matures in 2025, recently traded at 56 cents on the dollar, according to Bloomberg data. A healthy company's debt often trades at 100 cents on the dollar, or at a very slight discount. Fitch upgraded WeWork's issuer default rating to 'CCC-', in a nod to the debt restructuring. Discussions of debt restructuring represent a striking new low for a company that used to be one of the most valuable startups ever.
A grin broke across Austin Reaves’s face at the post-game podium. The Los Angeles Lakers had just eliminated the defending champion Golden State Warriors on Friday night, and Reaves had contributed 23 points and 6 assists—both numbers second on the team only to LeBron James. He had arced in four 3-pointers (one from half court as the second quarter expired), sidestepped Stephen Curry with a behind-the-back dribble, and flipped passes to open shooters with both hands. In a sure sign of his Lakers arrival, he’d been pulled from the game early, so the Los Angeles crowd could voice its appreciation. “It was not emotional, like, tears-wise,” Reaves said, “but the feeling when we subbed out with three minutes to go was very special.”
May 14 (Reuters) - Four-time All-Star Jayson Tatum is savoring his Boston Celtics' upcoming Eastern Conference Finals rematch against the Miami Heat, after stomping out the Philadelphia 76ers 112-88 on Sunday with a record-breaking 51 points in Game 7. The Celtics beat the Heat a year ago en route to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Golden State Warriors. Tatum promised there would be fireworks when their rivalry with Miami continues this week. The Heat have enjoyed a charmed run as the first eighth seeds in nearly a quarter-century to reach the conference finals. The Celtics and the Heat meet for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals in Boston on Wednesday.
You’d have to look closely or you’d miss the homemade sign nailed to a telephone pole outside the Lakers’ practice facility in El Segundo, Calif. It’s right outside the entrance to the players’ parking lot, but many of them miss its blue-and-yellow words as they drive in. “I SEE GREATNESS IN YOU,” it says. The sign gives no indication of who “I” might be, who “you” are or what kind of greatness you possess. But in a small yet meaningful way, the message has inspired Lakers Coach Darvin Ham as he leads the team in their Western Conference semifinal series against the Golden State Warriors. Ham has even forged an unlikely friendship with the man who posted the sign: Terrance Burney, a basketball-loving airline employee whose home is filled with inspirational signs.
LeBron James’s immediate goal is to win another N.B.A. championship with the Los Angeles Lakers. But longer term, he wants to play in the league with his older son, LeBron Jr., who goes by Bronny, beginning in 2024. “I need to be on the floor with my boy,” James told ESPN in January, recalling a situation from his childhood in which Ken Griffey and his son, Ken Griffey Jr., played for the Seattle Mariners. He was seated at courtside Saturday night as the Lakers took a 2-1 lead in their Western Conference semifinal series with the Golden State Warriors.

Late in the first quarter of the Golden State Warriors’ 127-100 win over the Los Angeles Lakers Thursday night, Stephen Curry flicked in a jump shot. If you watched the play on a highlight reel, you would have seen the familiar image: Curry whipping the ball up from his waistband and goose-necking his wrist, jogging back before the ball even dropped through the rim. But if you tracked Curry from the start of the play, you would have seen something else. Curry started near the half-court line, strolling nowhere in particular, blanketed by the Lakers’ Dennis Schröder. Then, with a sudden cut, he went around a teammate’s screen and into open air, just inside the 3-point arc.
