Microsoft's early investment in AI may already be paying off. AdvertisementAdvertisementAfter heavily investing in OpenAI after the launch of ChatGPT, Microsoft sparked something of an AI arms race among its big tech rivals. Microsoft's success had a lot to do with the success of Copilot, Rotibi said. "Microsoft has captured the zeitgeist of kind of the AI and generative AI with copilot," she said. Despite Microsoft''s success, Rotibi said it was still too early to call a winner in the AI race or say whether Google was falling behind.

Microsoft Microsoft shares jumped as much as 5% in extended trading on Tuesday after the software maker issued fiscal first-quarter results that beat Wall Street estimates. Here's how the company did:Earnings: $2.99 per share, vs. $2.65 per share as expected by LSEG, formerly known as Refinitiv. Microsoft doesn't disclose Azure revenue in dollars. At constant currency, Azure revenue rose 28%, accelerating from 27% in the fiscal fourth quarter. That was up 3% and higher than the $12.85 billion StreetAccount consensus.

Microsoft's chief financial officer Amy Hood said on a conference call with analysts that higher-than-expected AI consumption was responsible for a 3 percentage point boost to its cloud business. Alphabet has prioritized snaring AI startups as customers for its cloud division, while Microsoft has relied on its existing relationships to secure larger customers. Azure revenue rose 29%, higher than a 26.2% growth estimate from market research firm Visible Alpha. RBC Capital Markets has previously estimated that Microsoft will clock over $3 billion in revenue from generative AI offerings this fiscal year. Quite surprising to see strong growth reacceleration in the Azure Cloud segment, which is clearly driven by AI-as-a-service related demand," said Global X analyst Tejas Dessai.

Just like the cloud transformed every software category, we think AI is one such transformational shift. Therefore, this notion of Copilots that we're introducing is really going to be revolutionary in terms of driving productivity and communication. Milton Friedman once famously said: "the business of business is business." One is, is the business of business just business? So, I think AI can actually be very helpful in many ways to be a little more empathetic and more understanding of the world.

Microsoft, Meta, and more are touting AI assistants that are far more advanced than Siri and Alexa. These AI assistants have the potential to deal with tedious digital tasks, or "crapmin." From Microsoft to Meta, tech companies leading the charge in AI are starting to make clear what the future of AI looks like to them. Meta's AI assistant "surfaces options directly in the chat, so you can decide as a group which location to explore." Letting an AI assistant take care of all aspects of our "crapmin" will require a lot of confidence in its capabilities.

Bahat brings this same radical directness to Bloomberg Beta, the early-stage venture capital fund housed within the larger Bloomberg empire that he's run for the past decade. And Bloomberg Beta was making investments in generative AI as far back as 2015, before the term "generative AI" even existed. "It felt like we were just waiting for the right moment," said Cham, Bloomberg Beta partner and de-facto chief technologist, "where the rest of the world would see it." Bloomberg Beta made the decision early on to publish its entire operating manual on GitHub, including sensitive information about average check size and investment criteria. GitLab could be a winner in the evergreen software space, according to Bernstein. The firm initiated coverage of GitLab stock with an outperform rating as well as a $62 per share price target. According to the analyst, GitLab operates in a duopoly with Microsoft-owned GitHub, with both companies sharing roughly 70% and increasing market share of cloud development Gits, or code repositories. "GitLab's opening is to become the "Switzerland" platform for CI/CD development pipelines — a durable and large market position," Weed said. Still, the firm noted market constraints on Gitlab's pricing power and product expansion options, noting competition from GitHub, Australian software firm Atlassian and potentially Datadog.

Dan’s research and teaching focus is on using AI for legal services and the regulation of AI in society. For instance, we can develop AI tools to help individuals understand their responsibilities and rights, and preserve and enforce those rights. People in businesses, large and small, are already using chatbots, AI assistants and other AI tools to help them comply with laws, regulations and internal policies. Additionally, new roles are emerging in the legal industry, such as legal engineers who build systems, legal data scientists and legal operations professionals. AI tools will then quickly re-optimize decisions associated with inventory shipments, staffing and promotions.

The logo of Meta Platforms' business group is seen in Brussels, Belgium December 6, 2022. REUTERS/Yves Herman/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 24 (Reuters) - Meta Platforms (META.O) on Thursday said it would release an artificial intelligence (AI) model designed to assist in writing computer code, furthering its push into the new technology. Facebook and Instagram owner Meta has released a flurry of AI models, mostly free, this year, including an open-source language model, called Llama, that poses a serious challenge to proprietary models sold by Microsoft-backed (MSFT.O) OpenAI and Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) Google. The new AI model is built on top of Meta's latest Llama 2 language model and will be available in different configurations, the company said, as it gears up to compete with Microsoft's code-writing tool GitHub Copilot. Code Llama supports the popular coding languages like Python, Java and C++ and is not recommended for general text tasks, Meta said.
