Vice President Harris is expected to call President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday to concede the 2024 presidential race and is also expected to speak publicly, according to two Harris aides. NBC News called the presidential race Wednesday morning, projecting that Trump won just after 5:30 a.m. Harris, 60, launched her presidential campaign after President Joe Biden, 81, withdrew from the race on July 21 and endorsed her as the Democratic Party's nominee. While Harris had about three months to campaign, Trump launched his re-election campaign, his third for president, shortly after the 2022 midterm elections that November. Polls had shown in recent weeks that the race was dead even and Harris faced a gender gap in which more men, specifically white men, were backing Trump.

But the balance of the evidence from the NBC News Exit Poll suggests that Trump owes his victory to more common, less polarizing factors that drive many elections year in and year out. That included a striking shift of Latino voters into the GOP column compared with 2020 — they backed Trump by 13 points more. Women broke for Harris, 54%-44%, while men favored Trump, 54%-44% — a gap in support amounting to 22 percentage points. But in 2020, Trump performed even worse among women, losing them to Biden 57%-42%. A final factor favoring Trump: his appeal among Americans who are less attached to politics and elections:

— Delaware state Sen. Sarah McBride won the state’s only House seat Tuesday, NBC News projects, making her the first openly transgender person elected to Congress. McBride, a Democrat, defeated Republican John Whalen III, taking 57.8% of the vote with 95% of the vote in. There will be a lot of accounting of why Harris came so close but did not close the deal. I know the fundamentals of how and why Trump exists — I’ve written about them too many times to count — and I know that nothing about those fundamentals has changed. This election was about who told a better story about the fundamentals without promising anything to fix those fundamentals. I know that most Americans are center-right and that the left has not yet built the power base necessary to make most Americans center-left. She was always going to be the only legitimate candidate in a race against Donald Trump, a felon and self-aggrandizing political troll.

The Prime Video series will be the first to come out of Amazon's deal with The Wonder Project, a Christian-focused production company, for faith-based films and TV shows. But then there are voters who say former President Donald Trump lacks the character or demeanor a president should have. And some specifically panned the the racist and demeaning rhetoric from Trump allies at last week's rally at Madison Square Garden, criticizing them for alienating Americans instead of bringing them together. Other voters derisively mentioned Harris' laughter, called Trump more "transparent in what he's looking to do," and cited their support for Trump economic policies like tariffs and not taxing overtime pay. For the Harris supporters who briefly, seriously, considered Trump, the former president's tone and demeanor looms large. Again, a handful of voters brought up the rally comments about Puerto Ricans when voters describing something that made them view Trump more negatively.
