CNN —The US men’s soccer team suffered a brutal return to Olympic action as it was beaten 3-0 by host nation France in its opening match of the Paris Games on Wednesday. The soccer tournament at this year’s Olympics kicked off two days before the Opening Ceremony, with teams consisting predominantly of under-23 players. Playing in its first Olympic Games since 2008, the young US men’s team knew an opening match against the host would be a tough test but, for the first hour at least, it looked more than capable of causing an upset. It will then play Guinea in the final group match on July 30. Meanwhile, Spain beat Uzbekistan 2-1, while Japan thrashed Paraguay 5-0 in some of the other standout scores of the soccer tournament so far.

Paris CNN —French sprinter Sounkamba Sylla will now be taking part in the Opening Ceremony at this year’s Olympics, France’s sports minister told CNN, after the runner previously said she would not be allowed to because she wears a headscarf. “You are selected for the Olympic Games, organized in your country, but you can’t take part in the opening ceremony because you wear a scarf on your head,” Sylla posted on her private Instagram account Sunday, per Reuters. But in an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, French sports minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra said a solution has been found to allow Sylla to take part in Friday’s ceremony. “The issue is solved,” Oudéa-Castéra told Amanpour. The Opening Ceremony takes place on Friday and will be held along the River Seine, marking the first time that the ceremony has not taken place inside a stadium.

CNN —France’s Interior Ministry rejected around 5,000 security accreditation requests for Olympics volunteers and workers, with roughly 1,000 of those cases blocked due to suspicions of meddling or espionage. The Ministry outlined in a statement on Tuesday that it conducted “about a million” administrative investigations into various staff for the 2024 Paris Games. Of those checks, varying threats were identified, including meddling and espionage, convicted criminal records, illegal alien statuses, radical Islam, and ultra-right and ultra-left ideologies. The statement re-iterated that this will be the first Opening Ceremony taking place outside of a stadium for the Summer Games, creating significant security challenges. However, the ministry expressed its confidence, stating that it’s “now ready” after final rehearsals took place on Tuesday evening.

A coalition of France’s left-wing parties on Tuesday tapped a little-known civil servant to be prime minister, unexpectedly ending weeks of bickering after snap parliamentary elections plunged the country into political gridlock. But President Emmanuel Macron immediately rejected the coalition’s pick, Lucie Castets. The French president alone has the power to appoint the prime minister and the cabinet. His choice must, theoretically, reflect the political balance in Parliament, but there is no constitutionally mandated deadline for him to choose. The left-wing coalition, known as the New Popular Front, said in a statement that it had agreed on Ms. Castets, 37, who has worked at France’s treasury and its anti-money-laundering unit and currently handles financial matters at Paris City Hall.

For years, French officials had boasted that some 600,000 people would attend the Opening Ceremony, but that number has been slashed due to safety concerns. He said a “strictly controlled” zone alongside the banks of the river will be closed off before the Opening Ceremony and anyone entering into it would be checked. London CNN —Spanish artist Almudena Romero is known for creating artworks that use plants as her medium. Almudena Romero “The Pigment Change” series has a chapter called “Family Album,” in which Romero projects a negative onto live watercress, using the plants’ natural photosynthesis to create areas of light and dark. Almudena Romero This artwork, which was exhibited this year on International Women’s Day, is a tribute to a childhood friend. Almudena Romero Romero questions the long-term future of conventional photographic film, when the materials needed to produce it are limited. What’s Left for France’s Left?

When a left-wing coalition came first this month in France’s parliamentary elections and upended a predicted victory for the far right, supporters filled the streets. “The left has awakened,” a supporter said. Almost immediately after their victory, the parties in the coalition started fighting among themselves. “It’s going to be hard,” said Zahia Hamdane of France Unbowed, the far-left party of the firebrand leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, on Friday. “I took it very badly yesterday.”The alliance of four left-wing parties — Communists, Socialists, Greens and France Unbowed — was hastily pulled together after President Emmanuel Macron dissolved the National Assembly and called for snap elections last month.

Julio Garro, Argentina’s undersecretary of sport, said on Argentine radio that national team captain Lionel Messi and Argentinian Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia should apologize. That prompted the country’s president, Javier Milei, to sack Garro. “For this reason, Julio Garro ceases to be undersecretary of sports of the nation.”However, Garro later “categorically denied” asking Messi to apologize. In a separate post, Garro went on to thank Milei for letting him be part of his team. In his apology, Fernández said he was “caught up in the euphoria,” but Lloris insisted this was no excuse.

Paris CNN —A French soldier deployed in the country’s anti-terrorism force was stabbed at a train station in central Paris on Monday evening, French government officials said, a little more than a week before the Paris 2024 Olympics’ opening ceremony is due to take place. “A soldier with Operation Sentinelle was stabbed while on patrol at Gare de l’Est in Paris. Operation Sentinelle is an anti-terrorism military operation that was established in the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo terror attack in January 2015. France has increased its security measures around Paris ahead of the Olympics, which includes bolstering the Operation Sentinelle forces. “Our thoughts are with the soldier injured this evening at Gare de l’Est, who was deployed as part of Operation Sentinelle,” French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu said on X.

Jordan Bardella, the president of the far-right National Rally, greeted his party’s 125 newly elected lawmakers on Wednesday morning with a few congratulations — and a lot of warnings. “You are a source of pride for millions of French people,” Mr. Bardella told the lawmakers after they entered the National Assembly, France’s lower house of Parliament, to take their seats. One candidate was pulled from the race after a photograph of her wearing a Nazi cap appeared on social media. Several National Rally leaders and analysts said the controversies played a role in the party’s third place finish after it had been widely expected to win. The disappointing election results have now placed the National Rally at a crossroads as it looks toward presidential elections in 2027.

Macron said it was “in light of these principles” that he will decide on the appointment of France’s next prime minister. The NFP won 182 seats in the National Assembly, making it the largest group in the 577-seat parliament. Celine Gallois is more careful these days about what she puts in her shopping basket. The cost to fill up the gas tank of her small car jumped to €90 a week from €60. And Ms. Gallois’s electricity bills, which President Emmanuel Macron’s government had capped during an energy crisis last year, shot up again last month after the subsidy ended. All of this led her to cast a vote for Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally party for the first time during France’s parliamentary elections this weekend. “People are struggling, and there seems to be no relief in sight,” said Ms. Gallois, her frustration clear as she wandered through an artisanal market in the northern French city of Beauvais with her fiancé, but refrained from buying.

Primed to celebrate victory but left explaining why his party finished third, the leader of France’s hard-right National Rally blamed Sunday’s surprise election result on the “caricature” of his party as extremist. That “disinformation,” he said, handed victory to “formations of the extreme left.”The speech to glum supporters on election night by Jordan Bardella, leader of the nationalist party formerly known as the National Front, captured a Europe-wide trend: intense political polarization in which each side denounces the other as “extremist.”Europe is far from what the British historian Eric Hobsbawm termed the “age of extremes” in the 20th century, when the continent succumbed to the twin extremist ideologies of fascism and communism. There are no violent street battles in Berlin, Paris or Vienna as there were before and sometimes after World War II between rival camps, or urban terror campaigns like those in the 1970s and ’80s by the would-be left-wing revolutionaries of Germany’s Red Army Faction and France’s Direct Action.

One thing was clear after France’s surprise election results on Sunday: Any new government formed by President Emmanuel Macron would face months of political paralysis. What’s less certain is whether that gridlock will tip France’s heavily indebted economy further into distress. “Uncertainty hangs over France’s future government architecture,” said the agency, which had already downgraded France’s debt rating on May 31, rattling the government, whose economic credibility has been one of its main political assets. Should the polarization of France’s new Parliament weaken the government’s ability to mend its finances, France’s debt could be downgraded again, it added. The result left no party — including Mr. Macron’s centrist coalition — with a majority and has splintered the lower house of Parliament into three bitterly antagonistic blocs.

For once, Didier Deschamps could reflect on a news conference that passed by almost without incident. On Sunday, French voters had issued a stinging rebuke to their country’s resurgent far right in a seismic legislative election. Sandwiched between the two was an appearance by Deschamps, the coach of the French national team, in the full megawatt glare of the world’s news media.
