But to archaeologists, the Tollense Valley is considered Europe’s oldest battlefield. The biggest mysteries that researchers aim to uncover are why the battle occurred and who fought in it. A long time agoYears of excavations in the Tollense Valley have uncovered evidence that the site was the scene of Europe's oldest battlefield 3,250 years ago. S. SauerDozens of bronze and flint arrowheads recovered from the Tollense Valley are revealing details about the able-bodied warriors who fought in the Bronze Age battle. The research team analyzed and compared the arrowheads, some of which were still embedded in the remains of the fallen.

CNN —No trees have grown on the windswept Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean for tens of thousands of years — just shrubs and other low-lying vegetation. “It’s very sort of windswept and barren.”The Falkland Islands are a British-ruled overseas territory over which Great Britain and Argentina fought a brief war in 1982. But the story of this hidden forest goes back even further in time than the researchers initially thought. “The Falkland Islands are currently covered by grasslands and lack native trees,” Donovan added. However, the islands are unlikely to see a return to a forest landscape anytime soon, Thomas said.

I want to be present when I perform and give the best shows possible,” her statement continued. Earlier this summer, Roan also shared thoughts on her fandom after her meteoric rise, and certain people she felt have been invasive. She shared two videos on TikTok last month in which she criticized some fans who have followed her around, “stalked” her family and demanded photos or hugs in public despite Roan’s resistance. “I don’t care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing to do to people who are famous or a little famous,” she said in one video.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Bern said, “We are aware of reports of the death of a U.S. citizen in Switzerland. The device is the brainchild of Philip Nitschke, an Australian physician famous for his work on assisted suicide since the 1990s. While euthanasia remains illegal, assisted suicide, as long as done without a selfish motive, is allowed under Swiss law which has led to the opening of several assisted suicide clinics in the country. The U.S. Forest Service says it will not hire seasonal employees in the next fiscal year because of expected cuts to its budget, just as fire seasons grow longer, hotter and deadlier. “As an agency, we have a responsibility to plan for the most conservative funding picture, and these actions reflect that reality,” Forest Service spokesperson Scott Owen said in a statement. U.S. Forest Service firefighters Monday in San Bernardino National Forest in California. In March, the Forest Service asked for $8.9 billion for the coming fiscal year, an increase of $658.5 million over the previous fiscal year, according to the latest budget justification report. They’ve captured several photos on a motion-activated camera installed by California Fish and Wildlife agents that show what appears to be the face of an older large black bear. “We would wait for the bear to leave the crawlspace,” said Kevin Howells, of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. MOSCOW — A court in Russia’s Kaliningrad region said it had sentenced a U.S. citizen to six years in jail and fined him for 100,000 roubles ($1,078) for kidnapping his son, after he tried to leave Russia with the child without permission from the boy’s mother. The court said that the U.S. citizen, Daniel Joseph Schneider, tried to leave Russia with his four-year-old son, who is a Russian citizen, on July 29, 2023. Schneider was detained near Poland by Russia’s border service while trying to cross the Russian border in a forest swamp, the court said. Russian state TV channel Vesti said that Schneider had tried to get permission from the child’s mother to take him abroad but that she refused. In August, Russia, the United States and several other countries carried out a major prisoner exchange, which involved 24 prisoners — 16 moving from Russia to the West and eight sent back to Russia from the West.

Reuters —Russia appears to have suffered a “catastrophic failure” in a test of its Sarmat missile, a key weapon in the modernization of its nuclear arsenal, according to arms experts who have analyzed satellite images of the launch site. It’s a big hole in the ground,” said Pavel Podvig, an analyst based in Geneva, who runs the Russian Nuclear Forces project. A September 21 satellite image shows a closer view of the launch site after the apparent launch failure. Maxar TechnologiesIISS analyst Wright said a test failure did not necessarily mean that the Sarmat program was in jeopardy. “However, this is the fourth successive test failure of Sarmat which at the very least will push back its already delayed introduction into service even further and at most might raise questions about the program’s viability,” he said.

A California firefighter was arrested on suspicion of arson in a series of small fires that burned in wine country in recent weeks, officials said Friday. Robert Hernandez, 38, was accused of setting five fires between Aug. 15 and Sept. 14 while off-duty, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, said in a news release. Hernadez, a Cal Fire apparatus engineer, allegedly ignited the blazes around Geyserville, Healdsburg and Windsor, the department said. More than 4 million acres burned across the state in 2020, setting a record for the largest number of acres burned in California in modern times, the department said. So far this year, nearly one million acres have burned, including fast-moving blazes in Southern California that threatened tens of thousands of homes and prompted thousands of evacuations in the foothills of San Bernardino County.

Conakry, Guinea Reuters —People living near a chimpanzee research center in Guinea attacked the facility on Friday after a woman said one of the animals had killed her infant, the center’s managers said. Eyewitnesses said the crowd was reacting to the news that the mutilated body of an infant had been found 3 km (1.9 miles) from the Nimba Mountains Nature Reserve, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The research center said it had recorded six chimpanzee attacks on humans within the reserve since the start of the year. There are just seven left in Guinea’s Bossou forest, which forms part of the Nimba Mountains Nature Reserve, and is close to subsistence farming communities of the Nzerekore Region. The Nimba Mountains are also home to one of Guinea’s largest iron ore reserves, which has raised concern among environmentalists about the impact of mining on chimpanzees.

The three people who lost their lives in Alaska are just a few of those who have died on trips to see the world’s fast-disappearing glaciers. But there’s also another motivation increasingly present — the desire to see the glaciers before they disappear. In Alaska, Sheldon used to be able to find a good area for ice climbing for the whole summer. Many are convinced danger is manageable, he told CNN, but “if you’re honest about it, that might often be a rather naive understanding.”As well the safety issues glaciers pose tourists, tourists are also a huge risk to the glaciers themselves. As the glaciers shift, so too will glacier tourism, something that’s starkly clear to Sheldon.

Black women are more likely than white women to die from even the most treatable types of breast cancer, a study published Tuesday in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found. While Black women and white women are diagnosed with breast cancer at similar rates, Black women are 40% more likely to die from the disease. For those with HR-positive, HER2-positive tumors, Black women were 34% more likely to die than white women.
