Taiwanese Coast Guard personnel work on a vessel off the coast of Nangan Township, in the Matsu Islands on Oct. 15, 2024, a day after China conducted the "Joint Sword-2024B" military drills around Taiwan. Taiwan's defense ministry said on Sunday it had spotted 35 Chinese military aircraft, including fighters and bombers, flying to the island's south on the way to exercises in the Pacific, a second day in a row it has reported such activities. China's defense ministry did not respond to a request for comment on the missions, reported just days before Tuesday's U.S. presidential election. The United States is bound by law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself, and its arms sales to Taipei, including a $2 billion missile system announced last month, infuriate Beijing. Taiwan's defense ministry said that from 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) on Sunday it had detected 37 Chinese military aircraft, including J-16 fighters, nuclear-capable H-6 bombers and drones.

Trump spent Friday in Michigan and Wisconsin, Saturday in North Carolina, and today will be in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia. If Harris won Michigan and Wisconsin, she would still need to add Georgia or North Carolina to her column. "Blended-wing" aircraft could be the future of commercial aviation. Airbus and startups JetZero and Natilus lead the development of these more efficient flying wings. Among the most likely concepts is a "blended-wing" body aircraft, which combines the fuselage and wing into one. A handful of companies have announced plans to build these unique vessels by the 2030s, including startups JetZero and Natilus and long-standing planemaker Airbus. The company has decades of experience designing commercial airplanes — leading the industry with its best-selling Airbus A320 family of similar capacity.

Lindsay Roselle transformed her view on motherhood after an ayahuasca retreat in the Amazon. AdvertisementThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Lindsay Roselle, a 42-year-old entrepreneur and mom from Colorado who attended an ayahuasca retreat and started microdosing psilocybin. Then in 2022, I was flying to a remote part of the Amazon for a three-day ayahuasca retreat, where I ingested a plant-based psychedelic used for medicinal, spiritual, and ceremonial purposes. My mom contributed to my negative idea of motherhoodGiving up my entrepreneurial career was never an option for me. The first one would be the biggest: a three-day ayahuasca ceremony held during a two-week trip to the Amazon.

After a messy election, the Bank of Japan decided to hold its benchmark policy rate at 0.25%, as expected. These outlook risks highlight that the timing of the next BOJ rate hike could depend heavily on developments overseas, as well as the exchange rate and its impact on the Japanese economy, Otani added. He added that it would surpass the 13 trillion yen ($84.6 billion) allocated in last year's supplementary budget. When Ishiba returns, he is expected to hold an extraordinary Diet session, during which he hopes to pass the supplementary budget plan, according to local news. Then I would probably rule out a rate hike in December, because that would create a lot of uncertainty about the fiscal situation."

Budget airlines like Spirit, Frontier, and Southwest are struggling to turn a profit. The still-in-service airlines Neeleman founded, like JetBlue Airways, Azul Brazilian Airlines, Canada's WestJet, and Breeze Airways, largely follow this idea. Historically, these strategies have been absent from the likes of Spirit, Frontier, and Southwest, which have stuck to all-economy aircraft with little choice. Southwest Airlines boats an open-seating policy where seats are first-co,me first-serve. Low-cost airlines should continue to ditch barebones planesSouthwest shouldn't be the only one to move away from historical norms.

Hong Kong CNN —China appears to have built a new and unusual aircraft carrier, intriguing experts with a potentially first-of-its-kind vessel that could further increase Beijing’s rapidly expanding maritime power. This potential new aircraft carrier “is of a somewhat unusual shape and size – much smaller than China’s previous naval aircraft carriers,” said Thomas Shugart, a former US Navy submarine commander and now a fellow at the Center for a New American Security. Another view of the satellite imagery captured on October 23, 2024, showing a potentially new class of a Chinese aircraft carrier at a shipyard in the southeastern end of the country. Only the United States Navy operates aircraft carriers bigger than the Fujian. Conducted in the South China Sea, the exercise was “aiming to enhance the integrated combat capability of the aircraft carrier formations” and was “part of the Liaoning aircraft carrier formation’s regular real-combat training in the high seas,” Xinhua said.

Some airlines have bought Airbus' new extra-long-haul A321XLR to replace their aging Boeing 757s. That's about 800 miles further than its predecessor and at least 880 miles further than its closest competitor: the aging, out-of-production Boeing 757. Carriers like United Airlines and Icelandair are lining up for the new jet, putting in more than 550 orders so far. Continental Airlines, now United Airlines, switched its 757-300 order to the newer 737-800 in 2003, for example. Five people have been charged in Texas, accused of organizing and participating in an illegal cheating scheme that certified more than 200 unqualified teachers and saw the plot’s “kingpin” rake in more than $1 million, prosecutors announced. Investigators noticed a pattern: Numerous teacher certification candidates who previously failed certification exams would drive from faraway Texas cities to the Houston area to take an exam. Then a tip came in that exposed the cheating scheme. He'd pay her about 20% of the $2,500 to allow the cheating, Levine said. “They are going to go over every teacher, I’m sure, and take whatever action they see fit if they believe someone fraudulently obtained a certification,” Levine said.
