Tropical Storm Debby has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane ahead of its anticipated landfall on Florida's Gulf Coast on Monday, U.S. forecasters said late Friday. The hurricane was about 65 miles west of Cedar Key, Florida, and about 100 miles west of Tampa, and moving north at about 12 mph, the center said. Debby is expected to continue strengthening before it reaches the Big Bend coast on Monday, weakening after it moves inland across northern Florida and southern Georgia, it said. A sign warns of a storm surge before the possible arrival of Tropical Storm Debby in Cedar Key, Fla., on Sunday. Ron DeSantis compared Debby’s path to that of Hurricane Idalia, the Category 4 storm in 2023 that caused significant damage in north Florida.

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good, R-Va., has lost his primary recount, a Virginia court certified Thursday, cementing his narrow defeat to GOP state Sen. John McGuire. National polls showed that Trump was in the best position of any Republican presidential hopeful in more than two decades. Related stories"He did crap the bed today," Republican political strategist Scott Jennings said of Trump on CNN last night. And if the old headline wasn't enough, Trump on Thursday morning posted an old photo of Harris showing her "Indian heritage." There's a reason in the closing days of the 2016 campaign, Trump had to tell himself out loud to "stay" on message. CNN —JD Vance is making a second pass at introducing himself to America as the Ohio senator attempts to put his uneven rollout as Donald Trump’s running mate in the rearview mirror. Vance is also expected to begin holding news conferences with reporters as early as this week, the source said. At a closed-door fundraiser in Oklahoma City last week, Trump’s finance team was hoping the former president’s new running mate would raise $1 million. The campaign was well aware of Vance’s past criticisms of Trump and the deeply anti-abortion views he vocally defended. Still, people close to both Trump and Vance argue that America has yet to learn how effective the Ohio senator can be when in the spotlight.

In the video, the edited voice-over says, "I was selected because I am the ultimate diversity hire. And that may just run afoul of X's policy on synthetic and manipulated media, which states: "You may not share synthetic, manipulated, or out-of-context media that may deceive or confuse people and lead to harm ("misleading media")." This is a violation of @X’s policies on synthetic media & misleading identities. A video on social media appeared to show the president hitting out at his critics and cursing them.

Critics say DEI programs are discriminatory and attempt to solve racial discrimination by disadvantaging other groups, particularly White Americans. These diversity training efforts emerged around the time that affirmative action began by executive order from President John F. Kennedy. Despite the backlash against DEI programs and initiatives, many companies are standing firm in their support for DEI. And 71% of people surveyed said they think DEI training is important to “creating a positive workplace culture.”What does DEI look like at work? Thrivent’s DEI training teaches employees how to understand and bridge cultural differences in the workplace, Baker said.

CNN —With President Joe Biden’s support unleashing a flood of endorsements from many prominent Democrats across the country, Kamala Harris has emerged as the favorite to take his place as the party’s nominee for president. The campaign formally amended filings with the Federal Election Commission to rename its principal committee and declare Harris a candidate for president. Cooper previously waved off speculation that he might be on the shortlist for vice presidential nominees if Biden steps aside and Harris becomes the nominee. “Are you at least open to the possibility of being a running mate to Vice President Harris?,” Beshear was asked on MSNBC Monday morning. “I’m not going anywhere.”Whitmer, first elected governor in 2018, emerged as a prominent executive during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It’s very clear that Trump wants someone who can carry the movement on,” a person close to Trump told CNN said of the Vance selection. The two became close friends, a relationship that helped Vance earn Trump’s endorsement in a contested primary for an open Ohio Senate seat. “I totally transformed the federal judiciary,” Trump boasted at a summit hosted by the right-wing Moms for Liberty group last summer. “Many presidents never get the opportunity to appoint a Supreme Court justice. Rudy Giuliani speaks to members of the media where Florida Gov. A New York federal bankruptcy judge on Friday in a scathing ruling dismissed the Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection case of Rudy Giuliani, immediately exposing the newly disbarred former Trump lawyer to his creditors seeking repayments of his massive debts in other court venues. Those creditors include two Georgia election workers, to whom Giuliani owes $148 million in civil damages for defamation from a federal district court jury award in December. Freeman and Moss, unlike many other Giuliani creditors, supported the idea of dismissing the bankruptcy case in the Southern District of New York, which he filed days after losing the defamation judgment. In his ruling on Friday, Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane wrote that he "finds that dismissal of this bankruptcy case with a one year bar to refiling is in the best interests of creditors."

Researchers in South Korea say they’ve developed a new way to make lab-grown meat taste like the real deal. It may look like a transparent, bubble gum pink-colored disc, but scientists hope it could revolutionize the meat on people’s plates. Because the cultured meat is not yet edible, the researchers used an electronic nose, to test the aromas of the cultured meat, and see how they compare to conventional meat. Ron DeSantis banned the sale of lab-grown meat in the state in what he said was an effort to protect farmers and ranchers.
