A Film Festival in the Back of a Taxi
  + stars: | 2024-02-21 | by ( Bryn Stole | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Some of international cinema’s biggest names gathered on Tuesday night at the Berlin International Film Festival as the event honored Martin Scorsese with a lifetime achievement award. Irene Jaxtheimer, who runs a taxi company, passed around homemade popcorn. A generator outside the cab powered a modest television, a DVD player and a small electric heater. The unconventional screening, just outside a centerpiece event for one of Europe’s most prestigious film festivals, was part of the makeshift TaxiFilmFest. Running through Sunday, it is partly a protest over the miserable state of the taxi industry these days and partly a counterfestival to celebrate the taxi cab’s iconic place in the urban cultural landscape.

CNN —Grab your camera and slap on something flame resistant, it’s time to witness one of China’s most incredible displays – the fire dragon dance. Dragon dances have been documented at ceremonial events since the Han Dynasty (202 BCE to 220 CE), while fire dragon dances began appearing in records during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and in the Republican era (1912-1949). Some historians say fire dragon dances date back even further, to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). King cakes in New Orleans were once uniform and simple — a ring of braided lightly sweet brioche topped with purple, green and gold sugar. Some began filling their king cakes with cream cheese or fruit preserves. 5 Podcasts for Hollywood’s Awards Season
  + stars: | 2024-01-28 | by ( Emma Dibdin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +4 min
The 2024 awards season has felt unusually hectic so far, thanks to the strike-delayed Emmy Awards shifting from their usual fall airdate to January. But even when there’s nothing quite so unusual going on, the analysis here always makes awards season more interesting. Starter episode: “Oscar Voters, Start Your Engines”There’s a peculiar category of film that debuts with great fanfare, attracts plenty of awards buzz, and then fades from the cultural consciousness without a trace (and no awards). Not all of the films discussed on “This Had Oscar Buzz” fall into that bracket, but, as the title suggests, the focus is on the movies that had that buzzy aura around them, at least for a while. Starter episode: “Alexander (With David Sims)”Though not a traditional awards season podcast with predictions or play-by-play recaps, “The Town” is an invaluable resource for anyone hoping to understand the upheaval in Hollywood.

India's economy is in a "sweet spot," but growth in private consumption is expected to slow further, Radhika Rao, senior economist at DBS Bank said. India's GDP expanded by 7.6% during the July to September quarter as a result of stronger manufacturing activity and government spending, beating Reuters poll estimates of 6.8%. Even though it was lower than the 7.8% expansion during the April to June quarter, the country's growth is "one of the strongest in the region among major economies" and DBS expects the GDP to expand around 6.8% this year, Rao said on CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia" on Friday. She highlighted that the slowdown in consumption activity during the July to September quarter, which will likely continue through the winter, was owed to weak farm production in the summer months due to erratic weather. Although household consumption is likely to have picked up during the October to December quarter due to festivals including Diwali, it could fall again in the January to March quarter ahead of the 2024 general elections, Rao warned.

A video of Muslims gathered for a special outdoor prayer during Eid al-Adha in London has been misleadingly portrayed as a daily occurrence. What message do they want to send?”Reuters traced the video to at least July 2022 (archived), when it was shared as showing a special event for Eid al-Adha, a major Muslim holiday. Corroborating visuals of the same event were posted by Norbury Muslim Centre, which organised the outdoor prayer in 2022, as well as for 2021 and 2023. Eid al-Adha is one of the two most important festivals in the Islamic calendar and is marked with Muslims gathering in mosques or vast open sites to celebrate and pray. The video shows a special event for Eid al-Adha not something that is commonplace.
