Sen. Dianne Feinstein, whose trailblazing career embodied the rise of women in politics, the movement for gun safety and, finally, a determination to keep serving her California constituents despite illness and advancing age, has died. In the past two years, it was apparent Feinstein was having memory issues, and sometimes appeared befuddled on Capitol Hill. Tributes from lawmakers in both parties flowed Friday morning, as somber Senate lawmakers mourned the loss of their colleague. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, California Democrat and House speaker emeritus, sat in the Senate gallery, listening to the tearful tributes with Feinstein's daughter, Katherine. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Alaska Republican, lauded "the beauty of Dianne Feinstein" and chastised those who pressured Feinstein to step down, not appreciating the sacrifices the ailing California lawmaker made to serve her state.

The case for unionizing college sports teams is a precarious one, as athletes face significant barriers under federal labor law. The NCAA, along with the colleges that house sports teams, consider players amateurs and, therefore, not employees of their college. There is an NLRB case that an administrative law judge will hear this November that could open the floodgates for college teams to unionize. If the judge rules in favor of the National College Players Association, it would give both public and private college athletes the right to unionize under the NLRA, LeRoy said. Have other college sports teams tried to unionize before?

Age limits remain popular, and lawmakers have begun to wake up to the realities of gerontocracy. "I believe everyone deserves the kind of dignity to make their own choices," said Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania. He also opposes age limits, arguing that people should be able to "choose who they want, no matter how old they are." "Different people age differently, you know, somebody at a younger age may have more impacts due to aging than somebody at an older age. "I don't think it's a problem to be old, I think it's a problem to have a lack of diversity."

Republican Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah on Wednesday announced that he will not seek reelection next year. "While I'm not running for reelection, I'm not retiring from the fight," Romney, 76, said in a video posted to X, formerly Twitter. Romney said in August that he would reveal his decision on running for another Senate term by the fall. Romney joined six other Republican senators in 2021 who voted to convict Trump following his second impeachment for allegedly inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection. Trump, 77, ripped Romney in an all-caps social media post celebrating his decision to retire as "fantastic news for America."

A judge in San Francisco on Monday ordered the two factions of Senator Dianne Feinstein’s family fighting over the estate of her late husband, the wealthy financier Richard C. Blum, to try to settle the case through mediation. The order, which both sides agreed to, came as the lawyers in the case appeared in a courtroom for the first time after trading hostile accusations in legal filings over the summer. On one side is Senator Feinstein, who at 90 is in declining health and has faced questions about her ability to carry out the duties of her job, and her daughter, Katherine Feinstein, a former San Francisco judge. On the other side are the three daughters of Mr. Blum from a previous marriage, and his former business partners who are the trustees of his estate. In three separate lawsuits, Senator Feinstein, with her daughter serving as her legal representative, is fighting to sell a multimillion-dollar vacation home in Stinson Beach, north of San Francisco; seeking proceeds from the estate, including from Mr. Blum’s life insurance policy, to pay for her medical expenses; and asking the court to allow her to appoint Katherine Feinstein as a trustee of the estate.

Nancy Pelosi says she will run for another term in Congress. "Now more than ever our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery," Pelosi wrote in a message posted on her team's Twitter account. Pelosi, who is 83, won a special election in 1987 and has since won 18 full terms. Before she stepped down, Pelosi was the oldest House speaker in history. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi defended Senator Dianne Feinstein for remaining in office after a series of health issues, dismissing concerns about Ms. Feinstein’s continued ability to serve as a sexist double standard. Speaking to Politico for an article published Thursday, Ms. Pelosi stressed that the California senator, a longtime colleague and neighbor, was “doing OK” and minimized Ms. Feinstein’s recent fall, for which she was briefly hospitalized, as a “very little fall, it was like nothing.”She suggested that the criticisms of Ms. Feinstein, 90, and questions related to her eventual retirement were gendered. “It’s OK, you know, they can vote, and it’s all they need to do,” Ms. Pelosi, 83, said of the rationalizations offered for male elected officials who have faced age-related health concerns. “And then Dianne comes along and then they’re making such a fuss? It’s a guy thing, but that’s the way the world is.”

Feinstein affirmed statements about her daughter's power of attorney while speaking with a reporter. But earlier in the day, she told the reporter her daughter had "no permission to do anything." In August, it was reported that Sen. Dianne Feinstein had given power of attorney to her daughter, former San Francisco Superior Court judge Katherine Feinstein. Then, in a phone call the same day, she attempted to clarify her earlier statements about Katherine Feinstein's role in aiding her legal issues. It has nothing to do with the Senate or, frankly, anything else," the senator told The Chronicle.

WeWork's lease liabilities accounted for more than two-thirds of its operating expenses for the second quarter of this year, Tolley said. As of June 30, WeWork had 777 locations in 39 countries. The shuttering of select WeWork locations isn’t new. The process to renegotiate so many leases could take months, if not longer, he said. WeWork’s plans to renegotiate most of its leases also arrive at a time when demand for office space is weak overall.

Tucker Carlson also thinks Trump and Biden are too old to be president. "I agree 100%," Carlson told Portnoy in the latest episode of Carlson's Twitter show that was posted on Thursday night. Portnoy, who interviewed Trump at the White House during his presidency, said that while he thinks "both Trump and Biden are too old" that Biden is somehow worse. As for Trump, Portnoy argued that the former president should have participated in the first GOP presidential debate. Dianne Feinstein makes news these days for the health challenges that seem to keep mounting, but behind her story is another, which few pay attention to. When I watched the news clip of Senator Feinstein starting to give prepared comments on an $823 billion military budget, when all she needed to do was say “aye,” I felt the ache of familiarity. Senator Feinstein, we’ve been told, had recently recovered from encephalitis, which she got from shingles, and which can result in cognitive issues. They know the looks, the behavior; they live with all of it day after day, month after month. Let me tell you something about the fear of cognitive decline: It unleashes a torrent of emotions in caregivers.

On Wednesday, McConnell was speaking to reporters in Kentucky when he froze for more than 30 seconds. "I have informed Leader McConnell that he is medically clear to continue with his schedule as planned. Also in the Senate, California’s Dianne Feinstein, 90, has been ill and displayed apparent cognitive decline in public in recent months. But given that Biden, McConnell and Feinstein are public officials, voters are entitled to a high level of transparency. Biden, for instance, would be 86 by the time his second term ends, which represents his biggest vulnerability in the 2024 election. Remarkably, in an age where major questions divide on party lines, 69% of Democrats shared that view. Should Biden, if he wins a second term, experience a similar moment to McConnell, questions about the continuity of US leadership would reverberate around the world and offer openings for US adversaries.

The incident raised fresh questions among Republican and Democratic members of Congress about some of their aging colleagues. After being approached by a second person, McConnell resumed speaking but needed reporters' questions repeated to him and only answered two more questions. A McConnell aide said the senator would be consulting with a physician prior to his next public event. McConnell froze on Wednesday after being asked whether he intended to run again in 2026, when his six-year term is up.
