Read previewWhen former President Donald Trump spoke to the National Association of Black Journalists in July, he sparked outrage and said his opponent "happened to turn Black." In particular, their responses to questions about economic plans were hazy, all as the economy remains a key issue for many voters. Between questioning Harris' racial identity and whether she passed her bar exam —she did — Trump fielded questions about how he would support Black voters economically. When pressed on his exact plans, Trump redirected the conversation to President Joe Biden's debate performance, immigration policy, and plans for electric vehicles. A similar dynamic played out during the debate — Trump spewed racist rhetoric about Haitian migrants in Ohio, while Harris remained on message.

Four people were wounded at a Brooklyn train station Sunday when police officers shot at a man threatening them with a knife, authorities said. The bloody confrontation began when two officers confronted a man who entered the station without paying his fare, officials said. They followed him on to a train that had pulled into the station and fired two Tasers, but neither incapacitated the man, Maddrey said. Mayor Eric Adams visited the wounded officer in the hospital Sunday, ahead of a news conference addressing the shooting. In 2019, NYPD officers accidentally shot and killed two fellow officers while confronting crime suspects in separate on-duty incidents.

Attorneys for the US government and the widely popular social media app faced off on Monday in a federal appeals court as TikTok fights against a law that could soon see the platform banned in the country. Rozenshtein said that he believes the appeals court will rule "decisively" and "comprehensively" against TikTok. AdvertisementTikTok's lawyer argued the law 'imposes extraordinary speech prohibition'In his oral arguments on Monday, TikTok lawyer Andrew Pincus slammed the law as "unprecedented." AdvertisementThe panel of judges, at times, seemed skeptical of TikTok's arguments. After the appeals court issues its ruling, the case could end up before the Supreme Court where Rozenshtein also predicts TikTok will not fare well.

Read previewOffices have been the weak spot in the commercial real estate market since the pandemic gave rise to widespread remote work and caused companies to reassess how much space they need. The Federal Reserve's likely interest rate cut, expected at the end of its meeting on September 18, could give office owners some relief with lower interest rates when they refinance. But that doesn't mean they're in the clear, according to commercial real estate experts. Right now, most commercial real estate loans come from small, regional banks, but that could change. AdvertisementYet even with the weakness in the office market, lower interest rates are a net positive for the industry, economist Richard McGahey says.

Historically, a rate cut has been a signal for central banks in emerging markets, like India, to follow by easing monetary policy in their regions. The latest data shows that the inflation rate appears to be heading in the wrong direction in India. The headline inflation rate rose in August to 3.65% compared to 3.6% in the previous month. Instead, markets have simply hit snooze on a rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India for the moment. If there's no global recession, a risk-on sentiment will likely help push up emerging market equities in the medium term after the U.S. central bank cuts rates.

Support locally-owned businesses instead of visiting chain restaurants. Eat at a one-of-a-kind local spot instead of the chains you have back at home. Ashley ProbstTwo popular mainland chain restaurants, Chick-fil-A and Raising Cane's, opened on Maui this past summer — but from what I heard, some locals weren't pleased because these fast-food chains could take business away from locally owned businesses. To me, it seems like a waste to fly all the way out to Hawaii just to eat the same things you might have access to at home. Instead, I recommend supporting local businesses and taking the opportunity to enjoy authentic Pacific-island fare.

Airlines flooded the U.S. with flights this year, driving down fares particularly in the domestic market, where low-cost carriers concentrate, and weighing on carriers' revenue while costs have gone up. Spirit Airlines , JetBlue Airways and Frontier Airlines last posted annual profits in 2019, while larger carriers have returned to profitability. Now, some of those same airlines are dialing back their growth plans and deferring deliveries of new aircraft. Some airlines, like Frontier, have been active in sale-leasebacks, in which they sell planes to generate cash and lease them back.

A high school English teacher is suing a Wisconsin school district, alleging it did not renew his contract last year because he refused to use the preferred names of two transgender students. Argyle School District Superintendent Randy Refsland said in an email Tuesday night that he could not comment because the matter was being litigated in court. But after one of the students expressed unhappiness with the situation — the student's father was described as a fellow district teacher — the district demanded adherence to the policy of using students' preferred names and pronouns, according to the suit. Greul said that this fight over first names and pronouns will be crucial for "everyday Americans across the country." A 2022 report on pronouns by the Minnesota Department of Health says that the correct use of preferred pronouns "saves lives."

A portfolio of stocks booted from indexes would make an investor 74 times wealthier between 1991 and 2023, the research said. Authors Rob Arnott and Forrest Henslee announced the creation of NIXT, a fund that tracks deletions. The firm's founder and investing legend Rob Arnott and vice president Forrest Henslee wrote that stocks dropped by an index outperform for at least five years with remarkable persistence. After being deleted from an index, nixed stocks can outdo the market by an average of 5% a year. When an index decides to remove an asset, it's essentially creating excessive selling momentum, Arnott wrote.

The message to the airline industry: You've had a few too many screwups to be left to your own devices. Over the past couple of years, the Biden administration has introduced a slew of rules and services intended to make airline passengers' lives easier. The airline industry seems to be relatively on board with the refund idea. But there are plenty of other problems with the airline industry that need solving — some the government can take care of, and some the government is causing. Gallup polls suggest more Americans have a negative view of the airline industry than a positive one.
