The previous record from the 2014 to 2017 mass bleaching affected just below 66% of the world’s reef area. Triggered by heat stress in warm oceans, coral bleaching occurs when corals expel the colourful algae living in their tissues. A bleached coral is not dead, but ocean temperatures need to cool off for any hope of recovery. “We’ve never had a coral bleaching event this big before.”In just the last six weeks, bleaching has been confirmed in the waters of Palau, Guam and Israel. What are we going to do about it?” said Emily Darling, who leads the Wildlife Conservation Society’s global coral reef conservation programme.

Staple’s plight highlights the unusually difficult situation of young Americans trying to kick-start their careers, even as the broader US economy remains in good shape. Indeed, the job market overall remains in decent shape. A ‘victim of circumstance’Everyday Americans are always at the mercy of the economy — whether it’s navigating difficulties such as high inflation and a recession, or a red-hot job market that benefits workers. Having a tough time landing that first job, in part because of broader economic forces, can have lasting consequences. “For young workers, their first few years out of school are very formative for their careers.

Genaro Garcia Luna, who for several years led Mexico’s fight against the country’s violent drug trade, was sentenced on Wednesday to more than 38 years in U.S. prison for accepting bribes from the cartels he was supposed to fight. In announcing the 460-month sentence, Cogan said Garcia Luna should have “some light at the end of the tunnel,” crediting him for his work teaching fellow inmates at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center. But the judge said Garcia Luna lived a “double life,” with the harm he caused outweighing his good deeds. Garcia Luna served as Mexico’s public security minister from 2006 to 2012. Before learning the sentence, Garcia Luna said in court that Mexico’s government and criminal groups had smeared him.

CNN —After spending several years building a life he loved in San Francisco, Jason Bennett, originally from the Bay Area, had every intention of remaining in the Californian city for good. At the same time, he realized that he was mostly returning to San Francisco because he felt that was what was expected of him. “The (Colombian) culture is so kind, they don’t really like to say, ‘No,’” he says. “And I don’t ever want to come across as like I’m shading San Francisco or the United States in general. La Niña isn’t here yet, but has a 60% chance of emerging through November, according to the Climate Prediction Center. While it’s still unclear just how strong La Niña will get, current forecasts favor a weaker one. That outlook could be change when the center releases its latest forecast on Thursday based on trends toward a weaker La Niña. CNN WeatherThis is due to the behavior of the jet stream — essentially a river of air that storms flow through — which often shifts north during a La Niña winter. CNN —Drought is now so bad in parts of southern Africa that governments say they must kill hundreds of their most captivating, majestic wild animals to feed desperately hungry people. In August, Namibia announced it had embarked on a cull of 723 animals, including 83 elephants, 30 hippos and 300 zebras. Crops have failed, livestock has died and nearly 70 million people are desperately in need of food. They say it’s the opposite: reducing numbers will help protect remaining animals as the drought shrinks food and water resources. Both Namibia and Zimbabwe say professional hunters will ensure entire groups are killed to prevent this.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Bracing itself for a retaliatory strike for last week’s ballistic missile attack, Iran has been urging its Arab neighbors not to allow Israel to use their airspace as part of any potential attack, two diplomats from Gulf nations told NBC News Friday. Israel has vowed to respond to the strikes and while the nature and timing of the attack remain unclear, Iran warned countries that do help Israel in any way could potentially become part of a war, one of the diplomats said. His death came days after several Hezbollah leaders were killed by exploding pagers and walkie-talkies, an attack which Israel was widely believed to have been behind. Both militant groups are backed by Tehran and Pezeshkian has portrayed Iran as “exercising restraint” because it waited for two months after Haniyeh's death before launching the attack on Israel. BOSTON — Luis Tiant, the charismatic Cuban with a horseshoe mustache and mesmerizing windup who pitched the Red Sox to the brink of a World Series championship and himself to the doorstep of the Hall of Fame, has died. Major League Baseball announced his death in a post on X on Tuesday, and the Red Sox confirmed that he died at his home in Maine. He had 187 complete games and 47 shutouts in a 19-year career spent mostly with Cleveland and Boston. His death comes one week after that of all-time baseball hits leader Pete Rose, whose Cincinnati Reds faced Tiant’s Red Sox in the 1975 World Series — still considered one of the greatest in baseball history. After his retirement, Tiant was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame but never made the national shrine in Cooperstown, New York, receiving a high of 30.9% of the votes in 1988, his first year on the ballot.
