NICE, France Associated Press —At least eight people died during a failed attempt to cross the English Channel from northern France, French maritime authorities said Sunday. At least 46 migrants had died while trying to cross to the UK this year, said Billant, the Pas-de-Calais prefect. At least 137,563 people have reached the United Kingdom after crossing the Channel from France since 2018, according to UK Home Office figures. Other surveillance and rescue operations are underway Sunday along the entire Pas-de-Calais coast amid stormy weather conditions and agitated sea, French maritime authorities said. They warned anyone who tries to cross the Channel on flimsy and overloaded boats and in often difficult weather conditions of “significant risks.”In July, four migrants died while attempting the crossing on an inflatable boat that capsized and punctured.

CNN —The Israeli military says that three Israeli hostages whose bodies were recovered from Gaza in December were “most likely” killed as a result of an Israeli airstrike. The hostages were two soldiers - Corporal Nick Beiser and Sergeant Ron Sherman – and and civilian man, Eliya Toledano. “The investigation shows that the three hostages were held in the tunnel complex where Andor operated. The bodies of the three hostages were retrieved from the tunnel where Andor had been staying on December 14. Later that month Hamas claimed that the three hostages were “killed by IDF weapons.”A total of 101 hostages are still being held in Gaza, according to the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Read previewEarlier this month, a spokesperson for Turkey's ruling AK Party said that a process was "underway" for Turkey to join the BRICS group of emerging-market nations. He now appears to be seeking to maintain what experts have dubbed a "balancing act" between its relations with the West, Russia, and China. "Even if Turkey does join BRICS, I do not believe it is going to lead to a fundamental redefinition of Turkey's relationship with the West." Advertisement"Understanding and collaborating with Turkey's perspective can enhance US and NATO relations with Turkey, irrespective of potential administrative changes in Ankara," Can wrote in an article for the Wilson Center. For its part, the US has remained relatively quiet following the news that Turkey's BRICS ambitions may be inching forward, which Aydintaşbaş said was likely a savvy move aimed at avoiding a public dispute.

The Dutch engineer wants to transform a huge stretch of inhospitable desert into green, fertile land teeming with wildlife. “The only holistic way out of this situation is with large-scale ecological regeneration”So-called desert regreening projects are not new, and this is one of a number around the world seeking to transform arid landscapes. Costfoto/NurPhoto/Getty ImagesFor van der Hoeven, it was further proof his plan could work. “The scale reaches a level that helps prove that restoration can be done on a planetary scale.”It would add to other huge desert regreening projects also underway. The poliovirus that paralyzed a child in Gaza, the first case in the region in 25 years, has traveled a long path. It most likely arose in Nigeria and made its way to Chad, where it was first detected in 2019, according to genetic analysis. This journey was the consequence of a fateful decision by global health organizations to pare down the oral polio vaccine in 2016. Instead, the change has led to outbreaks of polio in dozens of countries and has paralyzed more than 3,300 children. A formal evaluation, commissioned by the global polio eradication program and led by two independent experts, was unflinching in its assessment: “The switch was an unqualified failure.”

In a detail not previously shared, the senior official said that of the 18 paragraphs in the agreement, 14 were finished and agreed to. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, left, meets with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi at the Plaza Hotel in New York, Sept. 19, 2016. Democrats on the House Oversight Committee asked former President Donald Trump to show proof that he never received any money from Egypt, following a recent report on a nearly $10 million withdrawal from the nation's state-run bank days before Trump became president in 2017. The Democrats in a letter to Trump on Tuesday said they were looking into allegations that Trump took a "cash bribe" from Egypt's president, and that former Attorney General Bill Barr and others blocked a Department of Justice probe into that alleged bribe. Asked about the letter, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung told CNBC in an email, "This is textbook Fake News." The discovery of that withdrawal appeared to bolster the claim that el-Sissi sought to give Trump money.

The slender horns of the Arabian oryx, also known as the “white oryx” because of its luminous white coat, are said to be an inspiration for tales of the mythical unicorn. This kickstarted conservation efforts, which involved breeding the species in captivity and reintroducing it into the wild. Hamas said it would head to Cairo on Saturday to meet with mediators ahead of a new round of Gaza cease-fire talks, as the United States, Qatar and Egypt push to reach an agreement they hope can stave off the growing threat of regional war. On Friday, the Israeli military announced that at least one soldier had been killed and several others were wounded in fighting in central Gaza. While U.S. officials have insisted there is progress in negotiations, the main warring parties, Israel and Hamas, have been far more pessimistic in their assessment.
