Here the profiles of some of the key figures:ECONOMY MINISTERGiancarlo Giorgetti, 55, is a veteran political wheeler-dealer viewed as a moderate and relatively pro-European member of his right-wing League party. REUTERS/Yves Herman Read MoreThe most contentious issue facing the leaders is whether and how to cap gas prices. The leaders will also discuss emergency spending to cushion their economies and 450 million citizens from the energy crunch. Given EU countries' diverse energy mix and interests, the meeting risks falling short on short-term action to tackle high energy prices ahead of winter. EU energy ministers meet again next week and aim to agree on joint crisis measures in November.
The US called out Hungary stance on the invasion of Ukraine, which has been softer than many nations. The US embassy reminded the EU and NATO member that the US and Hungary are supposed to be allies. Hungary has been the EU member least critical of Russia since it invaded Ukraine in February. In response to the sanctions, Russia is threatening to cut off gas supplies. The campaign also involved a government poster that describes EU sanctions as bombs falling on Hungary.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren took to Twitter Thursday to call for "uniform standards" for device chargers. Ed Markey and Bernie Sanders joined Warren in a letter to Department of Commerce on the issue. The EU has already approved a plan for mobile devices to be compatible with USB-C charger. In a tweet posted Thursday, Warren wrote that potential legislation to streamline chargers would create "less expense, less hassle, and less waste." The letter also highlights that chargers account for 11,000 tons of e-waste annually.
The Russia-Ukraine war triggered a crackdown on "golden passport" schemes across Europe. Malta is the only EU country with a golden passport program and is under pressure to shut it down. In recent years, countries including Bulgaria and Cyprus have shut down their golden passport programs following accusations of corruption and pressure from the European Union. The European parliament estimates that Russian nationals account for about half of approved golden passport applications in the EU. "The concern is that unsavory and possibly criminal individuals will secure EU passports, which then entitles them to mobility and settlement rights."
