Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, of the Netherlands, drives past the Sphere during the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix auto race, Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023, in Las Vegas. Max Verstappen hated everything about the Las Vegas Grand Prix from the moment he arrived in Sin City. "Viva Las Vegas! Viva Las Vegas!" Verstappen had slammed Saturday night's spectacle at every chance, yet raced in an Elvis-inspired firesuit and took the victory on the famed Las Vegas Strip.

Dolly Parton ‘Rockstar’ album takeaways

CNN —It’s already a vital American truth that Dolly Parton is a national treasure, and has been for decades. From there, Parton saw a challenge to become a rockstar in her own right, and after her husband suggested she do a rock album, she embarked on the journey, culminating with Friday’s release of her appropriately titled forty-ninth (!!) Cover of "Rockstar" by Dolly Parton. Butterfly Records/APThe second track is also an original song, “World on Fire,” which dutifully tries to ruffle some feathers (like a rockstar would) by commenting on the state of the world today. CNN —As Las Vegas gears up to stage its first Formula One Grand Prix in more than 40 years, three-time world champion Max Verstappen appears unenthused by the prospect of racing in the glitzy host city. But Red Bull driver Verstappen, who wrapped up his most recent world title last month, isn’t particularly enamored by the theater atmosphere on display in Las Vegas. Not all the drivers, who were introduced to the crowd via ascending and descending platforms during the opening ceremony, necessarily shared Verstappen’s view. “Of course, there has been a lot of show already with the opening ceremony. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Last year, Dolly Parton was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame — against her wishes. Now, almost exactly a year later, she's releasing her first rock ‘n’ roll album, appropriately titled “Rockstar," on Friday. Parton once thought she'd record a “Linda Ronstadt-type rock album,” but had felt she was getting too old. “I care about people, human suffering and all of that.”“World On Fire,” she says, was written after she thought the album was completed. Why do we buy merch, or shy away from it? What does the merch you wear say about who you are, what you believe in? Carrying the bag in your own city seemed too boosterish, too earnest for a New Yorker, whereas outside the city, the local merch telegraphs your hometown pride and N.Y.C. Once you leave the place, the merch becomes a souvenir, a nostalgic keepsake. Debating the laws of merch is a diversion, an amusing exercise in questioning our own pieties.

But by then she was well positioned to occupy the rarefied worlds of alternative film, fashion and music, insulated from snarky criticism and the crassness of commercial demands. I don’t see the presence of these rarefied worlds — either in her biography or as depicted on the screen — as a shortcoming. Arguably, Ms. Coppola is exceptional as an artist because nobody among her contemporaries succeeds in preserving that pristine air the way she does, especially when used to embody an explicitly feminine worldview. There may be a rebelliousness in this stillness, and a romance — of taking up things and pondering them in your heart. But on the most basic level, what Ms. Hirschberg described as a strength is a tendency to abstain, to not do something — a tendency shared by many of Ms. Coppola’s protagonists.

Nov 7 (Reuters) - Democrats and abortion rights advocates notched a string of electoral victories on Tuesday, including in conservative Ohio and Kentucky, an early signal that reproductive rights remain a potent issue for Democrats ahead of the 2024 presidential race. In Ohio, a state that voted for Republican Donald Trump by 8 percentage points in the 2020 presidential election, voters approved a constitutional amendment guaranteeing abortion rights, Edison Research projected. He also ran on protecting abortion rights, though he is powerless to overturn the state's near-total ban. Last year, abortion rights advocacy groups scored a series of victories by placing abortion-related referendums on the ballot, including in conservative states. Anti-abortion forces campaigned against the Ohio amendment as too extreme, while abortion rights groups warned that rejecting it would pave the way for a stringent ban to take effect.

OHIO ABORTION RIGHTSOhioans voted to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, Edison Research projected, which will render moot a six-week abortion limit signed into law by Republican Governor Mike DeWine. The ban is currently on hold pending litigation at the conservative state Supreme Court. The success of Ohio's ballot measure initiative, which put the question of abortion rights to voters directly, adds to a string of ballot measure victories for abortion rights supporters since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. PENNSYLVANIA SUPREME COURTThe race for a new state Supreme Court justice will not alter the liberal tilt of Pennsylvania's highest court but could have future implications for abortion rights and election laws in the state. Democrats have a 4-2 majority in the partisan state court, with one vacant seat to be filled in this election.

Another off-year election, another good night for Democrats – a rejoinder to a spate of recent polls showing alarming 2024 prospects for President Joe Biden. In Election Day’s marquee contests – the Kentucky gubernatorial race, Virginia’s legislative elections and a pro-abortion-rights ballot measure in Ohio – Democrats notched victories. Beyond that, “the real test was Trump’s ability to move voters in a state race,” Cross says. Tate Reeves won a second term – though the race was relatively close for a deep red state. In the secretary of state race, incumbent Michael Watson, a Republican, outran Reeves by more than 8 points in defeating Democrat Ty Pinkins.

What’s at Stake in Today’s Elections
  + stars: | 2023-11-07 | by ( Matthew Cullen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
And even though we’re in what political analysts call an off-year — with neither a presidential election nor midterm congressional elections — a steady stream of voters still showed up at polling stations. Two governorships are at stake in competitive races in typically Republican southern states. In Ohio, voters will decide whether to enshrine the right to abortion in the state’s Constitution and whether to legalize marijuana for recreational use. Today’s elections, which also include all 140 Virginia legislative contests and a race to fill a Pennsylvania Supreme Court seat, will probably be dissected for hints about 2024. The results may determine whether Democrats find some reassurances about their approach to key issues like abortion, which has been a bright spot for their party.

Abortion (literally) on the ballot in OhioThe 2022 midterm elections showed that when abortion rights are on the ballot, voters overwhelmingly favored protecting or expanding access. This is the only abortion rights ballot initiative before voters this year. Though not explicitly on the ballot, abortion has featured prominently in the campaign, with Beshear arguing that Cameron will double down on the commonwealth’s already harsh restrictions.
