Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —In the city of Kherson, southern Ukraine, civilians have started to hope for heavy rain – the only weather conditions that prevent Russian drones from flying overhead, they say. Today, the threat of occupation still looms just across the river, where Russian military positions are literally within sight. Difficult to combatThe frequency of the attacks and the drones’ small size make them difficult for Ukrainian forces to thwart. Russia has been repeatedly accused of targeting Ukrainian civilians by Kyiv, its Western allies, the International Criminal Court and the United Nations. On Monday, an ambulance was hit in a Russian drone strike on an urban area of Kherson, injuring two paramedics.

Wild Hornets did not respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider. Russia announced in September that it was planning to increase drone production by 10 times, putting it at 1.4 million drones yearly. Ukraine, on the other hand, said it can now make 4 million drones per year. Its president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said in October that local defense firms were already contracted to build 1.5 million drones, but did not say what kind.

A DJI Inspire 1 Pro drone is flown during a demonstration at the SZ DJI Technology Co. headquarters in Shenzhen, China, on Wednesday, April 20, 2016. China has unveiled a set of export control regulations for so-called dual-use items, which refer to goods or technologies that can be used for civilian as well as military purposes, ahead of President Xi Jinping's trip to Russia. The regulations come amid intensified U.S. sanctions targeting Chinese companies which the U.S. deems have been supplying dual-use goods, such as drones, to aid Russia's war effort in Ukraine. China has attempted to show that "it is following similar norms as other nations in terms of how it regulates trade in dual-use goods," he added. Alicia Garcia-Herrero, chief economist for Asia-Pacific at Natixis, however, suggested that Russia will likely be exempted from the possible export controls.

Russia is unlikely to offer military intervention against Israel on behalf of the Iranians, Saab said, given it is already "too bogged down in Ukraine." In return for Iran's support, Russia has bolstered Iran's military capabilities in several areas, they noted: "Iran has made notable progress in acquiring advanced conventional weaponry from Russia, allowing it to achieve some of its defense officials' long-standing goals. Iranian protesters shout anti-Israeli slogans while burning an Israeli flag in a celebration for Iran's missile attack against Israel, in Tehran, Iran, on October 1, 2024. That shared antipathy toward the U.S. and desire to create a "new world order" are what largely binds Iran and Russia. Russia cannot — and will not — save Iran in its confrontation with Israel and the United States," he noted.

Scores of people have been killed in Israeli strikes in northern Gaza this weekend, according to local officials, with the bloodshed in the enclave and continued attacks in Lebanon dimming hopes that the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar might breathe new life into cease-fire talks that have been stalled for months. The Israeli security cabinet is expected to hold a meeting Sunday afternoon to discuss plans for a strike on Iran, an Israeli official told NBC News. In northern Gaza, the local health ministry on Sunday said at least 87 people were killed, with more than 40 others injured, in Israeli strikes on residential areas in Beit Lahia on Saturday. Videos and photos emerging out of northern Gaza showed devastating scenes. Israeli forces on Sunday continued operations in Gaza and in Lebanon, with the IDF saying troops remained active across the northern, southern and central ares of the Strip.

Or perhaps it shows a defiant hero who is staring the enemy in the eye while fighting till the bitter end. When the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the killing of Yahya Sinwar last week, they released several photos and a video showing the Hamas leader during his last moments alive and after his death. Internationally, it is under pressure over the mounting Palestinian death toll and horrific humanitarian situation in the strip. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic spokesperson, said the IDF found huge sums of money, food and water in Sinwar’s hideouts. But Siegal said that there was likely another reason for the IDF releasing the video showing Sinwar all alone at the end.

Israel struck what it said were Hezbollah arms facilities in southern Beirut on Saturday after the Lebanese armed group fired rockets into northern Israel and a spokesman said a drone was launched at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's holiday home. On Saturday, Israeli planes dropped leaflets over southern Gaza with a picture of Sinwar and the message: "Hamas will no longer rule Gaza". In Beirut's southern suburbs, Israel carried out heavy strikes on several locations, leaving thick plumes of smoke hanging over the city into the evening. The strikes targeted "a number of Hezbollah weapons storage facilities and a Hezbollah intelligence headquarters command center", Israel's military said. The United States would like to see Israel scale back some of its strikes in and around Beirut, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said.

Advanced air defenses and anti-ship cruise missiles may also be on the table. Iran has ordered Su-35 fighters and also wants S-400 Triumf air defenses to, among other things, face Israel's superior missiles and air force. If all these deals do go forward, they would enhance the military capabilities of Iran and its allied militias. While the type of equipment was not specified, it could be the S-400 Iran has long sought. Iran is seeking Russia's S-400 air defenses.

Israeli and US officials often had some sense of the general area where Sinwar was hiding over the long months. The only way in is with an Israeli military escort, which means reporters are only allowed to see what Israel wants them to see. In the moments before his death — which Israeli officials have said was caused by a bullet to the head — Israeli troops flew a drone into the heavily damaged building where he had fled. A video from the drone, released by the Israeli military, offers a silent account of his final moments. To the end, US intelligence officials believed that Sinwar was unconcerned with his own mortality, and determined to continue the fight.

Sirens wailed Saturday morning in Israel, warning of incoming fire from Lebanon, including a drone launched toward Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's house in Caesarea, the Israeli government said. Meanwhile, in Gaza, more than 50 people, including children, have been killed in several Israeli strikes, in less than 24 hours, according to hospital officials and an Associated Press reporter. Israel's emergency services said a 50-year-old man was killed after being hit by shrapnel while sitting in his car in northern Israel. Only 13 years ago, the world learned of what were Muammar Gaddafi's last few moments through shaky video filmed on cellphones. Small drones are a critical feature of combat in Ukraine, where they've been used for battlefield observation and attack. The hovering quality of the Sinwar video indicates it was likely filmed by a quadcopter. Nonetheless, technological advances mean that drones watching the battlefield will be a ubiquitous feature of future wars, a looming threat to ground troops and fleeing leaders.

But in an announcement Thursday, the US Treasury Department accused the Chinese firms of direct involvement in arms supplies to Moscow. The Chinese companies had collaborated with Russian defense firms in the production of Moscow’s “Garpiya series” long-range unmanned aerial vehicles, the department said in a statement. “The Garpiya has been deployed by Russia in its brutal war against Ukraine, destroying critical infrastructure and causing mass casualties,” it said. “We have seen for some time Chinese companies providing components to Russian companies that Russian companies then use to turn into machinery, weapons, other components that Russia could use in its war,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters Thursday. Israel killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, the architect of the October 7 terrorist attacks. AdvertisementAfter a yearlong war against Hamas that reduced much of Gaza to ruins, Israel on Wednesday killed its top target: the Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. Israel's military persisted, using heavy weapons, including 2,000-pound bunker-buster bombs, to target areas under Gaza where Sinwar and other Hamas leaders could have been hiding. During that time, Israel killed several Hamas leaders, including Mohammad Deif in Gaza, and Ismail Haniyeh in an audacious explosives attack in Tehran, Iran. And it could bring the devastating war in Gaza closer to an end, experts say – if Israel and its allies can seize the opportunity. Before the war, power in Hamas was decentralized – with Gaza political chief Sinwar just one of many leaders, Chorev said. Shira Efron, a senior director of policy research at the Diane and Guilford Glazer Foundation said Sinwar’s killing gives Netanyahu the chance to claim a victory. Sinwar’s killing could also pave the way for a hostage and ceasefire agreement, since he was believed to be one of the main blockers of a deal. An independent, bipartisan review identified “numerous mistakes” by the U.S. Secret Service and “specific failures and breakdowns” that enabled the assassination attempt that injured former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July. “The Secret Service as an agency requires fundamental reform to carry out its mission," the members added. "Without that reform, the Independent Review Panel believes another Butler can and will happen again.”The Secret Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the review. “The increasing demand placed on the agency during this dynamic threat environment has resulted in our people being pushed to the limit,” said Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the Secret Service. The group said it identified “deep flaws in the Secret Service, including some that appear to be systemic or cultural,” including a “lack of critical thinking among Secret Service personnel” and agents’ unwillingness to “speak up” regarding potential threats.

CNN —The Israeli military confirmed on Thursday that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, believed by Israel to be chief architect of the militant group’s deadly October 7, 2023, terror attack that set off the war in Gaza, had been killed in battle. After completing the process of identifying the body, it can be confirmed that Yahya Sinwar was eliminated.”Two Israeli sources familiar with the matter told CNN earlier that Israeli forces encountered Sinwar during a routine military operation. Sinwar, pictured center, attends the funeral of a senior Hamas militant alongside Ismail Haniyeh in Gaza City in 2017. A longtime figure in the Islamist Palestinian group, Sinwar was responsible for building up Hamas’ military wing before forging important new ties with regional Arab powers as the group’s civilian and political leader.
