New York CNN —Boeing CEO David Calhoun’s Wednesday was decidedly a mixed bag: The Federal Aviation Administration finally approved a set of inspection criteria for the 171 grounded 737 Max 9 planes that, if followed, could return the aircraft to service. And the FAA said it would not grant any production expansion of the 737 Max lineup while its safety probe of Boeing continues. “We fly safe planes,” Calhoun said to reporters assembled on Capitol Hill. A week earlier, Calhoun acknowledged the company made a “mistake” at a staff-wide safety meeting, but he did not specify what that mistake was. Two Max variants — the Max 7 and the Max 10 — are still awaiting approval to begin carrying passengers.

CNN —Secretary of State Antony Blinken was forced to change planes to return to Washington from Davos after his plane suffered what the traveling press was told was a critical failure related to an oxygen leak. CNN —The Federal Aviation Administration said on Friday that after reviewing Boeing’s instructions for inspecting grounded 737 Max 9 planes, it has decided to seek more information before allowing the plan to proceed. One hundred and seventy-one of the planes remain grounded in the United States as airlines Alaska and United await updated emergency inspection guidance from the FAA. The FAA said it plans to collect data from the inspection of 40 of the planes using Boeing’s procedures before deciding whether the process will work for the rest of the grounded planes. Boeing is holding 85 Max planes in storage awaiting delivery to Chinese carriers, for which the planes were even painted years ago. Over the next two decades, Boeing projects, China will account for 20 percent of global airplane demand. Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Stan Deal says 2023 has been a year of orders for widebody aircraft with the U.S. manufacturer expecting to announce more deals at this week's Dubai Airshow. His comments come after reports that Boeing and Emirates are close to agreeing a major order of 777 jets, adding to the Emirati flag carrier's existing order backlog of 155 777X aircraft from Boeing. "We've seen strong recovery in the narrow-body ordering in 2022 and now in 2023 it seems to be the year of widebody orders, and I suspect as you see this show unfold, you're going to see many more widebody orders for the industry," Deal, who is also the executive vice president of Boeing, told CNBC's Dan Murphy. Earlier this year, Saudi Arabian flag carrier Saudia and the newly-established Riyadh Air each logged orders for 39 of Boeing's 787 Dreamliner jets, and Deal believes demand from the Gulf will continue to grow rapidly.
