CNN —Israel’s cabinet unanimously voted to sanction the nation’s oldest newspaper, Haaretz, on Sunday citing its critical coverage of the war following the October 7 Hamas attacks and comments by the outlet’s publisher calling for sanctions on senior government officials. The proposal, put forward by communications minister Shlomo Kar’i, will end government advertising in the newspaper and cancel all subscriptions for state employees and employees of state-owned companies. It dismisses the costs of both sides for defending the settlements while fighting the Palestinian freedom fighters that Israel calls terrorists,” he reportedly said. Following widespread criticism of the comments in Israel, Schocken clarified his comments saying that he did not believe Hamas militants were freedom fighters. Haaretz slammed the move in a statement on Sunday, calling it “another step in Netanyahu’s journey to dismantle Israeli democracy.”“Like his friends Putin, Erdoğan, and Orbán, Netanyahu is trying to silence a critical, independent newspaper,” the statement said.

There's one key reason the U.S. stock market rallied after this month's presidential election, and it wasn't necessarily because of the outcome, according to Dan Clifton of Strategas. "What we saw was that the market was pricing in a 50-50 election. [Investors] didn't know who was going to win," Clifton, the firm's head of Washington policy research, told CNBC's Dominic Chu in this special Pro Talks discussion available to all readers. Instead, "we had it very clear … we knew [President-elect Donald Trump] was going to win," he said. (Pro subscribers can watch the full interview here .)

In July 2023, Mace described herself as “pro-transgender rights” and voiced support for children exploring their identities, such as by changing pronouns, hairstyles or clothing. Just a month after describing herself as “pro-transgender rights” and supporting children exploring their identities, Mace spoke out against transgender women competing in women’s sports. In texts with CNN, Mace reiterated her past support for LGBTQ rights, including voting for same-sex marriage. Mace, however, also described transgender individuals as needing to “seek help.”“Voted for gay marriage twice. “I strongly support LGBTQ rights and equality,” she said at the time.

Colleges and universities have tightened rules around protests, locked campus gates and handed down stricter punishments after the disruptions of pro-Palestinian demonstrations and encampments last spring. Universities have seen just under 950 protest events this semester so far, compared to 3,000 last semester, according to a log at the Nonviolent Action Lab at Harvard University’s Ash Center. About 50 people have been arrested so far this school year at protests on higher education campuses, according to numbers gathered by The New York Times, compared to over 3,000 last semester. When students have protested this fall, administrators have often enforced — to the letter — new rules created in response to last spring’s unrest. The moves have created scenes that would have been hard to imagine previously, particularly at universities that once celebrated their history of student activism.

Both cases against Mr. Trump — for his attempt to overturn the 2020 election and his later hoarding of classified government documents and obstruction of efforts to retrieve them — were short-circuited by the fact that he won the 2024 election before they could be definitively resolved. Jack Smith, the special counsel who brought both cases against Mr. Trump, asked courts on Monday to shut them down. The result is not just that Mr. Trump appears set to escape any criminal accountability for his actions. (Mr. Smith left the door open to, in theory, refiling the charges after Mr. Trump leaves office, but the statute of limitations is likely to have run by then.) It also means that two open constitutional questions the cases have raised appear likely to go without definitive answers as Mr. Trump takes office.

The storm will roll through parts of the Midwest and South Wednesday night and spread across the East on Thanksgiving Day. Scenario one: A stronger, faster stormThe first scenario would have a storm develop in the Plains Wednesday and strengthen as it heads east. CNN WeatherBut how close to the coast the storm lingers once it reaches the Atlantic Friday will affect post-holiday travel. Wet weather would be minimal for these areas if the storm tracks farther away from the coast Friday. New York CNN —Iced coffee just isn’t the same when you make it at home. This year, Keurig Dr Pepper launched a machine that is dedicated to iced coffee, advertising a drink “as cold as the coffee shops” in three minutes or less for $199. But there’s science behind why iced coffee is so much better at coffee shops, and current single-serve espresso machine innovations don’t meet that quality despite their marketing. And iced coffee mania comes at a time when coffee production is at risk of surging prices as factors like climate change could slash the global supply. Almost a quarter of Americans enjoy their coffee cold, according to this fall’s National Coffee Data Trends report.

This is one of several misconceptions about nuclear energy: America’s nuclear waste is not buried in a mountain or tucked at the bottom of a deep, rocky cavern. That is almost entirely because Americans are by and large opposed to living anywhere near nuclear waste, and suspicious of governments’ or utilities’ attempts to assuage nuclear fears. The byproduct of nuclear energy is still associated with atomic bombs or nuclear meltdowns. On the threshold of America’s nuclear energy renaissance, federal officials are pleading with communities to say yes to storing spent fuel. No state has yet raised its hand to store the country’s nuclear energy waste, despite the lucrative deals it could foment.

Oil prices retreated on Monday following 6% gains last week, but remained near two-week highs as geopolitical tensions grew between Western powers and major oil producers Russia and Iran, raising risks of supply disruption. "Oil prices are starting the new week with some slight cool-off as market participants await more cues from geopolitical developments and the Fed's policy outlook to set the tone," said Yeap Jun Rong, market strategist at IG. "Tensions between Ukraine and Russia have edged up a notch lately, leading to some pricing for the risks of a wider escalation potentially impacting oil supplies." Enforced sanctions could sideline about 1 million barrels per day of Iran's oil exports, about 1% of global oil supply, he said. Investors were also focused on rising crude oil demand at China and India, the world's top and third-largest importers, respectively.

Gabbard and another contentious Trump pick — Pete Hegseth, who has been tapped to lead the Defense Department — came under sharpened scrutiny Sunday as the spotlight shifted from Matt Gaetz, Trump’s toppled choice to be attorney general. Trump’s pick of Hegseth is also facing uncertainty after the release last week of a 2017 police report detailing an alleged sexual assault in California. But the withdrawal of Gaetz — who was already widely disliked in Congress — may leave senators feeling they owe the president-elect on his other highly controversial choices. Trump’s new selection for attorney general, Pam Bondi, is meanwhile being welcomed by many Republicans, suggesting she’ll have an easier path to confirmation than Gaetz. But that would still leave the question of who is acceptable to Trump while being confirmable in the Senate.

There have been at least 20 marriages between couples who met at the club, according to founder Tim Navin-Jones. As the endless scrolling through dating apps has become a feat of endurance, running clubs such as this one have developed a reputation for romance. When you think of running, the idea of romance may be the furthest thing from your mind. While traditional sports clubs are seeing their numbers decline, “informal groups” such as running clubs are seeing their numbers boom, Bekhuis said. Dominic Gwinn | Afp | Getty ImagesFinancial markets on Monday welcomed President-elect Donald Trump's pick for U.S. Treasury secretary, with currencies across the globe rallying on hopes that hedge fund manager Scott Bessent can take some of the sting out of Trump's more extreme economic views. "Trump's pick for Treasury Secretary has swelled investor sentiment further with stocks on Wall Street looking set for another flurry of gains," Susannah Streeter, head of money and markets at Hargreaves Lansdown, said in a research note. While many economists are skeptical about the effectiveness of tariffs, Bessent has defended them as "a useful tool for achieving the president's foreign policy objectives." Some strategists expect Trump's Treasury chief pick to be welcomed as good news for Asian currencies over the coming months.

But instead of going down on the ball and ending the game, Juanyeh Thomas returned the kick for a touchdown. Quarterback Cooper Rush, however, had his best game of the season, completing 24 of 32 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns — his first two-touchdown game of the season. "We didn’t play our best. Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, D-Del., the first openly transgender person elected to serve in Congress, on Sunday called House Republicans’ moves to ban her from using women’s bathrooms in the Capitol “mean-spirited” and an “attempt to misdirect” from other policy priorities. [END TAPE]KRISTEN WELKER:According to the Washington Post, President-elect Trump plans to fire the team that worked with the special counsel. So, I think President Trump is picking reformers for these Cabinet positions. After the midterms Joe Biden said that there was no way President Trump would ever be back in the White House. Government officials met with tribal leaders in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday to try to mediate a ceasefire between rival sectarian groups after days of clashes that have killed at least 68 people and injured dozens. The clashes started after gunmen attacked convoys of civilian vehicles on Thursday, killing at least 40, mostly Shi’ite Muslims. That sparked retaliatory attacks against Sunni residents and there have been pitched battles between armed groups from both sides. Armed Shi’ite and Sunni Muslims have engaged in tribal and sectarian rivalry for decades over a land dispute in Kurram district near the Afghanistan border. The delegation met with Shi’ite leaders and stayed overnight to meet with Sunni leaders on Sunday to try to broker a ceasefire deal and then move to resolve the matter, he said in a statement.

You may not know it by looking at sticker prices in grocery aisles, but Thanksgiving dinner is more affordable than it has been in years. “If your dollar had the same overall purchasing power as a consumer in 1984 … this would be the least expensive Thanksgiving meal in the 39-year history of the AFBF Thanksgiving survey, other than the outlier of 2020,” the authors wrote. Target is offering a $20 Thanksgiving meal for four, including a small turkey, canned vegetables and stovetop stuffing mix. Walmart is promoting an “inflation-free Thanksgiving” meal of 29 items that can serve eight people for $56. “Don’t be afraid to check out multiple retailers.”Some Thanksgiving meal packages offer more ingredients, but that could mean preparing more dishes from scratch.
