Despite its hefty price, Corcoran says the coat gave her the one thing she "desperately" needed at the time: confidence. Even Bill Gates thought school was boring as a kid. While in middle school, Gates didn't find learning "interesting," he recently said on his "Unconfuse Me" podcast, in an episode featuring Khan Academy CEO Sal Khan. But the teacher spotted potential, and took the opportunity to encourage Gates to put some effort into his education. Gates went on to develop his mathematics and coding skills in high school, before dropping out of Harvard University to co-found Microsoft in 1975. "I do think the AI will be like a great high school teacher who really marks your essay, and you go back and think, 'OK, I need to step up there,'" Gates said.

"Just think: If I would've given him $250,000 on a [$10 million] valuation, it'd be billions," Cuban said. Specifically, given Uber's market capitalization of $90.1 billion as of Friday, Cuban's $250,000 would be worth $2.25 billion today. But, still," said Cuban, whose net worth is currently estimated at $5.1 billion. Cuban and Kalanick already had history at the time: Cuban invested $1.7 million in Kalanick's previous venture, a peer-to-peer networking startup called Red Swoosh, in 2005. However, Cuban said he didn't agree with Kalanick's $10 million valuation of the startup at the time: "I said, 'I'll do it at [a] $5 million valuation...' for Uber!"

Shekhinah Bass cut her teeth — and built her career — at one of the most competitive, powerful firms on Wall Street: Goldman Sachs. The most important soft skill that distinguishes high performers at Goldman Sachs, and propels people to successful careers on Wall Street at large, she's discovered, isn't creative dealmaking or a confident attitude — it's having a growth mindset. Coined by psychologist Carol Dweck, a growth mindset is when you see your abilities, talent and knowledge as skills you can continue to grow and improve upon. In the workplace, Bass says, you can measure your growth mindset based on how you respond to feedback from your manager and co-workers. "With a growth mindset, you will see those blind spots as things that are within your control to improve."

Having a good idea wasn't enough to win those colleagues over, she said — she needed to be likable. The lesson proved valuable when Hyman came up with the idea for Rent the Runway six years later in 2008, she said. The pair cold-emailed Diane von Furstenberg, and by luck, landed a meeting. As Hyman recounted, von Furstenberg worried that allowing her clothes to be rented for cheap would "cannibalize" her consumer base. In other words, they could help von Furstenberg grow her consumer base.

It doesn't have to take a ton of time, either, says Marissa Morrison, vice president of people at the job search site ZipRecruiter. Bill Gates has a vision for how artificial intelligence could transform education — by mimicking your favorite high school English teacher. "Very few students get feedback [from software programs] on an essay that this could be clearer, you really skipped this piece and the reasoning," Gates said. Gates stopped short of saying AI could — or should — ever replace human teachers. Rather, chatbots could assist overworked teachers and help "close the [education] gap" for low-income students around the world, he said. Khan Academy is also experimenting with using the tool to help facilitate student discussions, potentially providing "an army of teaching assistants for every teacher," Khan added.
