The Russian defence ministry published a video which it said showed marines from the 810th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade defeating Ukrainian forces. It said Ukrainian forces were suffering heavy casualties and losing equipment in unsuccessful attempts to land on islands in the Dnipro. It is still unclear how significant the Ukrainian attempt to gain a foothold on the eastern bank of the Dnipro is. A Ukrainian counter-offensive has failed to make any significant gains this year against Russian forces. According to unverified reports by pro-Russian bloggers, Russia has been harrying Ukrainian forces near the village Krynky, near marshes on the eastern bank upriver from Kherson, from which Russia withdrew its forces in autumn 2022.

The officials said Ukraine's troops had also achieved some success after crossing to the east bank of the Dnipro River in southern Kherson region. Russia has concentrated on Ukraine's eastern regions after failing to move on Kyiv in the early days after the February 2022 invasion. Volodymyr Fityo, a spokesperson for Ukrainian ground forces, said Russian troops focused attacks on Klishchiivka, a nearby village on heights retaken by Ukrainian forces in September. Russian accounts said Moscow's forces had beaten back more than 30 Ukrainian attacks in and around Bakhmut in the past week. Two drivers were killed when Russian forces shelled a private transport company parking lot in Kherson, regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin said.

Nov 19 (Reuters) - Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Sunday demanded rapid changes in the operations of Ukraine's military and announced the dismissal of the commander of the military's medical forces. "In today's meeting with Defence Minister Umerov, priorities were set," Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address. Zelenskiy said he had replaced Major-General Tetiana Ostashchenko as commander of the Armed Forces Medical Forces. "The task is clear, as has been repeatedly stressed in society, particularly among combat medics, we need a fundamentally new level of medical support for our soldiers," he said. Russian and Ukrainian foces have been battling on the banks of the Dnipro river. A Ukrainian official said Russian forces had been pushed back around 3 to 5 miles. AdvertisementUkraine said it had pushed Russian forces back three to eight kilometers, or around 3 to 5 miles, from the banks of the Dnipro river, which, if confirmed, would be a major breakthrough in Ukraine's lagging counteroffensive. Ukrainian and Russian forces have been positioned on opposite sides of the river in Kherson after Russia retreated from the region's western part last year. Ukrainian forces say they have have “gained a foothold” on the left (eastern) bank of the Dnipro River in southern Ukraine. In March, EU member states agreed to provide Ukraine with 1 million rounds of artillery ammunition for Ukraine to be delivered within 12 months. Both Ukraine and Russia need to replenish extraordinary amounts of ammunition as a grinding war of attrition continues in Ukraine’s east and south. Sergei Khadzhikurbanov, pictured in court in 2014, has received a presidential pardon after doing a stint fighting in Ukraine. The visit was previously unannounced and comes amid concerns that the Israel-Gaza conflict will divert international attention from the war in Ukraine.

He said the Russian military were mounting heavy resistance and had brought in reinforcements. The Ukrainian military said in its daily update that fighting was raging along the entire frontline from the south to the east, reporting 72 combat clashes in the last 24 hours. KHERSON, Ukraine—Ukrainian marines slip across the Dnipro River at night in small groups to reinforce a growing contingent of troops engaged in a daring operation to reinvigorate Kyiv’s military efforts in the occupied south. They have established three toeholds in and around villages on the eastern bank of the river in recent weeks, cutting off a road Russia uses to supply troops in the area, according to soldiers involved in the operation. The Ukrainians are hunkered down in basements and trenches and heavily outnumbered. Their hold is precarious.

MOSCOW, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Russia has conceded for the first time that some Ukrainian forces have crossed onto the River Dnipro's eastern bank, but has said they face "Hell fire" and that the average life expectancy of a Ukrainian soldier there is around two days. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's chief of staff said on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces had secured a foothold on the east bank of the Dnipro River in southern Ukraine's Kherson region, the first official acknowledgement of its kind. Andriy Yermak said Ukrainian forces had managed to cross the river and dig in "against all odds" and that his country's counteroffensive aimed at clawing back territory from Russia - which has so far failed to make a major breakthrough - was "developing." Vladimir Saldo, the Russian-installed governor of the part of Kherson region which Moscow controls, acknowledged in a statement that Ukrainian forces had managed to cross the river which was seen by Russia as a difficult barrier for Kyiv's soldiers to surmount. In the last two or three days alone, total enemy losses have totalled about a hundred fighters."

Ukraine's troops have been conducting operations on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River across from Kherson. AdvertisementUkrainian troops have crossed the Dnipro River, a natural barrier that has been working to Russia's advantage, and appear to be making a risky play to kick-start a struggling counteroffensive. Ukrainian troops hunker in hastily made trenches, facing stiff defenses and overwhelming numbers of Russian forces, recent reporting indicates. As the AP noted in a report Wednesday, Ukraine could possibly outflank Russia and relieve pressure on Ukrainian forces in Zaporizhzhia to achieve a breakthrough. One private in Ukraine's 38th Marine Brigade who'd been across the river since the start of November said Ukraine's forces were vastly outnumbered.

Moscow's forces have focused on eastern Ukraine since failing to advance on Kyiv in the first days of the February 2022 invasion. Zelenskiy, in his nightly video address, said Russian assaults in the eastern Donetsk region including Avdiivka had been "very intense". "Russia is already losing men and equipment near Avdiivka faster and on a larger scale than, for example, near Bakhmut," he said, referring to months of heavy fighting that culminated in Russian forces capturing the eastern town of Bakhmut in May. The more Russian forces that are destroyed near Avdiivka, the worse the overall situation will be for the enemy and the overall course of this war." Ukrainian forces, he said, had repelled 18 Russian attacks over the past 24 hours.

Ukraine reported Tuesday that its forces had established a foothold on the eastern bank of the river. The announcement could herald the start of an advance toward Russian-occupied Crimea, with Ukraine saying on Wednesday that it was starting to push back Russian forces. The Kherson area, in southern Ukraine, is partially occupied by Russian forces after an offensive to take the city of Kherson last year prompted Russian forces to withdraw to the eastern bank of the river. Russian forces are pummeling Ukrainian units that have have crossed over the Dnipro river to the Russian-occupied left (or eastern) bank of the river in Kherson, a Russian-installed official said Wednesday. The highly unusual incident suggested disarray in Russia's military establishment and state media over how to report the battlefield situation in southern Ukraine. It said that, after the regrouping, the Dnepr force would release some troops to be deployed in offensives on other fronts. RIA said the Russian military command had agreed with the Dnepr leadership's conclusions and ordered the relocation of troops to start. Another state agency, TASS, published just one alert on troops regrouping to more favourable positions, and then withdrew it, saying it had been released in error. Russian state media have privileged access to official briefings and typically report major military announcements shortly before they appear in the Telegram channel of the defence ministry.
