Although many Americans know much money they would need in their emergency fund to feel comfortable, reaching that goal is easier said than done. Nearly 90% of Americans agree with the traditional rule of thumb: Save enough money to cover at least three months of expenses, according to Bankrate's "2024 Annual Emergency Savings Report." And many feel like they would need about double that amount. A little over 60% of Americans say they'd need enough money saved to cover six months of expenses or more, per the report. Regardless, in reality, most respondents fall short, according to the report, and wouldn't be able to cover a $1,000 emergency expense using their savings.

Organizers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics plan to hold swimming in the home of the NFL’s Rams and Chargers — and softball and canoe slalom in Oklahoma. That’s according to an amended venue plan unveiled Friday by LA28, the 2028 Games’ organizing committee. It will be the largest swimming venue in Games history, per LA28, with 38,000 seats. LA28 organizers faced one complication with the SoFi swimming plan, however: The stadium is also set to be part of the Games’ opening ceremonies. The venue plan adjustments are in part due to new arenas that have become available for use and a previously assigned venue that became unavailable, LA28 said.

North Devon has been held by the Conservative Party since the 2015 general election. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak could become the country's first sitting prime minister to lose their seat at a general election, according to the findings of a shock new poll. If correct, the upcoming vote would deliver Labour a supermajority of 382, comfortably more than former Prime Minister Tony Blair's historic 1997 victory. The analysis showed that left-leaning Scottish National Party is set to win 8 seats, while Wales' pro-independence political party Plaid Cymru is expected to win 4.

Millennials are losing their cool

Millennials may not be there yet on pants, or at least that's what I, as a millennial, tell myself. The internet is fueling the millennials vs. Gen Z discourse, but underlying it is something deeper: millennials raging against the dying of the light. "It's really beneficial for brands that at least the online discourse has millennials looking to Gen Z for trends. The nature of internet culture, much of which was created by millennials, puts a unique bent on the discourse and how creators and influencers address millennials. Gen Z, be nice to your friendly millennial next door, and vice versa.

Using credit cards responsibly can earn you a number of perks, from store discounts to airline miles. And although some people may spend hours strategizing ways to rack up rewards points they can swap for those perks, self-made millionaire Ramit Sethi says he chooses not to "play the credit card points game." "The point of my life is not to squeeze out the absolute maximum amount of credit card rewards. Sethi says he mainly uses two credit cards for his personal expenses: a card that offers travel rewards and a card that offers cash back. After taking a look at his own spending, he figured out that those cards were enough for him since he didn't want to overcomplicate his finances by needing to keep track of multiple credit cards.

For almost two years Tania Drobot, a 53-year-old math teacher from Kyiv, Ukraine, has lived in the home of Fiona and David Ion, in Moorhaven, Devon, on the southwest coast of England. They have questions about each other’s cooking. Tania likes steamed meatballs, considers a plate of hot vegetables a salad and uses a lot of sumac; Fiona and David disagree on all counts. She likes faux leather; they like comfortable rainwear. And they navigate daily life without really sharing a common language, occasionally gesturing to be understood.

What slumping oil prices mean for our stake in Coterra Energy
  + stars: | 2024-06-04 | by ( Zev Fima | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +6 min
U.S. crude prices fell for the fifth straight day Tuesday, but we remain committed to our lone oil-and-gas stock in Coterra Energy . Elevated oil prices have, as a result, pressured discretionary spending and corporate margins. If we get that, then we should see lower oil prices and sustained buying power along with a healthy environment for business investments. And yet we still see reason to stick with Coterra Energy. Indeed, analysts at Citigroup published a research note Tuesday exploring potential takeover targets for Devon Energy, another ex-Club oil stock.

What to do if you're the 'money person' in your relationshipIf you're the "money person" in your relationship, you might want to make a change, Sethi says. "The person who's the 'money person' has to take on the responsibility of gently recalibrating the relationship." As meme stocks like GameStop temporarily surged this month, it appears meme coins are having a moment as well. But before you consider investing in cryptocurrency, it's important to understand the difference between meme coins, altcoins and bitcoin. And although every meme coin is an altcoin, every altcoin isn't necessarily a meme coin. "Meme coins are among the riskiest of cryptocurrencies because they seem to emerge from nowhere and information about them can be sparse," he says.

How to begin investingA simple way to get started is by purchasing low-cost index funds, Sethi says. Index funds track market indexes like the S&P 500, which follows the stock performance of around 500 large U.S. publicly traded companies, such as Microsoft, Apple and Nvidia. To get started, you'll need to open a brokerage account, traditional IRA, Roth IRA or other investment account. But don't let your funds simply sit in your brokerage account. You'll need to go one step further and decide which funds you'd like to invest in.

New York CNN —Congressional Democrats are investigating whether leading US oil companies have illegally colluded with one another and with OPEC to inflate prices at the pump, CNN has learned. The Federal Trade Commission earlier this month accused Sheffield, the founder of Pioneer Natural Resources, of conspiring with OPEC and its allies to boost prices. Pallone argued that public data suggests US oil producers did not ramp up drilling during the period that Sheffield was trying to influence his rivals. Pallone sent Exxon additional document demands, including communications between Pioneer employees who were involved in developing production plans and representatives of OPEC and OPEC+. Sheffield was among the oil CEOs who testified before Pallone’s committee during an April 2022 hearing on Big Oil and gas prices.

Most Americans don't think they need to be millionaires in order to achieve financial success. Fewer than 20% of Americans define being "financially successful" as "being a millionaire," according to Bankrate's 2024 Financial Success survey. Nearly 60% of Americans say they would feel financially successful if they were able to "live comfortably," according to the survey. "Salary is often not the best barometer for financial success," Foster says. Between 2020 and 2021, he became one of the key internet personas who encouraged an army of day traders to heavily invest in GameStop, kicking off the "meme stock" frenzy. And in 2024, it appears that meme stocks are rallying again. Short sellers are individual investors or hedge funds who believe a certain stock's price will decline. If the stock price doesn't fall the way the short sellers anticipated, they can lose money, as happened with GameStop. Investors should also be wary of chasing meme stocks with the expectation of earning a profit.

CNN —Florida A&M University is putting a purported $237.75 million donation “on pause,” after media reports and college board leaders raised concerns about the actual value of the stock gift—and the details surrounding the donor’s previous donations. South Carolina’s Coastal Carolina University had announced a $95 million donation from an anonymous donor, who then backed out months later. At an emergency board meeting on Thursday, FAMU board of trustee and foundation members expressed their concerns and frustration about the school’s vetting process involving Gerami’s donation. He referred questions to the university and agreed to answer CNN’s questions on the following day, but he couldn’t be reached. FAMU’s Special Board of Trustees, which oversees the full school and the foundation, has scheduled a meeting for May 15 to discuss the donation.
