In 2017, Hurricane Maria damaged three IV fluid manufacturing plants in Puerto Rico, also operated by Baxter, which led to a shortage. “Although this particular shortage on these particular IV fluids is not something we’ve encountered,” DeRienzo said. Along with IV fluids, the North Carolina Baxter facility also made specialty fluids, such as peritoneal dialysis fluid as well as irrigation fluids, used to clean wounds. Ganio said those measures won’t solve the ongoing IV fluid shortage problems long term. “The IV fluids are kind of a good example of the chronic shortages,” he said.

LONDON — U.S. pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly is exploring whether obesity drugs could be used to curb joblessness after signing a major investment deal with the U.K. The weight-loss treatment firm and creator of Zepbound announced Monday that it would commit £279 million ($364 million) to help tackle Britain’s significant health challenges — including obesity. Within that, the five-year trial, conducted in collaboration with Health Innovation Manchester, will also explore how weight-loss drugs impact “participants’ employment status and sick days from work,” the company said in a news release. The use cases for obesity drugs have been growing over recent months, with several drug regulators expanding GLP-1 drug labels for use in treating obesity-related comorbidities and other illnesses. The company said it anticipates making an additional £279 million of new investment into the U.K. over the coming years.

Vice President Kamala Harris proposed an initiative to expand healthcare in rural communities. It includes recruiting 10,000 more healthcare workers to rural areas and expanding their student-debt relief options. Trump held the lead over rural voters in 2020, gearing up for a fight this election cycle. According to her campaign, Harris plans to recruit 10,000 healthcare professionals to work in rural and tribal areas. Her case is far from unique, however: Hospitals across the United States have said they’re taking steps to conserve their supply of IV fluids, including postponing or canceling nonemergency surgeries. IV fluids do more than deliver drugs or electrolytes directly into a patient’s bloodstream. On Monday, the AHA urged President Joe Biden to declare a nationwide emergency over the limited supply of IV fluids. He also said the medical center has “doubled down” on efforts to prevent wasting IV fluid, as it’s the area’s only level 1 trauma hospital. A number of IV products, including sodium chloride, dextrose and sterile water, have already been in short supply. The Florida Department of Health, however, cited local statutes in the cease-and-desist letters sent last week to WCJB in Gainesville and WFLA in Tampa. The threat from the health department underscores the intensity of the political battle over Amendment 4, a ballot measure that would enshrine abortion rights in Florida’s constitution. The cease-and-desist letters from John Wilson, general counsel for the state health department, appear to be part of that campaign. No Marburg cases have been detected in the U.S. As of Sunday, Rwandan health officials had reported 49 cases, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. CNN —Amid an outbreak of Marburg virus in Rwanda, travelers coming into the United States who have been in Rwanda in the previous 21 days will be screened starting next week, the US Department of Health and Human Services announced Monday. There are no confirmed cases of Marburg virus disease – a rare but deadly hemorrhagic disease similar to Ebola – outside Rwanda, and officials have said that the current risk to the US is low. The CDC is also issuing a Level 3 Travel Health Notice, recommending that people reconsider nonessential travel to Rwanda, and sending automated texts to air travelers arriving from Rwanda to share information and instructions. As of Monday, there have been 56 confirmed cases of Marburg in Rwanda, with 36 people in isolation and treatment, and 12 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health. The CDC and the World Health Organization have deployed teams of experts to Rwanda to provide guidance and assistance to public health workers there.

The Summary Flooding in North Carolina following Hurricane Helene has led to swarms of yellow jackets. Severe flooding in western North Carolina as a result of Hurricane Helene has stirred up colonies of yellow jackets, raising the risk of stings. North Carolina health officials said they have bought large amounts of Benadryl and EpiPens to address the problem. Tarren Pruitt, 42, a registered nurse in West Jefferson, North Carolina, said that since the hurricane, she, too, has noticed yellow jackets wherever she goes. Yellow jackets are generally more aggressive than bees, and they are able to sting people multiple times.

The Social Security Administration in an email explained that there are strict rules about who can legally receive benefits and Social Security numbers. The move, experts say, isn’t based on medical science but instead on ongoing efforts from anti-abortion advocates to restrict access to abortion medications in states with near-total bans, like Louisiana. During a medication abortion, mifepristone is given first, followed by misoprostol one to two days later. According to the new law, it’s not a crime for a patient to possess the medications if they were prescribed to them. Hospitals don’t need to remove misoprostol from hemorrhage carts, the spokesperson added, or hesitate to administer misoprostol to patients experiencing health emergencies. The testimony “illustrated that easy access to these drugs can be dangerous to pregnant women,” Murrill said in the statement.

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign told NBC News on Wednesday that if the former president were re-elected, his administration would support “universal access” to in-vitro fertilization, potentially opening up the door for same-sex couples to receive coverage for the expensive fertility treatment. President Trump also supports universal access to contraception and IVF,” campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. Many of Trump’s campaign promises regarding LGBTQ issues center on transgender people. Only seven states — including Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey and New York — require IVF benefits to include same-sex couples, according to a report from nonprofit news website Stateline. Two of Walz’s false claims are related to Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation think tank’s detailed right-wing blueprint for the next Republican administration. Project 2025 has been the subject of multiple false or misleading claims from Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign this summer. Project 2025 does not propose to make people register with any federal agency when they get pregnant. Project 2025 is firmly anti-abortion; it proposes, among other things, to criminalize the mailing of abortion medication and devices.
