On the campaign trail, Mazi Pilip wears a Star of David around her neck. And when it comes to the Israel-Hamas war, Ms. Pilip, the Republican nominee in a special House election in New York, adds no political polish. 7 changed me forever,” she said the other day, her voice cracking, at a vigil for a local man who was taken hostage by Hamas. Ms. Pilip, an Israeli military veteran, called him “my brother.”“The vicious attack of Hamas on my people, on my brothers and sisters, and our Jewish land — a vicious attack — we are never going to forget,” she said, as the packed gymnasium of the suburban Jewish community center nodded along. Many politicians have rushed to stand by American Jews since the war began.

FORT LAWN, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina state Sen. Mike Fanning likes to talk to people. Politically, South Carolina varies from its neighbors. No explanation is offered for the inertia, which leaves South Carolina and Wyoming as the only states in the nation without such a law. South Carolina Republicans, meanwhile, have taken advantage of the changing national priorities of both parties. They took over the South Carolina Senate in 2000 by getting a Democrat to switch parties.

National issues have dominated a special House election to replace George Santos in New York, as Republicans and Democrats take voters’ temperatures on issues that could tip November’s general election. The race pits Tom Suozzi, a former Democratic congressman who represented the Queens and Long Island swing district for three terms, against Mazi Pilip, an Ethiopian-born local legislator. The open seat was created after the House voted to expel Mr. Santos, a Republican facing federal criminal charges. The Feb. 13 contest carries unusual weight: A Democratic victory would narrow Republicans’ barely governable House majority to just two votes. A well-known veteran vs. a party machineAfter decades in office, Mr. Suozzi is one of the most recognizable and well-liked figures on Long Island, but his party is deeply unpopular.

Last week, a group of federal employees organized a protest of the Biden administration’s support of Israel in its war with Hamas. Although a snowstorm in Washington complicated their plans, some federal employees from a range of agencies declined to work for a day. Federal employees have every right to participate in protests in their personal capacities. And they have every right to resign their positions to express strong disagreement with the policies of the administration they serve — as a number of Biden administration officials have done over the Israel-Hamas war. This latest group of federal workers, however, organized a protest in their capacities as government officials yet did so anonymously to avoid being held responsible.

Here are the key election night takeaways on a strong night for Democrats:As Ohio goes, so goes the nation? Tuesday night’s election results probably won’t change the equation for Biden in 2024, given Ohio’s recent presidential electoral history. Other state Republican parties might not be so lucky. Andy Beshear won a second term on Tuesday in a state that Trump carried by more than 25 points in 2020. Bowman, Lee, Omar and Tlaib also were among the 17 sponsors of Bush’s resolution asking the Biden administration to call for a ceasefire. Challenges to Bush and the others were possible even before the Hamas attack on Oct. 7 or Israel’s subsequent attack on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. It is unfortunate, Andrabi said, that the House Democratic leadership has not taken a stronger stance against AIPAC’s efforts to knock off rank-and-file Democrats. It remains unclear whether House Democrats will help incumbents fend off primary challengers through campaign fundraising arms.
