A surveillance video shared by the interior ministry on Thursday shows the suspects attempting to bring the captagon tablets through Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port. UAE authorities have seized hundreds of thousands of captagon pills since 2019. Captagon was originally the brand name for a medicinal product containing the synthetic stimulant fenethylline. Experts say the vast majority of global captagon production occurs in Syria, with the Gulf region being its primary destination. Last year, the US introduced the 2022 US Captagon Act, which linked the trade to the Syrian regime and called it a “transnational security threat.”

The world was different; we were different. Staring into your closet was like staring into a foreign land. Then there were predictions that the Roaring ’20s would return in all their glittering, befeathered glamour. Then everyone threw up their hands and said, “It’s a mess!”So was fashion, and that’s pretty much where things stood. But as the New York shows drew to a close this week, a different answer emerged: a hybrid look for a hybrid world.

Build a Better ClosetDon’t overlook the storage space you already have. To make the most of a closet, Ms. Spanos suggested taking stock of everything you need to store and then outfitting the interior with a system that gives everything its place. Ms. Spanos often uses Elfa products from the Container Store, which are adjustable, so the components can be repositioned as needed. In a compact bedroom in a Houston apartment, Ms. Spanos combined two inadequate closets to create a single storage space running across the wall, concealing it with sliding antique Chinese screens that double as a decorative feature. “Then we used an Elfa system inside that closet to really maximize the space,” she said.

But in the late 1960s, the architect Edward Vason Jones began to bedazzle the State Department’s eighth floor with cornices, columns, coffers and gilding. And as before, every art piece, every gold flake, every carpet thread was donated or paid for by private funders. An opulent new book called “America’s Collection: The Art & Architecture of the Diplomatic Reception Rooms at the U.S. Department of State” (Rizzoli/Electa) tells this story in pictures of frumpy interiors turned into glittering set pieces. The rooms, which have been closed for renovations and updating, preserving their antique character, as the State Department building itself is re-roofed, will reopen Sept. 26. Members of the public can book visits at iipstate.my.site.com and can explore the rooms online in a self-guided virtual tour.

A fatal plane crash was reported in Mexico after a gender reveal stunt went wrong. Previous gender reveal parties have also caused deaths and accidents like a massive wildfire. The most recent crash isn't the first deadly accident involving a gender reveal party. The gender reveal trend also caused a massive wildfire in California in 2020 after a celebratory fireworks display sparked a catastrophic blaze that raged for days across more than 10,000 acres. The incidents prompted the woman who popularized the trend to call for an end to the increasingly extreme gender reveal trend in 2020.

The City of Angels remains a city of teardowns. One house that slipped through the cracks is a 1927 Spanish Colonial-slash-Craftsman in the Fairfax neighborhood, just south of West Hollywood. In the fall of 2020, Siena Deck, currently a production assistant at HBO, won an eight-way bidding war to claim the heartbreaker, paying $1.29 million. Outside, jacaranda trees turn the grounds purple in spring. But what really impressed Ms. Deck, 25, were the decorative and frequently imperfect marks left by the former occupants, who lived there for 17 years.

A Brief History of Bling
  + stars: | 2023-08-08 | by ( Daniel Levin Becker | Jessica Pettway | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
You can’t hear hip-hop jewelry, technically speaking, but that doesn’t mean you don’t know what it sounds like. The word bling, which entered common parlance at the turn of the century, conjures specific sights: small flotillas of twinkling diamonds, gold layered literally to the teeth, watches so gem-encrusted they barely tick. But it also suggests an expansive range of sounds, from the chimes in B.G.’s 1999 anthem “Bling Bling” to the reverberant pomp of Slick Rick, the otherworldly bounce of Missy Elliott, the diced-pineapple opulence of Rick Ross. One beguiling trick of hip-hop production, whether it’s expensive or ersatz, elegant or gaudy, is to convey musically what jewelry signifies visually. Rappers wear jewelry to floss and flex, to make a flamboyant spectacle of their disposable income, but also to commemorate and honor, to endorse and advertise.

Damage to an Orthodox cathedral in Odesa, Ukraine, which was filmed for a news report after Russia attacked the city, was not staged, contrary to viral social media posts claiming otherwise. The Spaso-Preobrazhenskyi Cathedral, or Transfiguration Cathedral, was damaged during a Russian missile strike on July 23, 2023. The social media users all point to two women seen in the video carrying stacks of rubble. They suggest the women are carrying “heavy stones” too effortlessly for the stacks to be real. The clip shows locals carrying blocks of lightweight polystyrene during cleanup work, not staged scenes with props.

But plans to introduce bilingual road signs featuring both the English and te reo Maori languages have sparked a divisive, racially charged debate ahead of the country’s looming general election. Slightly less than a quarter of New Zealand’s 892,200 Maori speak te reo Maori as one of their first languages, according to the latest government data. Part of the reason that te reo Maori is not so widely spoken is that back in New Zealand’s colonial era there were active efforts to stamp it out. The Native Schools Act 1867 required schools to teach in English where possible and children were often physically punished for speaking te reo Maori. “The primary objective of these standards is to guarantee that all road signs are unambiguous, uniform, and legible to all,” he said.

But something went wrong in Putin’s approach, and it wasn’t just the incompetence of his military, the bravery of Ukrainians or the intercession by the West. In a nutshell, the problem is this: A monopoly on truth can be sustained only through a monopoly on violence. Big Brother can tell the Big Lie only if he has the Big — and only — Gun. But it creates risks, including the risk that someone from one of those centers of power will be willing to tell an inconvenient truth. And it may be why he appeared to have been treated as a hero, almost a liberator, in Rostov-on-Don.

Luisa Roldan's 1692 sculpture “Saint Michael the Archangel Defeating the Devil (El Arcángel San Miguel venciendo al demonio)" will be on display for the first time at the Royal Collections Gallery in Madrid, Spain. The exhibit starts with the Hapsburg monarchs’ royal collections — located near the old city wall exhibit — and then one level below, the Bourbon dynasty collections. On a floor below that are the temporary exhibitions, which start with carriages from the Royal Collections and some on loan from other institutions, Ruiz said. A third of the museum’s 650 items will be rotated annually back to the royal palaces and other Patrimonio sites and replaced with other items from their collections.
