The New Hampshire primary comes eight days after Iowa's Republican caucuses, which former President Donald Trump dominated. The New Hampshire primary will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 23, with the precise hours dependent on the voting location. That means the New Hampshire primary will serve purely as a barometer of support for the Democrats in the race. But New Hampshire state law requires it to host the first primary, and the Republican-controlled state government declined to make any legislative change to its primary date. Democratic President Joe Biden is running for reelection but will not be on the ballot because of the primary date dispute.

With a cash haul from elite party donors expected to reach into the millions, the Los Angeles event could help ease concerns among Democrats about Biden's reelection chances. As of the last fundraising reporting deadline at the end of September, Biden and his party reported $91 million cash on hand. During the 2020 Democratic primary campaign, Smith and Costos hosted Biden's first major fundraiser in the area, during a Los Angeles swing that raised over $1 million. At the time, Katzenberg was involved in planning events for another Democratic candidate, Pete Buttigieg, who is now Biden's transportation secretary. Katzenberg's former business partners at DreamWorks, Geffen and Spielberg, will be at the Smith and Costos event.

Why a Major Primary Challenge to Biden Is So Unlikely
  + stars: | 2023-11-30 | by ( Maggie Astor | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The Democratic anxiety that has swirled around President Biden for over a year has kicked into overdrive in recent weeks, as his approval ratings have stayed stubbornly low and polls have shown the possibility of his losing to former President Donald J. Trump. That anxiety has crystallized into one question, repeated like a drumbeat: Can’t some big-name Democrat challenge him? There are several reasons for that, most of which boil down to it being really hard to run a successful primary campaign against a sitting president. And doing so at this point, just two months before voting starts, wouldn’t be feasible anyhow. Making things still more difficult for a would-be challenger is that Mr. Biden remains relatively popular among Democratic voters.

For an incumbent president, primary races -- the state-by-state competitions that nominate a political party's official presidential candidate -- are normally a perfunctory affair. Pro-Biden Democrats' volunteer-focused effort, with just a $100,000 budget, will encourage primary voters to put Biden's name on the New Hampshire ballot. Lyndon B. Johnson, then the Democratic incumbent, shunned the New Hampshire primary in 1968 due to over-confidence, only to see an insurgent campaign from Minnesota, U.S. Biden write-in organizers have largely settled on asking voters to write in "Joe Biden," but believe that other names like "President Biden" and "President Biden and Vice President Harris" satisfy a state law that says to count the vote if the reasonable intent of the voter is clear. "They're gonna use this as a way to say, look, we are good Democrats and organized this to protect President Biden," Smith said.

Despite weak poll numbers and questions, including from some Democrats, about his age, Biden has stuck to his plan to seek a second term after clearing the field of serious Democratic primary challengers when he announced in April that he was running again. Biden loyalists, citing his record in office, argue that the party does not need a backup plan to defeat probable Republican nominee Donald Trump, who Biden beat in the 2020 election. To the chagrin of the White House, Biden's age has become a defining part of the 2024 campaign. "If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. An incumbent hasn't lost his party's presidential nomination since Democrats passed over Franklin Pierce in 1856. Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860 marked the last time someone from a new party — in his case, the Republican Party — won the White House. But with the United States deeply divided and somewhat anxious about the prospect of another Biden-Trump campaign, third party candidates insist voters are restless enough to defy history. West announced last month that he no longer was running under the Green Party banner, but as an independent. Democrats assume that many of voters supporting a progressive environmental activist would likely have chosen Clinton if forced to choose between the major parties.

Long-shot Biden challenger Phillips won't run again for House

REUTERS/Reba Saldanha/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 24 (Reuters) - U.S. Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota, a long-shot challenger to President Joe Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination, on Friday said he would not run for reelection. The 54-year-old millionaire businessman and three-term congressman last month said he would run against Biden, seizing on the president's lackluster approval ratings and voter wariness over his age. The post linked to an interview in the Minnesota Star Tribune paper, in which he explained his move. Phillips, who first won his seat in 2018 and won reelection in 2020 and 2022, said it would be "unproductive and uncomfortable" to run again, given his nomination bid. Phillips is unlikely to affect Biden's chance of securing the party's nomination, given the incumbent's deep resources, official party support and reshaping of the party's nominating contest calendar to help fend off any early challengers.

Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., speaks during the news conference on the Invest to Protect Act outside the Capitol on Thursday, May 12, 2022. Rep. Dean Phillips, the Minnesota Democrat challenging President Joe Biden for their party's presidential nomination, announced Friday that he will not seek reelection to Congress in 2024. Biden, who announced his own reelection campaign months earlier, has rarely commented on Phillips' challenge. Phillips has said he is running for president to strengthen the Democratic ticket in light of polls showing low approval for Biden and his administration. Some recent surveys have found former President Donald Trump, the clear frontrunner in the 2024 Republican primary, beating Biden in several key primary states.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips, who is running for president and challenging Joe Biden in the primary, announced Friday he will not seek reelection to Congress in 2024. Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota, a Democrat who began a long-shot primary challenge to President Biden last month, said on Friday that he would not run for re-election next year. Mr. Phillips, 54, a moderate third-term congressman who represents a district that includes suburban Minneapolis, renewed his call for generational change in Washington as he announced the move. “After three terms it is time to pass the torch,” he said in a statement, describing a country “facing a crisis of cooperation, common sense and truth.”In challenging Mr. Biden for the Democratic nomination, Mr. Phillips has cited the president’s age, 81, and his low approval ratings, warning that Mr. Biden risks losing his re-election bid to former President Donald J. Trump, 77, the Republican front-runner. Recent polls, including a New York Times/Siena College survey, have shown Mr. Biden trailing Mr. Trump in key battleground states.

A Left Turn for Democrats in New Hampshire?

Since their narrow victories in 2016, Democrats have won every federal race in New Hampshire – and have done so by widening margins. But Sununu, the scion of a New Hampshire Republican dynasty, decided not to run for a new term in 2024. Depending on vacancies and special elections, the Democrats might be able to flip control of the chamber even before the 2024 election. Under Biden, Democrats changed the order of their primaries to place New Hampshire tied for second, rather than first. Regardless, the unusual nature of the 2024 primary could have negative consequences for Democrats, Galdieri said.

U.S. Representative Dean Phillips (D., Minn.) greets supporters outside the statehouse in Concord, New Hampshire last month after filing the paperwork to put his name on the state’s presidential primary ballot. Photo: reba saldanha/ReutersPresident Joe Biden and his allies have been treating presidential nomination challenger Rep. Dean Phillips (D., Minn.) like a nobody—or worse. Now Mr. Phillips is looking less like a man trying to make a polite point and more like a guy who wants to win this thing. While the Democratic Party’s prominent governors and senators have still not chosen to challenge Mr. Biden, the White House may already understand that the relatively obscure man from the Land of 10,000 Lakes could be a formidable opponent. Mr. Phillips at first tried running a nice respectful campaign claiming that Mr. Biden has been a successful president but is just not the right candidate for 2024.

The filing marks a return to a state that Biden credits with catapulting him to the White House. Biden ousted Iowa and New Hampshire from the top spots on the party's nominating calendar in favor of South Carolina. The move forces any Democratic challenger to Biden to compete first in South Carolina instead of Iowa and New Hampshire, two largely white states which both rejected him in 2020. Biden did not register for New Hampshire's primary, slated for January, after the state refused the Democratic Party's request to move the date back. A CNN poll published on Oct. 31 found that Biden's overall approval rating in South Carolina was just 33%, lower than his national approval, which has hovered around 40% in most polls.

Nov 10 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden's re-election campaign on Friday will register for the South Carolina Democratic primary, the party's first official clash and an early enthusiasm test for a president dogged by a rash of recent polls that show declining support among Black voters. Harris was joined in the state capital by South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn, one of the leading Black voices in Congress. Since announcing his reelection bid in April, Biden has made far more frequent official visits to Pennsylvania — a key battleground in the general election — than states that will decide Democrats' 2024 primary. “It was South Carolina that created the path to the White House for Joe Biden and me,” Harris said. Harris spoke in a crowded room at state party headquarters, flanked by cheering supporters holding Biden-Harris and South Carolina Democratic Party signs. Minnesota Rep. CNN —One year out from Election Day 2024, former President Donald Trump narrowly leads President Joe Biden, 49% to 45% among registered voters, in a hypothetical rematch in the latest CNN poll conducted by SSRS. And among voters of color generally, women divide 63% Biden to 31% Trump, while men split about evenly, 49% Trump to 46% Biden. Only about half of Democrats (51%) say Biden has the sharpness and stamina to serve, compared with 90% of Republicans who say Trump does.
